songs we like: SJD - beautiful haze

SJD - beautiful haze
[really lovely song by this electronic folky new zealand band. weirdly enough, the internet isn't sprinkled with free gems or info on this group. shame, cause they deserve proper exposure. big up to if:mv for the intro]

beyonce - got me bodied (world premiere) [and then some]

beyonce - got me bodied (extended version)
[major thanks to kevipod who must have heard my request yesterday, THIS is the video that i've been waiting for! beyonce recruits her destinys child posse (and her sis solonge) as they go through at least a dozen new dance moves that'll be perfect for me to clear the dance floor. a total ode to bob fosse's sweet charity, is it just me or should go go bars make a comeback?]

UPDATE (guess who just put up more b vids!):

beyonce - suga mama

beyonce - green light

on the radar: rufus wainwright

i just received the official press release for the upcoming rufus wainwright album release the stars and though my bud xolondon has passed on loads of info already, i thought i'd add a few new tidbits to the mix.

- Rufus was originally going to write a simple, bare boned album, but when he got to berlin, the city inspired him to create a grand (hopefully OTT) "huge gilded album".

- though executive producer neil tennant, sis martha, joan wasser (aka joan as policewoman) and actress sian phillips all feature on the album, rufus also ropes in teddy thompson, sharon jones (brilliant vocalist of the dap kings) and some new names to me, jenni mulduar and lucy roche (yes a daughter of THAT roche!).

- much of the album was written while his mother was undergoing a major surgery, hence an emotional urgency that threads through the every song.

- after last years successful judy garland concert at carnegie hall (which i absolutely loved!), rufus is planning on recreating judy's performance at the hollywood bowl in LA on September 23, 2007 (buy tix here)

- rufus will launch his album tour in coachella and then travel through various stops in europe, (including two performances at the old vic in london - i just bought tix and you can too!!!) before coming back to the states.

until the album comes out, here are two tracks from the animated film meet the robinsons for you to enjoy:

rufus wainwright - the motion waltz (emotional commotion)

rufus wainwright - another believer

maroon 5 - makes me wonder (world premiere)

maroon 5 - makes me wonder
[totally tipped from kevipod, here is the 1st video taken off their upcoming album it won't be soon before long]

it's beyonce day: 2 more vids from b'day

with the upcoming b'day deluxe edition primed for release next week (up to 7 new tracks added on to the collection), beyonce went one up and commissioned a video for each track on the album. though some of these just look like extended photo shoots (and borderline drag), the fact that it was done in the first place is a feat to admire.

we've already seen upgrade u last month now ali's blog leaks two more for us to admire. personally i can't wait to see got me bodied with the reunion of the girls doing dance moves together.

beyonce - kitty kat

beyonce - freakum dress

gift of song: siobhan donaghy, beyonce, natasha bedingfield, timbaland feat m.i.a.

with a slew of new stuff spewing out on the interweb, i thought i'd be a tad nice and pass on some gems for you to savor (plus, i'm on jury duty, so i can't do anything during the day). enjoy!

siobhan donaghy - there's a place
[with the album ghosts recently leaked out, i have to say there are so many beautiful gems on siobhan's debut that it's turning my head in. i've chosen a gorgeous lullabye that happily proves that siobhan has left her sugababes roots far far behind. definitely a contender for the best album of the month!]

beyonce - still in love (kissing you)
[for those of us ballad freaks, you will easily recognize this cover version of the classic des'ree song that she penned for the decade old romeo & juliet soundtrack. taken from the packed b-day re-issue, b does a nice job of not over doing the vocals as she is prone to do alot these days. lovely.]

natasha bedingfield - soulmate
[natasha's debut album unwritten was a surprise not only in it's dearth of singles but with vocals that were even more impressive live. her upcoming album n.b. looks to continue the tradition (though from the 5 track sampler, i have yet to hear something as catchy as "unwritten")]

timbaland feat m.i.a. - come around
[featured on the uk version of his upcoming album shock value, this collaboration could have been explosive, but has turned out a bit boring if you ask me.]

