lupe fiasco - the show goes on
[nothing like a crowd pleasing new single to re-launch lupe fiasco to the masses! just in time for the new year!]

NEW KANYE!: kanye west feat rick ross, jay z, nicki minaj & bon iver - monster

kanye west feat rick ross, jay z, nicki minaj & bon iver - monster
[it's all kind of 'meh' with this over stylized jake nava video as all these rappers step up and wax how awesome they are vs. the fakers out there. then nicki prances up to the mic and pardon my french, fucking rips EVERYONE a new one! insanity how awesome she is when she guests on other people's songs!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: matt bishop / hey marseilles - rio (acoustic tour video)

matt bishop / hey marseilles - rio (acoustic tour video version)
[we talked about hey marseilles back in august as a wonderfully lush band with songs that are full of flourish and energy. it was the kind of description that felt final, but fast forward to xmas night where i've found myself in a bit of post holiday food coma, and like a dream, i came across this mellow version performed by lead singer matt bishop in the vastness of a church. the end result is both gorgeously haunting and perfect for the sentimental xmas haze i am floating in. if you're also in this state, turn the lights down, press play and just bask. happy xmas yo!]

WONGIE SONG / VIDEO OF THE WEEK: bag raiders - sunlight

bag raiders - sunlight
[aussie duo bag raiders return with yet another insta-fave tune for the week (right before xmas no less!). throw in the fact they've also made a cute (well somewhat sad ending) animal lovin video makes these guys the current coolest boys on the wongie music world block! LOVE them!]

NEW THE JOY FORMIDABLE!: the joy formidable - austere

the joy formidable - austere
[hard to believe that the joy formidable have yet to release their debut album (they've been an indie band favorite on our site for a good while), but the kids finally bring us their 1st ever collection of songs in the form of 'the big roar' and their brand spanking new raucous single 'austere'. 2011 is looking good don't you think?]

FREE MP3 YO!: warpaint - shadows (the neon lights remix)

warpaint - shadows (the neon lights remix)
[hot remixers the neon lights have sprinkled their magic on indie band warpaint and given their current single 'shadows' a lovely haunting slow groove. the remix has become so popular that it looks likely to be the new version for release. nice one neon lights! if you like what you hear, why not get a copy for yourselves cause the great folks at rough trade are offering the remix for free! merry xmas indeed!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: yasmin - on my own / on my own (live @ bbc 1xtra maida vale)

yasmin - on my own
[holy shizz! an awesome song to land on my doorstep just weeks before the end of the year! dj yasmin shahmir rolled around in hip hop circles before mixing it up with the UK dubstep/grime scene. the result is a multi-influenced 1st single that has some serious urban swagger mixed in with old school massive attack vocals and a killer end credits drum beat that just begs to be looped! produced by the ever amazing shy fx, this song is friggin awesome and if i didn't hear it now, i would have claimed this as 2011's 1st great single. darn!]

yasmin - on my own (live @ bbc 1xtra maida vale)
[check out yasmin as she performs this song live at bbc. LOVE her!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: the vaccines - post break up sex

the vaccines - post break up sex
[after discovering these boys a mere month ago with their awesome, but short, 1st single, the vaccines quickly return with a catchy retro 2nd single that will also be known as the rebound anthem of the year. hoorah! love these guys!]

WONGIE INDIE (DANCE) SONG OF THE WEEK: chase & status feat liam bailey - blind faith

chase & status feat liam bailey - blind faith
[just when you think chase & status are incapable of releasing any more strong songs, they come out with this last minute gem. what a wonderful club choon with an equally raw video to boot. love these guys!]

INDIE DANCE BITCH DANCE: nero - me and you

nero - me and you
[what a wacky dubstep track to make it to the A-list on bbc's radio 1 playlist. i'm not sure i'm crazy about this track as much as some of nero's other jams, but if this is the one that's going to bring dubstep to the charts, then sure, why not.]

NEW KINGS OF LEON!: kings of leon - pyro

kings of leon - pyro
[ugh, i kind of detest these 'message' videos with blanket views into the dark souls of the human condition, only to find salvation by floating to a light. lame! the song isn't too bad, but i was thoroughly annoyingly visually distracted.]

Monday, December 20, 2010

WONGIE GAY SONG OF THE WEEK: rachel adedeji - follow the dj

rachel adedeji - follow the dj
[what constitutes a 'gay' song these days? autotune list of all your favorite things (check). singing about a DJ (check). writing bodies laying on top of each other for no reason (check). makeup and hair gone horribly horribly pointy and dramatic (check). a generic dance song that doesn't inspire or offend (check) 5 out of 5 = GAY! gay fave or not, hopefully this will also re-introduce x-factor loser rachel adedeji back to the charts cause she was always a favorite of her year. ]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: morning parade - under the stars

morning parade - under the stars
[though their instantly catchy song uses tried and true audio/vocal hooks (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), this 5 piece essex band will undoubtedly find crossover success in the coming months. you have been warned!]

