LIVE WONGIE: justin bieber - baby (live @ soulkitchen)

justin bieber - baby (live @ soulkitchen)
[i don't know how the usual indie loving soul kitchen got justin bieber on board. but there's nothing like a kid rushing into a room to do a performance and jetting off after it's done like it was the equivalent of a meet and greet. awkward and amazing at the same time. oh to be a teenage pop star...]

LIVE WONGIE: v v brown - shark in the water (live @ jimmy kimmel)

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: shakira - gypsy

shakira - gypsy
[bless tennis champion rafael nadal for playing the role of 'boyfriend' in this video, but their on screen chemistry is so one sided (with shakira doing all the work). luckily the song is so darn catchy, so it doesn't really matter!]

CHARITY SINGLE: shane macgowan and friends - i put a spell on you (for haiti)

shane macgowan and friends - i put a spell on you (for haiti)
[what a strange but kind of cool choice for a charity single. shane macgowan (pogues) gathers together a ragtag group of rockers and singers (chrissy hynde, nick cave, the sex pistol's glen matlock, JOHNNY DEPP (?), primal scream's bobby gillespie, newbies paloma faith and eliza doolittle) to cover screamin’ jay hawkins’s classic blues song (i swear at one point it looks like all your drunk uncles have taken over the karaoke machine!). all proceeds go to the dublin based concern worldwide who have been aiding haiti for the past 16 years.]

[at first it doesn't work, but then it just... does! amazing stuff by ellie!]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: shakira - gypsy (freemasons remix)

shakira - gypsy (freemasons remix)
[wow, the freemasons drop their cheesy hi-nrg remix style and offers up a more lively rendition of shakira's insanely catchy song. i kind of like this version better than the original (and i LIKED the original). great job boys!]

stornoway - zorbing

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: band of skulls - i know what i am

band of skulls - i know what i am
[chosen as the single of the week for apple before it was even finished, then getting on the 'new moon' soundtrack, it's a surprise this track hasn't blown to insane proportions! the mix of led zeppelin guitars with singalong white stripe-esque vocals is just rock perfection... and we LOVE it!]

the swell season - in these arms
[oh sigh... this is a definite swooning tune for the week. simply gorgeous!]

NEW KANYE WEST!: kanye west - coldest winter

kanye west - coldest winter
[how random, a new video and mix of this song by kanye gets released quietly (with no kanye in sight, thank goodness). it's a beautiful video and a reminder that no matter what you think of the rapper, at least he's good for a something different]

LIVE WONGIE: hot chip - one life stand (bbc radio 1 live in session)

BEST VIDEO WITH A CELEBRITY THIS WEEK: charlie winston - i love your smile

charlie winston - i love your smile
[brother of tom baxter, charlie has become a bigger artist in france than anywhere else (which is probably the reason for the collaboration with french mega-actress audrey tatou). his album 'hobo' has already gone 3x platinum in france and is looking to slowly make waves outside of the gallic speaking regions where he is so loved.]

NEW FIONN REGAN!: fionn regan - catacombs

fionn regan - catacombs
[irish singer/songwriter fionn is one of the countries more respected younger gems crafting lush catchy songs over his scruffy vocals. in his latest album 'shadow of an empire', fionn is definitely trying some new stuff by trying out a more rock guitar based orchestration. it's worth a check out]

justin bieber feat ludacris - baby
[ok fine... this is insanely catchy! i've been avoiding this teen sensation only cause i feel like i've aged myself out of his audience, but i'm no elitist to catchy songs (which this one clearly is!)]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: plan b - she said

plan b - she said
[the continuing story of 'the defamation of strickland banks' (aka the name of plan b's album) is a fascinating project that not only incorporates a plotline of a dethroned singer (due to a sex scandal, no less, featuring the current star of skins, kaya scodelario), but also showcases ben's vocals and rapping through a 60's northern soul filter. it's all pretty cool, if you ask me!

PS: if you want to see the 1st part of this ongoing series, check out the awesome video for the single 'gone too long' here]

NEW DAWN LANDES!: dawn landes - young girl

dawn landes - young girl
[taken off her recently released album 'sweetheart rodeo', dawn changes up her chilled out country stance and goes for a stomp em down sound instead. not as instantly swoonable as her previous work, but she is a strong enough artist to appreciate and support openly here on wongie.]

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

NEW RIHANNA!: rihanna - rude boy

rihanna - rude boy
[this is a nice revelation, rihanna can actually have... FUN! after the dark and moody previous releases (which i have to be honest, was TOO dark and moody, even for riri), this track feels like the sky just opened up. not only showcasing rihanna's barbadian heritage, the girl gets to dance (and she good at it!). throw in 80's visual references and you get the perfect bubble gum video of the moment!]

AUDIO BUZZ: major lazer feat busy signal & m.i.a. - sound of siren

mika & danielle de niese - rain (live @ popstar to operastar)

mika - blame it on the girls (live @ so you think you can dance uk)
[mika has been very busy this last week in the UK as he made two very high profile appearances on popstar to operastar and so you think you can dance uk. these two performances totally showcase his diversity and kind of re-ignites interest on an album that lost alot of steam when it was released last year. i'm sold (especially this fabulous pop/opera fusion of 'rain')]

LIVE WONGIE: sade - soldier of love (live @ late night with david letterman)

WONGIE DISCOVERY: jonsi - go do / go do (acoustic version)

jonsi - go do
[from wikipedia:
Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson is the guitarist and vocalist for the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. He is known for his use of a cello bow on guitar and his falsetto voice.
On December 1, 2009, Jónsi's official website, jonsi.com, was launched, in anticipation of his upcoming debut solo album, "Go," being released the week of April 5th, 2010.
In late-January 2010, Birgisson had announced that Sigur Rós was on "an indefinite hiatus," as the band had scrapped plans for a new album previously announced to be released in 2010, saying that "they were just rumors." The band has decided to take the year off, as several members of Sigur Ros recently had children, and as Jonsi's solo career has been developing.]

erik hassle - russian roulette (rihanna cover) (live @ bbc live lounge)