gift of song: amy winehouse

amy winehouse - will you still love me tomorrow (taken from the UK release of 'Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason OST')
[call me obsessed, but just found out she sang this cover version a few years back. gorgeous.]

by the way, just cause i'm nice, here is the now classic grace kelly mp3 just for you (and it's legit yo!).

sessions with wongie: maroon 5

my thoughts on maroon 5 are pretty positive in general. lead singer adam levine is a cutie with a smooth soulful voice. their last album songs about jane was a surprisingly confident collection of pop songs that channeled the best of 80's bands like hall & oats and steely dan. and what i like the most about these guys is that their strong work ethic of touring for 3 years non-stop gave them well deserved respect and success.

so there i was flying in to LA for an interview with the boys (just adam and jesse - who i've never noticed to be cute, but now i think i have a new band crush on him) and i have to be honest, even if i wasn't going crazy to listen to the new album 'it won't be soon before long', i definitely was curious to see what they could come up with after all this time.

though there are some questionable lyrics (simple is more like it) and no real thread between the title of the album and the songs themselves, i have to say, with more than 1/2 the album full of potential radio hits, the boys need not worry about their next few years.

Track listing is as follows:

1. If I Never See Your Face Again (typical opening song, catchy and what you'd expect from the boys)
2. Makes Me Wonder (1st single and well... not that mind blowing as you'd want it to be)
3. Little Of Your Time
4. Wake Up Call (the 2nd single but i'm totally not into this silly song about murder and cheating and yawn...)
5. Won't Go Home Without You (the album starts to get interesting at this mark.)
6. Nothing Lasts Forever (the vocal sample used in the kanye west 'heard em say' gets a full song. it's pretty beautiful really.)
7. Can't Stop
8. Goodnight, Goodnight
9. Not Falling Apart (this should be THE single.)
10. Kiwi
11. Better That We Break (lovely! this is the ballad that showcases adam and his writing talents the best.)
12. Back At Your Door (yet another lovely adult ballad. maybe the boys should drop their rock star dreams and embrace their proper songwriting talents instead.)

if you're a fan of the 1st single, the video for 'makes me wonder' will world premiere on TRL march 29th (i'll find you a youtube version, don't you worry)

new video monday: the decemberists, lcd soundsystem, ash, fall out boy, kelly rowland feat eve

the decemberists - o valencia
[one of my fave tunes from last year finally gets a video release. enjoy!]

lcd soundsystem - north american scum
[i'm a bit late on getting onto this single. but now that i have, what a fun fun tune!]

ash - you can't have it all
[taken off their upcoming greatest hits collection. the good news is that the band have been pretty busy and will release a proper full length album coming out in june!
speaking of which download a free mp3 from their myspace page
ash - i started a fire
[click on the link, signup and get the free mp3]]

fall out boy - thnks fr th mmrs
[whr hv ll th vwls gn? ths s nnyng dnt y thnk?]

kelly rowland feat eve - like this
[this is an 'eh' 1st single to relaunch kelly rowland, wished it was better. not the best video either.]

hot new music: snow patrol - signal fire

snow patrol - signal fire
[you know when things are big for you when you're being asked to write the theme song to a summer blockbuster like spider man 3. such is the case for our young scots snow patrol. weirdly enough, they don't bother me as much as coldplay did when they got to this level. thanks to ali's blog for the tip]

sessions with wongie: timbaland

i was actually looking forward to checking out timbaland's new album shock value (he is the biggest producer in hip hop/r&b today). so when i got the invite to go to his listening session with tim himself personally introducing the album, who am i to say no?