UPDATE: wanna hear more? check out this sampler of 3 other tracks from their upcoming album

LIVE WONGIE: plan b - love goes down / in the bleak midwinter (live @ bbc radio 1 live lounge)

plan b - in the bleak midwinter (live @ bbc radio 1 live lounge)
[further proof that plan b's voice is AWESOME live! what a lovely remake of a classic xmas tune!]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: greyson chance - waiting outside the line / greyson chance feat ps 22 - paparazzi / waiting outside the line

greyson chance - waiting outside the lines
[kiddie youtube sensation greyson chance gets a proper video for his very strong 1st single "waiting outside the line". i've liked this song since i heard it back in october and can officially add the wongie stamp of approval for the masses. 2011 will be an interesting year for this talented prodigy!]

greyson chance feat ps 22 - paparazzi

scissor sisters - invisible light
[oh boy, this is like watching a trippy 70's hammer house of horror movie! weird cults, strange children, sexual frustration... all the best trappings of what a great video should have! directed by nicolas mendez, this is one awesome trip you'll want to watch over and over and over again!]

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

mariah carey feat patricia carey - o come all ye faithful

LIVE WONGIE: songwriters circle live feat david gray, kt tunstall & ray lamontagne

last month, the BBC4 series 'songwriters circle' invited david gray, kt tunstall and ray lamontagne to perform a special one hour concert in which they each took turns performing some of their most noted songs in a roundabout formation. intimate and wonderful, we've collected the whole concert for you to see... and it's truly a front row seat to 3 of the most talented artists around.

from the BBC4 press office:
"Three premier singer-songwriters play solo, taking it in turns to perform their signature songs and play together at west London's intimate Bush Hall. Chatting about the art and process of songwriting, Cheshire-born David Gray plays songs like Babylon and This Year's Love, plus material from his album Foundling. KT Tunstall plays Other Side and Black Horse and the Cherry Tree from her million-selling debut album Eye of the Telescope and songs from her recent Tiger Sun album. American Ray LaMontagne plays Trouble as well as songs from his fourth album God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise."

david gray - shine (live @ songwriters circle)

kt tunstall - other side of the world (live @ songwriters circle)

[up for grammy song of the year, this stripped down version showcases how wonderful the song truly is]

david gray - ain't no love (live @ songwriters circle)

GRAMMY 2011: miranda lambert - the house that built me

miranda lambert - the house that built me
[country darling miranda lambert got a major crossover nod this week with 3 grammy nods including best female country and best country collaboration. but the big coup is the fact that the gently sentimental 'the house that built me' is up for song of the year against cee-lo, lady antebellum, eminem feat rihanna and ray lamontange! great year indeed! not bad for a runner up of the reality country music competition 'nashville star'.]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: linkin park - waiting for the end

linkin park - waiting for the end
[what a wonderfully melodic catchy track from the linkin park crew. i have to admit that i kind of dismissed their nu-metal sounds awhile back, but this song is so strong that i might just give their album 'a thousand suns' a proper listen.]

POP GAL: edei - loved / in my bed (live @ studio 5)

edei - loved
[edei (aka emma deigmann) is a new UK soulstress ready to make her mark in a seemingly overcrowded market of old school soul with a pop twist. with every hook (think duffy and pixie lott's previous hits) thrown into the mix, her current single 'loved' surprisingly works. lets see if this girl will manage to fight through the coming months and not get lost in the cracks.]

edei - in my bed (live @ studio 5]
[check out edei live]

NEW MICHAEL JACKSON!: michael jackson feat akon - hold my hand

michael jackson feat akon - hold my hand

WONGIE GUILTY PLEASURE OF THE WEEK: dev feat the cataracs - bass down low / booty bounce

dev feat the cataracs - bass down low
[as the female MC on the #1 smash 'like a G6' for far east movement, it was only a matter of time that the focus would turn on the person who taught us about getting 'slizzered'. working with the beat meastros cataracs for her latest single, dev also showcases a cool ass video presence and actual VOCALS! trust me, this is going to be a big hit yo!]

dev feat the cataracs - booty bounce
[the original song in which the far east movement picked up the hook and introduced dev and the cataracs to a worldwide audience. sweet!]

NEW BJORK!: nick knight and bjork - to lee, with love, nick (a tribute to alexander mcqueen)

lee alexander mcqueen, 1969 - 2010

nick knight and bjork - to lee, with love, nick (a tribute to alexander mcqueen)
[taken off the nick knight short film dedicated to the late designer alexander mcqueen, bjork submitted a song to accompany the amazing visuals scheduled to open at the upcoming british fashion council awards. this is what nick had to say about his video and of alexander mcqueen:

'This film is my way of speaking about a very unique and important person who changed my life. My desire was to speak in some way about the dark and the light contained within Lee, and within us all.'
Nick Knight]

WONGIE COVER OF THE WEEK: rumer - alfie (rumer sings bacharach at christmas)

rumer - alfie (rumer sings bacharach at christmas)
[oh my GOD, rumer's voice is just PERFECT for the music of bacharach!!!! taken off the upcoming xmas collaboration single 'rumer sings bacharach at christmas', rumer covers the classic 'alfie' for the masses! throw in the fact that 'alfie' is one of bacharach's hardest songs ever... and that rumer just breezes through it like it was written for her... then finally admit that rumer really is a modern day dusty springfield incarnate... and you pretty much guess my excitement for this gal. yaaay!]

