WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: local natives - who knows who cares
local natives - who knows who cares
[after spending a week in the UK where pop music filled my every aural pore, i'm happily back in the new or york catching up with my appreciation of other music. and appreciate i do with this gorgeously epic local natives track. this la band has slowly turned into one of my favorite bands of the year by putting out amazing track after amazing track from their 'gorilla manor' album and this latest is no exception!]
LIVE WONGIE: rihanna - only girl in the world (live @ snl) / (live @ x factor) / ronnie and clyde (snl digital short)
rihanna - only girl in the world (live @ snl)
[damn, she performs this nicely! thanks to mr yardie for the vid]
rihanna - only girl in the world (live @ x-factor)
[then she flies across the pond over night and performs the same song live again! holy wow)
rihanna and shy ronnie - ronnie and clyde (snl digital short)
[the funny couple reunite for more hip hop mayhem with the shyest MC in the business!)

WONGIE POP VIDEO OF THE WEEK: katy perry - firework
katy perry - firework
[nothing like bringing together 250 fans from all over the world to dance on your dave meyers directed video! call me a bright lights lover, but i was hooked when the fireworks shoot out of katy's brassiere!]
katy perry's firework project
[meet some of the fans and watch katy moved to tears when she sees them for the first time (then lose your awwww factor when the t-mobile branding pops up at the end... ah commercialism!)]
HMMM: shayne ward - gotta be somebody
shayne ward - gotta be somebody
[shayne, there is a reason why you are not a big star by now. you allow your team to make you release twee cover versions of nickelback songs, you say yes to gratuitous videos like this which totally debunk whatever 'talent' you had in the past and simplify it up to JUST your looks, and you just kind of suck. oh and you're kind of hot btw! (making all my previous points moot in the legitimacy dept)]
NEW ROBYN!: robyn - indestructible

robyn - indestructible
FINALLY! the soundtrack for the past few weeks finally has images to match the song. i had a different visual take in my head, but writhing nubile young things will do just fine ;)

POP BOY: greyson chance - waiting outside the lines
greyson chance - waiting outside the lines
[wow this was fast! after popping up as a viral sensation back in april, the 13 year old singer/songwriter showed up on ellen in may and was quickly signed on to her imprint eleveneleven which now releases his debut single you hear above. though the comparison to justin bieber is inevitable, i kind of find this kid more interesting since he sings from the place of an internalized underdog. dramatic music at 13, we like!]
WONGIE GUILTY PLEASURE OF THE WEEK: n.e.r.d. - hypnotize u
n.e.r.d. - hypnotize u
[i know it's produced by daft punk, but previous listens to this track left me kind of 'meh'. but i was asked recently to check it out again and somehow walking through london at the moment with its cold chilled wetness has opened up my appreciation of it's simple repetitiveness.]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: mcfly feat taio cruz - shine a light
mcfly feat taio cruz - shine a light
[further proof that a good song doesn't discriminate, boy band mcfly have written themselves a perfect single that just ranks as one of the best pop tracks out at the moment. i've never really had any thoughts about these guys, but now that they've hit my radar, i am a (better late than never) fan!]
WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: kanye west feat pusha t - runaway (extended version / full length clean version)
kanye west feat pusha t - runaway (extended video version)
[here it is, the highly anticipated video directed by kanye himself!]

DANCE BITCH DANCE: afrojack feat eva simons - take over control
afrojack feat eva simons - take over control
[actually this radio version is too rushed and not at all interesting like the original version that came out a few months ago. check out the better version below!]
afrojack feat eva simons - take over control (extended version)
WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: jamie woon - night air / night air (ramadanman refix)
jamie woon - night air
[what a lovely chill out song! soulful and haunting in that 4am kind of style, but surrounded by a post club feel, james himself calls his music ‘one man, an acoustic guitar and a Line6 DL4’. all i know is that this is a wonderful discovery for the day and immediately up there as my song of the week. follow my lead and get lost in this song will ya?]
want more? check out this ramadanman refix of the chill out track
jamie woon - night air (ramadanman refix)
WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: james blake - limit to your love (feist cover)

james blake - limit to your love (feist cover)
[this is just AMAZING! what a haunting cover of the feist track! filled with silences, dub bass interludes and a overlapping sense of sadness throughout, there is a certain amount of genius within the confines of these 3 mins. i can't stop playing this over and over and over and over again! brilliant!]
NEW FLORENCE!: florence & the machine - heavy in your arms
florence & the machine - heavy in your arms
[originally taken off the 'eclipse' soundtrack, the song is now released in it's own right (with weird uber grainy video). not my favorite of her discography, but i love her enough to appreciate everything she does!]
WONGIE CRAZY SONG OF THE WEEK: my chemical romance - na na na
my chemical romance - na na na
[oh my gosh, this song is all over the place! it's like these boys decided to make a green day meets muse hybrid track filtered through a grinder of crazy. throw in an insane video and you've got the most hyper song of the week! welcome back my chemical romance!]
DANCE BITCH DANCE: roll deep feat alesha dixon - take control
roll deep feat alesha dixon - take control
[not sure why this crew is 8 members deep, but thats how many it takes to put this pop/rap/dance/street hybrid posse. this track has end credit dance montage written all over it!]
DANCE BITCH DANCE: steve aoki and armand van helden - brrrat!
steve aoki and armand van helden - brrrat!
[omg, it's like my early 90's club days are back! this is awesome!]