held at the 'exclusive' bar PM, i was pretty skeptical about the venue since it's pretty much known as one of those bottle serviced joints for corporate types and wannabe models. luckily the crowd this evening was more FOT (friends of timbaland) which included loads of record label folk, a few fashionistas, some journalists (um... i guess i'm one of those) and justin timberlake (he being the pink elephant in the room - we knew he was there, but we were too cool to actually stare at how regular he looks in person).

after waiting about 2 hours for timbaland to show up, the crowd (and camera crew) started to circle around a hooded figure slowly walking his way over to the DJ booth above the club. once he got there, timbaland spent another few minutes saying 'mic check' then started his intro by thanking a few people and saying we were all going to experience a great party. the crowd was ready, the drinks were free flowing and i, the music nerd, couldn't wait for a loud boogie down.

to say i was disappointed is a bit of an understatement. the music barely blasted out of the speakers and after 30 seconds of the crowd realizing that the sound system was shite, everyone went back to chatting and acting as if timbaland hadn't started the listening session yet (i went to a killers listening party last year and the music was so encompassing that i not only ended up loving the album, but i left singing a few tunes too.)

you could see that shit was hitting the fan because one of the big wigs was walking around the room looking pretty pissed off. to make matters worse, timbaland didn't say anything after his intro. he just stood there looking miffed that the room wasn't reacting in ANY way. after 5 songs (and two hours of eating way too many finger foods), the lack of energy bummed me out and i left. while putting on my jacket, i looked up and saw tim staring at my departure. i felt bad, but honestly i was hoping for something cool and fun.

note to the record label, just because a venue is 'cool' doesn't mean it's good for a listening party. ironically enough, club cielo was next door and their sound system is ear popping amazing.

music festival alert: v festival 2007 announce the police, smashing pumpkins and beastie boys as this years headliners

the 2 day weekend V festival 2007 announced the police, the smashing pumpkins and the beastie boys as their headline acts for this year. once again the music festival will be held at baltimore MD's pimlico racetrack and is set to be a fully green event.

i had a blast last year with my friends as we moved back and forth from the mainstage (the killers, gnarls barkley) to the indie stage (clap your hands say yeah, scissor sisters, the flaming lips).

since this year is spread out to two days, i'm hoping that there will be alot more interesting acts performing this year. i'll keep you posted as i hear more.

hilarious: adam sandler and don cheadle - endless love

adam sandler and don cheadle - endless love
[this is something that usually goes on my pop culture blog wongie's world, but it's just too funny to not share here! adam sandler filled in for david letterman the other day and well... this is what happened when his co-star don cheadle popped in for a chat.]

live wongie: amy winehouse (live at bayswater porchester hall)

since many of us can't get into her current US showcase tour, why not spend some time with my favorite female singer of the moment, amy winehouse, via the web? taken from a live performance at bayswater's porchester hall recently.

amy winehouse - valerie (live at bayswater)

amy winehouse - back to black (live at bayswater)

[i'm telling you, if disney decides to redo their rides like this, then i'll go like, now! by the way, i love this song, especially the instrumental breakdown at the end. brilliant!]

bjork on tour!

according to bjork.com, our fave icelandic diva will be making the tour rounds beginning with the awesome coachella festival in april. she'll then come on over to good ol NYC for three shows at three different venues (including the apollo theatre!). if you wanna get tix, check out the presale dates and her website for further details. i'm soooo there!

hype wongie: feist

feist - my moon my man
[though the release of her album isn't due for another 2 months, little snippets of feist have been popping up all over. here is one of the webisodes using her 1st single.]

feist - sea lion woman
[thanks to stereogum, check out this new webisode using a cover of the nina simone classic to hype her upcoming album the reminder]

dance bitch dance: faithless feat cass fox - music matters (axwell remix)

faithless feat cass fox - music matters (axwell remix)
[gosh, it's been a LONG time since faithless have put out a relevant club anthem. add remixers axwell to spice the track up and well, you have one of the prettiest sweet club tunes i've heard in awhile. play this one loud and lose yourself!]