NEW FRANKMUSIK!: frankmusik - the fear inside

frankmusik - the fear inside
[cutey patootie frankmusik returns with new material from his upcoming album 'do it in the AM'. now part of the cherrytree records roster, hopefully his new allegiance will offer him a wider net of popularity access that seemed to have peaked early with his last album release. check out the new sexed up frankmusik in his latest video now... PS: if you can't see the video (cause they stupidly blocked it for the US, click on this site here]

HOT SOUNDTRACK: daft punk - derezzed (tron : legacy soundtrack)

daft punk - derezzed (tron : legacy soundtrack)
[probably one, if not the biggest, draw of the upcoming film 'tron: legacy' is the soundtrack to the film completely crafted by daft punk. sounding both orchestral and futuristic at the same time, the soundtrack is definitely one of the best of the year made better when you experience it with the film (make sure you go to a theater with serious surround sound). check out this teaser featuring the lovely olivia wilde!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: adele - rolling in the deep / (live @ ellen)

adele - rolling in the deep
[thanks to the wonderful jonali, we get the video premiere of adele's amazing 1st single off her highly anticipated '21' album. the song itself has been a bit of a slot burner on my ipod collection, but with this dynamic sam brown directed video, i'm hooked! HOOKED!]

want to hear this song again? why not check out her 1st ever US performance of this song on ellen below!

wretch 32 feat L - traktor

LIVE WONGIE: the wanted - lose my mind / all time low (live @ capital's jingle bell ball)

the wanted - lose my mind (live @ capital's jingle bell ball)
oh bless the boyband the wanted. it's pretty official that the boyband era 4.0 consists of guys who don't need to dance, hanging out, waving at fans and yelling 'jump' every now and then. thank goodness their songs are interesting for the genre!

the wanted - all time low (live @ capital's jingle bell ball)

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: ellie goulding - lights

ellie goulding - lights
[i was just reminded of one of my favorite tracks from ellie's album (and now re-issue 'bright lights') while watching the new promo for BBC's xmas spot. never understood why this track was never released as a proper single cause it's pretty darn amazing... therefore my song of the week!]

and just in case you want to see the BBC promo i was talking about, here it is:

Monday, December 06, 2010

WONGIE (RETRO) POP SONG OF THE WEEK: bruce springsteen - ain't good enough for you

bruce springsteen - ain't good enough for you
[taken off his current 2 CD album 'the promise', this track is a happy go lucky bruce during the 'darkness on the edge of town' sessions between the years of 1976-1978. boy is it a fun singalong track for the week!]

WONGIE XMAS 2010: best coast and wavves - got something for you

WONGIE XMAS 2010: neon trees - wish list

neon trees - wish list
[aw... the good folks of neon trees offer up their take on the xmas single and it's quite good! channeling some phil spector, the catchy ditty even has sleigh bells in it's proceedings. such fun!]

WONGIE XMAS 2010: hurts - all i want for christmas is new year's day

hurts - all i want for christmas is new year's day
[of course hurts would put out a melancholic synth pop melody about xmas! thats why we love them so!]

GLEE HIGHLIGHTS: glee cast - baby it's cold outside / merry christmas, darling

blaine and kurt - baby, it's cold outside
[oh the swoon quota rises to xmas sentimental proportions with this lovely duet between the will they or won't they gay besties. xmas is lovely when it's like this!]

rachel - merry christmas, darling
[flip side we get a kind of 'meh' track by lea michele. not my favorite off the glee xmas album, but i might fall off the wagon and cradle this song closer to xmas]

LIVE WONGIE: glee cast - don't stop believing (live @ x-factor)

glee cast - don't stop believing (live @ x-factor)
[performing the sectionals version of the song, the current cast (sans kurt) all flew over to the UK to do this crowd pleaser. poor chris colfer tweeted why he wasn't on stage with the rest of the cast "I won't be performing on the X-Factor with the other Gleeks! I had to stay and film scenes with the Warblers. Lot's of cool stuff coming up!" wonder if new character blaine will tour with these guys next year?]

Sunday, December 05, 2010

LIVE WONGIE: alexandra burke - the silence (live @ x-factor)

alexandra burke - the silence (live @ x-factor)
[it's official, alexandra is my favorite x-factor act of all the previous contestants. not only does she sing the shizz out of her songs, but the girl is by far the best PERFORMER of the lot! though this is a cheesy ballad, alexandra sells it so much that i got goosebumps (and the thing at the end!). genius!]

NEW VIDEOS: ke$ha - we r who we r

ke$ha - we r who we r
[want skank? here you go! as for the song, listen dr john can definitely write the hits, but do they HAVE to sound like his other tracks? (taio cruz' 'dynamite' anyone?) i'm not feeling this, but the song has already hit #1 so i'm obviously in the minority here. blergh.]