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE MONTH: foals - blue blood
foals - blue blood
[director chris sweeney has practically shot the highpoint of a fictitious movie in which all is revealed during this performance. it's pure brilliance and the kid is AMAZING!]
HMM...: willow smith - whip my hair
willow smith - whip my hair
[firstly, i have whiplash just watching willow do this. secondly, what kind of random song is this? thirdly, if she wasn't the spawn of will and jada, would she even have gotten through the front door of the record label? i'm just asking questions... i do have to say she does have ALOT of energy and the hook does offer some adult sized swagger, but i sure need a neck massage now.]
WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: mumford and sons - white blank page (live @ bookshop sessions)
mumford and sons - white blank page (live @ bookshop sessions)
[since there isn't an official video for this wonderful current single, i'm going to post a acoustic performance the mumfords did in a bookstore last year. love love LOVE this song (and album) a year onwards!]
WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: pixie lott - broken arrow
pixie lott - broken arrow
[i'm coming into this sweetly formulaic pop ballad a tad late, but better late then never right?]
WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: yelle - la musique
yelle - la musique
[she's baaack! our favorite frenchie with sass returns with a nice ode to popular music! can't wait to hear more from our gal!]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: alexis jordan - happiness
alexis jordan - happiness
[what an unabashed lovely pop song! signed on to jay z and producers starsmith's label star roc/roc nation, the hitmakers are also behind this breezy concoction. i like and so should you!]
DANCE BITCH DANCE: tim berg - seek bromance
tim berg - seek bromance
[ok, this video is a tad beyond bromance and more into gaymance territory. pity the hot babe in denial throughout the vid!]
POP BOYS: jls - love you more (bbc children in need official single)
jls - love you more (bbc children in need official single)
[oh what lovely pop cheese! it's for charity so you don't have to feel bad that you actually like this song!]

WONGIE COVER OF THE WEEK: marina and the diamonds - perfect stranger (magnetic man cover)(live @ bbc live lounge)
marina and the diamonds - perfect stranger (magnetic man cover)(live @ bbc live lounge)
[good ol sheena beaston got first tips on this wonderful marina and the diamonds live lounge cover version of the amazing magnetic man track. still was hoping some breakbeats would pop in at the end, but this chilled version is just haunting!]

mark ronson & the business intl feat boy george and andrew wyatt - somebody to love me
[how genius to pair up boy george with andrew wyatt of miike snow together. the end result is a wonderful track that ranks as one of the better collaborations of the year! cool video by saam while we're giving away props!]
WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: robyn - indestructible

[yeah, i just may have died and gone to heaven. brillant!]
UPDATE: check out the remixes!!
Indestructible by robyn
POP GAL: rihanna - only girl (in the world)
rihanna - only girl (in the world)
[the 1st half of this video doesn't quite work here (riri looking way too tranny for her own good!), but director anthony mandler saves the day when he finally introduces some serious set pieces to match the euphoric dance poppiness of the song. yaaay!]
WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: hurts - stay
hurts - stay
[this could easily be filled under 'drama' song of the week, but i love this band too much to limit them to JUST that category. 'epic' is the REAL word that comes to mind.]

THE SOUND OF BAD: duffy - well well well
duffy - well well well
[oh my gosh, how quickly a highly buzzed act/voice can turn grating! maybe it's the fact that her voice just doesn't fit the modernized mode or just the fact that when you hear 'well well well' over and over again, you just want to punch a hole in the wall. ugh! hopefully the rest of the album is bearable!]
SOUNDTRACK TROLL: gwyneth paltrow - country strong (ost country strong)
gwyneth paltrow - country strong (ost country strong)
[yo, gwyneth's country strong y'all!!]
country strong trailer
WONGIE GUILTY PLEASURE OF THE WEEK: far east movement feat cataracs & dev - like a g6
far east movement feat cataracs & dev - like a g6
[trust me, there's nothing more 'eh' to me than stupid swagger songs about partying hard. throw in the fact that the far east movement are of asian heritage AND they like to sing songs about partying hard with a side of swagger; so in theory i should really be hatin these boys! but guilty pleasure be damned cause i totally dig this silly song (maybe it's the 808 bump that gets my stupid dancefloor juices flowing)! party like a g6 yo, then go and listen to an indie alt band to clean out your shame ;)]
NEW KID CUDI!: kid cudi feat kanye west - erase me
kid cudi feat kanye west - erase me
[nice song, but is it just me or does this totally sound like a weezer track? oh and check out the mclovin cameo]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: operator please - volcanic
operator please - volcanic
[aussie band operator please have come a long way since their 'song about ping pong' days! definitely more polished and geared for a more cross pond appreciation, this latest single is a catchy piece of awesome that you gotta hear now!]

[my favorite scottish raspy ranged lass returns with a new ditty that is sweet sweet!]
WONGIE DISCOVERY: maximum balloon - if you return (feat little dragon) / groove me (feat theophilus london)
[producer extraodinaire dave sitek (tv on the radio, yeah yeah yeahs) has just released his solo album under the alter ego of maximum balloon. inviting alot of the acts that he has worked with in the past, his album is happy mix of west coast vibe meets the electro pop of the 80's. it's a wonderful mix! check out two tracks from his album below!]
maximum balloon feat little dragon - if you return

NEW VIDEO!: la roux - in for the kill (US video version)
la roux - in for the kill (US video version)
[is it just me, or does this US version have a different arrangement from the original? not sure which one i like more...]
personally, i still dig this remix version over everything!
la roux - in for the kill (skream's let's get ravey remix)
DANCE BITCH DANCE: ciara - gimme dat
ciara - gimme dat
[the dance factor of ciara is second to none (back when she first came out, she actually had some awesome songs to support it), but now it just seems like it's all dance and nothing else. we all know that the girl is a movement genius, but she should really focus on getting some hitmeisters on board too...]

LIVE WONGIE: joe mcelderry - ambitions (live @ x factor)
joe mcelderry - ambitions (live @ x factor)
[bless him! i love how they've thrown in a massive amount of dancers (like a bollywood movie) in order to give the performance some meat. oh to be lifted by dermot!!]
