WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: the irrepressibles - forget the past

the irrepressibles - forget the past (the mirror mirror spectacle at the queen elizabeth hall)
[as a lover of all things dramatic, this song and video kind of explains itself. i'm in heaven! (and yes, the antony-esque vocals help too!) i may have just found my favorite 10 piece band of the year!]

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: janelle monae feat big boi - tightrope

janelle monae feat big boi - tightrope
[and when i mean soul, i mean SOUL power! janelle monae returns with a hot brand spanking new single and hopefully a proper chance into cross over into a wider collective of music appreciation. her album 'arch android' comes out in may, you should have full fledged love for her by then!]

AUDIO BUZZ: christina aguilera - not myself tonight

christina aguilera - not myself tonight
[this is a perfectly fun high energy jam, but all the talk of christina working with indie acts like sia and ladytron makes me think that those sessions have been scrapped for more commercial fare like this polow da don track. i'm really hoping the rest of the album will be a surprise]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: delorean - stay close

delorean - stay close
[with organic dance based indie bands like ruby suns and yeasayer circling our radar in a serious way this year, it looks like it's time to add another band to the list; delorean. hailing from spain, this duo has created one of the most outdoorsy 'dance' songs i've heard in awhile. spatial and trippy, it took me awhile to get into this track. but i'm glad i gave it another chance cause it's LOVE-LEE!]

DANCE BITCH DANCE: burns - so many nights

burns - so many nights
[uk dj/remixer offers up a sassy smart dance single in conjunction with his just released EP under the same name. already gaining serious buzz via his remixes for frankmusik, passion pit and the gossip, it's nice to see him turn his skillz onto his own music. good stuff!]

two door cinema club - something good can work
[oh we've been fans of this track since last october and now it's getting a full blown label push! don't worry...the element of utter joy that made us fall in love with this song is still there (with some new grooves thrown in), cementing this band as one of the best of 2010!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: dragonette - easy

dragonette - easy
[i have to admit that dragonette have always been a blog favorite that i've been kind of 'meh' about. they are cool for sure, but never enough for me to go crazy about. well... i officially take my blase back and offer up a massive bowl of enthusiasm based on this wonderful indie pop release. hypnotically simple, there are elements of goldfrapp circa 'number 1' here, but to me, that's not a bad comparison! btw, their album 'fixin to thrill' is out now!]

NEW KEANE!: keane feat k'naan - stop for a minute

keane feat k'naan - stop for a minute
[taken off their upcoming 'night train' EP, keane seems to be expanding their musicality by collaborating with rappers such as kanye west, tigarah and k'naan. not sure i'm digging this single, but i'm definitely curious enough to check out the rest of the collection when it comes out in may. if you're having trouble watching the video click here]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: kelis - acapella

kelis - acapella

NEW ERYKAH BADU!: erykah badu - window seat

erykah badu - window seat
[ms badu returns with another collection of neo soul in the form of her album 'new amerykah part two (return of the ankh)'. though it seems like she continues to have stuff to say about the state of her world, erykah's musical flow is definitely more challenging these days. can't wait to hear the rest of this album.]

[as some of you know, rufus lost his mother back in january to cancer and he was able to bring her over to the UK a month before to perform at the royal albert hall along with his sister martha. this was the last performance they made as a family on stage and its totally amazing.]

WONGIE DISCOVERY: the crookes - backstreet lovers / colliers wife / by the seine

[any band that sites the shirelles and the ronettes as musical influences will easily fall favorably in our musical books. hailing from sheffield and naming their band after the suburb that they were living in (ie: crookes), this four piece write wistful happy gangly guitar pop tunes that will easily bring a smile to your face, all the while engaging you with that retro twist (as wikipedia called it, "the smiths at their most twee-est", which in our book is a good thing!). the band recently made their US debut at sxsw and hopefully more buzz will happen when they release their debut album later this year. check out some wonderful releases that came out last year!]

LIVE WONGIE: freelance whales - ghosting / generator 1st floor / generator 2nd floor (live @ npr music sxsw)

[a few days back, the ny based band, freelance whales went down to sxsw to offer their brand of arcade fire lite music to the throngs of music lovers. what went down was probably one of the festivals biggest success stories. with many reviewers calling their album 'weather vanes' derivative indie muck, the band ended up winning many of these naysayers over with their spot on live performances and rousing insta-anthems. lucky for us, npr music got the band to perform three songs and we can now see what all the (well deserved) fuss is about. yaaay freelance whales!]

cheryl cole - parachute (live @ sport relief)
[cheryl went on sport relief yesterday to perform her latest single amid a high profile divorce. definitely coming off happy and gracious, hopefully her appearance helped the charity event raise a decent portion of the final 23 million pound tally. for those who don't know about sport relief, it is a UK charity that incorporates famous faces from sports and entertainment through fun cool fund raising events throughout the year, culminating in yesterdays big telethon.]