mark ronson feat daniel merriweather - stop me (world premiere)

mark ronson feat daniel merriweather - stop me
[the lesson of this silly video is don't pick up stray shoes, they're for the homeless. the plus side of this great cover is that it launches mark ronson's upcoming album. that i can pick up!]

mika - love today (world premiere)

mika - love today
[shot in quintessential sophie mueller style (which is a good thing), every time i listen to this song, i think mika sounds like miss piggy (which can also be a good thing).]

dance bitch dance: groove armada - get down

groove armada - get down
[taken from their highly anticipated album soundboy rock, here is the awesome 1st single and video (featuring dancing and bonking bunnies!) which i leaked out last week. pete tong has been playing tracks from the album and it's AWESOME! i can't wait!]

songs we like: peter bjorn and john - young folk

peter bjorn and john - young folk (cousin cole re-edit)[thanks to discobelle for the subtle remix]
[this swedish band was all the blog rage last year, but i can't help but love this chirpy tune at the moment. in my ipod on serious repeat, if you haven't heard my current fave band, then nows a good time to get acquainted. press play and whistle along!]

bbc live lounge: mika & natasha bedingfield rework some current classics

mika - hips don't lie (bbc live lounge with jo whiley)
[thanks to kevipod]

natasha bedingfield - chasing cars (bbc live lounge with jo whiley)
[thanks to natasha bedingfield fansite]

OTT explosion: meatloaf featuring jennnifer hudson

meatloaf feat. jennifer hudson - the future just ain't what it used to be
[i was going through my new music and came across this track from meatloaf's insane bat out of hell III. this definitely falls under the 'what the frick' category. not only is it totally out of control but perhaps hints at the possibility that songwriter jim steinman might pen a tune for jennifer's upcoming album, fingers crossed!]

videoland: james morrison, the fratellis, jamelia, avril lavigne, ne yo, little man tate, arcade fire, arctic monkeys, bonde do role, calvin harris

james morrison - undiscovered
[gosh, has it been single #4 already? call me a cheese ball, but i just really love the tone of james' voice and it helps that his songs are so darn catchy.]

the fratellis - baby fratelli
[i'm slowly beginning to LOVE this band with every listen of their debut album costello music. the fact that the hilarious film hot fuzz (starring my unofficial boyfriend simon pegg) has used this song as their theme makes me love the guys even more!]

jamelia - no more
[even though this samples the stranglers (imagine the money it cost!) the song still emotes a nice honest sound that i haven't heard from jamelia in awhile]

avril lavigne - girlfriend
[this 80's girl punk meets 60's girl group sound really works for me. too bad avril is such a cow in real life.]

ne yo - because of you
[love this r&b singer/songwriter, but can he stop trying to
a)dance
b)pretend to be a sex symbol
it's just kind of gross really.]

little man tate - this must be love
[what a pub band. the lead singer is kind of cute in that normal kind of way.]

arcade fire - keep the car running (live on snl)
[i know that neon bible is already old news for loads of people, but i have to be honest and say that i have yet to really sit down and listen to the album from beginning to end. that doesn't mean i don't enjoy this band, i'm just lazy...]

arctic monkeys - brianstorm
[so it's really called brian-storm. ok. the weirder fact is that they have made a video with booty crazy dancers. what has the world come to?]

bonde do role - solta o frango
[a wongie favorite a few months back, i'm just psyched that i'm checking out this band at the end of this month (with producer diplo on dj decks to boot!)]

calvin harris - acceptable in the 80's
[is this guy really as amazing as the hype around him? i'm not so sure, but the retro love in this song makes me tolerate him for now.]

red hot chili peppers - hump de pump (world premiere)

red hot chili peppers - hump de pump
[though i haven't been into these guys for awhile, i have to admit that the video is totally cute. directed by chris rock, it just makes you want to join a block party this second.]