WONGIE HAPPY SONG OF THE WEEK: darwin deez - radar detector

darwin deez - radar detector
[from the independent:

"Darwin Deez are a pretty strange and enduring looking bunch.

A crossbreed of The Strokes, yet they possess a personality and sense of humour, (much unlike the Last Nite trendies), and there is an element of Flight of the Conchords- if you can manage to take that seriously.

Dressed up in bright pastel colours, and almost resembling a tube of Loveheart candies, this colourful bunch look like they’ve dragged themselves out of a 80s’ New York.

Singer, Darwin (“Darwin is the name my parents gave me. Deez is not my real last name though. It's like Sasha Fierce”), who personally reminds me of a elfin type creature, sports a shiny luscious mane of brown curls (on a recent 6music interview he admitted he doesn’t use shampoo. Pop fact number one!), complete with a headband to hold his pretty locks in place, and a turquoise jumper that looks like something I wore in nostalgic family photos dating back to the early 90s; this front man pixie is something else."

as for the video, personally, i kind of dig this version shot by the f.d.c. featuring the kids of P.S. 217]

darwin deez - radar detector (f.d.c. video version)
[here's more info on the FDC program:
FDC/PS 217 Parent Association After School Program is a collaborative effort between PS 217 and FDC to provide after-school activities to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The after school program provides working parents with an affordable option for after school programming and wraparound care for other school sponsored after school activities.]

LIVE WONGIE: rufus wainwright - zebulon (live @ qtv) / zebulon (live @ the guardian)

rufus wainwright - zebulon (live @ qtv)
[the last track of rufus' upcoming album 'all days are nights: songs for lulu', the song was actually written back in 2007 about an unrequited love named zebulon. somehow he popped up on a walk home and these are the thoughts put to music. coming off the loss of his mother kate mcgarrigle, to say his upcoming album is 'personal' is an understatement.

want more? you can hear the rest of the interview here (plus hear the moving song 'martha')

still have to obsess over rufus (like we did)? check out another version of this song...]

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: kid cudi feat mgmt & ratatat - pursuit of happiness

kid cudi feat mgmt & ratatat - pursuit of happiness
[by no means do i condone the kind of pursuits kid cudi suggests, but damn, it probably would be even more trippy to watch this video if i did live in a state of 'happiness'. this song was released last year, but this is the alternate version. nevertheless, its a hot video!]

LIVE WONGIE: mumford & sons - cousins (vampire weekend cover) / the cave (live @ bbc live lounge)

mumford & sons - cousins (vampire weekend cover)
[this is a really nice fit! apparently ezra keonig approved!]

mumford & sons - the cave
[le sigh... i just want to join the travelling choir of mumford and sons just so i can sing along to their rousing anthems]

WONGIE DISCOVERY: tinashe - mayday / mr presumption (channel 4 intros) / always like this (bombay bicycle club cover) / mayday (acoustic)

[here's a nice discovery, 25 year old tinashe hails from zimbabwe but has been toiling the UK indie scene for a few years before getting signed by amy winehouse's a&r rep to a major label. the result is an eclectic sound that's classic r&b mixed in with straight up acoustic soul and a dash of indie thrown in. weirdly, his wonderful debut single sounds a tad overproduced when placed by his awesome simple performances. i've included a few highlights so you can decide for yourself. nevertheless, he's going to be big in 2010!]

tinashe - mayday

tinashe - mr presumption (channel 4 intros)

tinashe - always like this (bombay bicycle club cover)

tinashe - mayday (acoustic)
[from tinashe's myspace page, words from the boy himself:

I was originally shipped over from Zimbabwe so I could eventually grow to become a doctor/lawyer and wire money back home via Western Union, that didn't go so well... I blame/thank MJ.

I smiled & nodded to avoid bullying over my African accent at school until the Eastenders elocution lessons started to pay off... I can now slip in between both rather seamlessly... I grew up in Hackney. I will always be a Hackney boy but I'm enjoying being in a state of flux. Life is bigger than London.

I'm currently more in love with my guitar than I have ever been. I make guitar music. I am not ashamed to say l love pop music. That's what its all about for me. Good music fuelled by the world around me.]

ok go - this too shall pass
[i'm SO behind on this (since there are over 5 million views on youtube by now), but the band ok go asked syyn labs to collaborate on a two story 'rube goldberg machine' contraption set to their latest song. the result is magical, crazy and just the coolest 4 mins you'll see in awhile (if you haven't already!). brilliant!!!}

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: professor green feat ed drewett - i need you tonight

professor green feat ed drewett - i need you tonight
[though it may seem a bit too easy to JUST sample the classic INXS guitar riff, luckily professor green has come up with a fun catchy rap thats cute enough to propel his way into the top 10. the true test is to see what this guy will have up his sleeve for the next round!]