travis - closer (world premiere)

travis - closer
[after a self imposed 3 year break, the cutest blokes in rock music return with more lovely tunes to get all wistful to. the sad thing is that they look much older these days which also means that i'm getting old too. argh!!!!]

amy winehouse - back to black (world premiere)

amy winehouse - back to black
[ok fine, this is going on a bit of overkill with the amy coverage, but i just found this video. just proves how much i currently love this song.]

live wongie: amy winehouse @ bowery ballroom, ny

part of the 'live in london' series (also featuring the unfortunately amateur pipettes) before everyone got shipped off to this years SXSW , amy winehouse made a rare stateside appearance to showcase her just released album back to black. packed to the hilt, most of the attendees were already familiar with amy's music and would lovingly heckle her with song requests in between her taking sips of her drink ("beer? a lady drinks johnny walker and lemonade!", she retorted at one point).

true to her ruffhouse reputation, amy came on stage with her nest of nappy hair and polka dotted 50's dress, cussing and forgetting her lyrics every now and then. but when this lady sings, it's a truly revelatory experience. raw and honest, i haven't seen a performance this wonderfully real in ages (and i wasn't the only person in the room that felt that way. the crowd went crazy before her 1st encore ("sorry it took so long guys, i had to take a wee", she said after a good 5 minute break).

since this was just a showcase, the performance ended within an hour. but damn was it one of the best things i've seen in awhile. i can't wait for her to tour properly.
("it really means alot to me to perform for you guys here in new york. this sure isn't the olive garden," she smiled wickedly...god, i love her!)

two songs in particular made my evening, the current single 'back to black' and amy's cover of the zutons track 'valerie'. i've also thrown in a few gems just cause i'm nice. enjoy!:

amy winehouse - back to black
amy winehouse - love is a losing game (acoustic)
amy winehouse - valerie (zutons cover @ live lounge)
amy winehouse - me and mr jones (fuckery)

amy winehouse - back to black (brits nomination live show)
[god i love this song so much at the moment!]

live wongie: tunng / loney, dear @ union hall, brooklyn

it's rare that i go out to park slope in brooklyn. being one of those manhattanites that make a big deal when i go out to williamsburg (that would be one stop out of the island), imagine what 5-6 stops does for my sanity. of course in the real world, loads of cool people live in the slope and because of that, a few new music venues have popped up in the process.

union hall is one of them. a bar/lounge designed like a large library room (with bocce thrown in at the back), the music venue downstairs was intimate and cozily decorated. it was also nice being around a group of music lovers who respected each others floorspace and wasn't under the age of 25 (ok, there was this small lame group of girls who talked loudly about how they did their masters at yale. they were later shushed by the people around them. i smiled.)

anyway, i walked midway into tunng's set that evening. having not been a big fan of their album mothers daughters and other songs, i really didn't make the effort to catch their whole gig.

bad move on my part, turns out tunng shine when performing live. with roots in acoustic folk music, the rest of the band work around the mellow tunes with electronic soundclashes and dynamic beats. it's as if two bands were playing at the same time and somehow managed to find a common ground. the end result is something pretty impressive and unfortunately not reflected as well on their album.

if you ever get the chance to see this surprising revelation, you should definitely give them a listen.

here were two songs that stood out live:
tunng - the pioneers
tunng - jenny again

the real reason why i went to union hall was to check out one of my buzz bands of the season loney, dear. after hyping multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanangen for the past month, i really wanted to see if he was as good as i imagined him to be.

putting together a mesmerizing confident performance, loney dear as a band is extremely polished and surprisingly loud. though emil had a tendency to over sing his highnotes (his screech isn't as nice as his soft falsetto), the mix of melancholic lyrics over sweet choral harmonies made me appreciate his music even more.

now that subpop has picked up on this talent stateside, i'm sure loney's future albums will only get more polished and wonderfully personal.

here are some gems by loney, dear
loney, dear - the city, the airport
loney, dear - the city, the airport (david tross remix)
loney, dear - saturday waits

like what you hear, buy the album!

and here's another track that i shared previously by fellow swedes i'm from barcelona featuring loney, dear.

the gift of free music

apologies for being MIA these days, but i've been preoccupied with a few personal things and haven't really had the chance to upload new stuff. so for that reason, may i offer up some lovely legitimate freebies just for you!

from filter mag
kate havnevik - new day
[totally hoping to cash in before the real bjork returns, this is a nice lite-substitute]

from insound
peter bjorn and john - let's call it off
[i came in late with this band, but my current enjoyment makes the tardiness worth the wait. love these guys!]

loney dear
- i am john
[i'm actually checking them out later tonight and can't wait!!!!]

i'm from barcelona feat loney, dear - this boy
[sweet song from an equally sweet band. gosh, indie music really is awesome these days]

from forkcast
patrick wolf - the magic position
[a crapload of blogs went haywire for this guy, but i'm still kind of 'eh' about him. cute song though.]

the mary onettes - lost
[can't wait for the full length from these guys. one of fave finds of last year]

from wongie's music world
groove armada - get down
[they're back!!!! i've been walking around town thinking i'm such the sh*t with this song blasting away. it's a sad sight really]

basement jaxx - make me sweat
[HOT!!! if i knew how to pop and lock, this would be the track that i'd show off to. unfortunately i look preposterous in a track suit]

joss stone feat common - tell me what you wanna do
[a surprisingly solid sophomore album by joss stone features some nice collaborations (including one with lauryn hill). i'm leaning toward this track as one of my favorites.]

natasha bedingfield - i wanna have your babies

Watch More Bebo Tv       Uploaded by RCAlabelgroup.bebo.com
natasha bedingfield - i wanna have your babies
[not quite sure if this is a strong 1st single from her new album, but i love her to bits and really just don't care. can't wait to listen to the rest of this album!]

dance bitch dance: simian mobile disco - it's the beat

simian mobile disco - it's the beat
[discobelle tipped this way back in december and i've been bopping to this kicking club track since then. with elements of the classic technotronic "pump up the jam" thrown in, how can you not go a bit kooky over them? can't wait for the album!]

PS: here's a nice gem i found, check out this new rave mixtape these guys made recently

lots to smile about: lily allen - smile (remixes)

as lily allen continues her verbal throw down with amy winehouse in the UK, here in the peaceful US all we get is the anticipation of a full on tour.

so since we appear to be on the kindler, gentler side of lily (not!) may i present a few remixes of her 'classic' single "smile"

Lily Allen - Smile (Version Revisited)
Lily Allen - Smile (Mark Ronson Revisit)
Lily Allen feat Dujeous - Smile (Mark Ronson Revisit)
Lily Allen - Smile (Live on KCRW 12-5-2006)

and for something completely different here she is doing the song in simlish

lily allen - smile (simlish version)

mika coming to a town near you... ok, maybe not all of you

with the US FINALLY releasing mika's debut album life in cartoon motion on the 27th, the good news is that some of you will be able to check out the mikster in a few selected cities near you.

besides a few gigs at south by southwest in austin, he's also going to make appearances at the troubadour in LA (mar 25th) and the gramercy (mar 29) in nyc. i'm definitely trying to get my grubby hands on the NYC show!

see you there.

songs we like: lemar - tick tock

lemar - tick tock (original) [prefer this version better]
lemar - tick tock (kardinal beats retro remix)
[one of the few acts to have actually launched a successful music career via reality tv (the now defunct fame academy), lemar's retro smokey voice has always been an interesting combination within the urban landscape of pop today. luckily in the uk, his unique style has become an asset separating him from all the US emulating wannabes and allowing him three relatively successful albums to date.

taken from his latest album the truth about love, "tick tock" is by far my favorite track with it's old school chorus and sweet doo wop harmonies. unfortunately the released version is a remixed one which i think just takes away from the 'golly gee' sentiments of the original. shame.]
