WONGIE SILLY SONG OF THE WEEK: the lonely island feat nicki minaj - the creep

the lonely island feat nicki minaj - the creep
[oh this is just AWESOME! don't want to spoil anything, but i think a new dance movement has begun!]

POP BOY: jacob latimore feat diggy simmons - like em all

jacob latimore feat diggy simmons - like em all
[the need to pigeon hole pop acts have already made some bloggers call this boy the 'black justin bieber', which is just weird... so check out this fun young singer/actor (saw him last fall at toronto in the upcoming horror movie 'vanishing on 7th street') with his extremely catchy track now!]

NEW VIDEO!: tinie tempah feat ellie goulding - wonderman

tinie tempah feat ellie goulding - wonderman
[alot of work went into making this video, but maybe just a little bit of that effort should have gone into making my girl ellie a smidgen less matronly... just a smidgen!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: jessie j feat b.o.b. - price tag / jessie j feat devlin - price tag (live @ la scala) / (official remix)

i have been singing along to this song ever since jessie j performed it live on jools holland back in november. since then, the track has been a steady favorite everywhere i go, so the fact that it FINALLY gets a release this weekend makes me giddy like you can't believe. while we're at it, i've also thrown in an AWESOME live performance that jessie j did last week at la scala with her UK collaborator devlin AND the official non-radio rip of that remix itself. it's all about the jessie j today!

adele - promise this (cheryl cole cover)(live @ bbc live lounge)
[bet you never thought the cheryl cole song would sound THIS amazing! btw, billboard just published their cover story of adele this week, read the whole article here.]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: noah and the whale - l.i.f.e.g.o.e.s.o.n.

noah and the whale - l.i.f.e.g.o.e.s.o.n.
[my... someone has been listening to alot of tom petty! the british band release their 1st single from their forthcoming 33 mins long album 'last night on earth' and damn is it catchy. between the singalong spelling of the chorus and the country vocal harmonies, i am hooked!]

WONGIE HIP HOP SONG OF THE WEEK: nicki minaj feat drake - moment 4 life

nicki minaj feat drake - moment 4 life
[i've always felt that nicki has been amazing when she MC's on other people's tracks, but it took this song to show me that she can definitely shine on her own material. THIS is the tune that will bring her to a wider audience. wonderful!!! btw, what is up with new alter ego martha and her brit/aussie/darling talk? wacky]

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: sleigh bells - rill rill

sleigh bells - rill rill
[ok fine, i have 2 consecutive songs of the month, BUT rill rill has been a tried and tested track from sleigh bell's debut album that i've been blasting since last summer. it rocks and is probably one of the best songs for any road trip you'll take this year!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: savage skulls and douster feat robyn - bad gal

savage skulls and douster feat robyn - bad gal
[i've been jamming to this on my ipod since november of last year, but am SO happy that this quirky silly club song gets an official release! throw in the fact that my gal robyn brings in some swagger lyrics into the mix and well... just turn it up!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: lykke li - i follow rivers

lykke li - i follow rivers
[tipped this as the indie song of the week about a week and half ago, now here is the official music video for the dreamy poppy song. i LOVE the texture of the video, almost matte yet extremely lush at the same time, kudos to director tarik saleh!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: beth ditto - i wrote the book

beth ditto - i wrote the book
[gossip frontwoman goes solo for a dance project with simian mobile disco, the end result is an EP that i've been playing LOUD for the past week! LOVE this tune!!!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: magnetic man feat john legend - getting nowhere

magnetic man feat john legend - getting nowhere
[proof that the current dubstep sound has the ability to maturely fuse soulful gospel with some fly dark beats. love this hypnotic song!]

WONGIE DISCOVERY: funeral party - finale / nyc moves to the sound of la

[named nme's #47 best new bands of 2010, there's nothing like a fun rowdy post punk trio based in la, with a whole lotta swagger in the process! then again, LA is full of actors and fakers, so this could be an intricate art project. ok, maybe not...]

funeral party - finale

funeral party - nyc moves to the sound of la
[blasphemous claim in the song title, but this ny-er will forgive these boys due to the awesome use of cowbells in the track!]

WONGIE INDIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: two door cinema club - what you know

two door cinema club - what you know
[new single from one of my fave acts of last year! just upgraded to the A list on BBC radio 1, these boys are breaking 2011 in with style!]

POP GAL: alexis jordan - good girl

alexis jordan - good girl
[it's like listening to a teen nick / post virginal girl pop anthem. which is probably why this song TOTALLY appeals to the 15 year old girl in me!]

Sunday, January 23, 2011

POP BOY: ed drewett - blind / keep me in mind (demo)

while cutie patootie ed drewett continues to record new tracks for his upcoming debut album (he teased that he's trying out some stuff with starsmith on his twitter feed), 2 songs leaked out in the past few days which showcase a more 'sensitive' side to our cheeky boy. potential next singles for either one of them? you decide!

ed drewett - blind

ed drewett - keep me in mind (demo)
[love the way ed mugs at the camera while doing a really good performance of this song. cheeseball!]

WONGIE DIVA SONG OF THE WEEK: kyla la grange - walk through walls

kyla la grange - walk through walls
[oh my gosh, the amount of DRAMA put into this song is monumental! with arcade fire like instrumentation mixed in with kate bush like vocals (she quivers! she wails!), kyla is coming into the musical arena in full force. with clare maguire also storming into the forefront, it looks like 2011 is the year of drama divas! i am giddy!]

WONGIE GIRL BAND SONG OF THE WEEK: parade - louder

parade - louder
[i'm like a moth to a flame when it comes to girl bands, so when i read that there's a new one in the horizon named parade, i just had to give them a listen (and boy what a happy camper i am because of it!) using all the pop songwriting tricks in the book (group singalong chorus! funky electric boogaloo groove that shows up unexpectantly! retro 60's piano chords!), i can only look forward to more pop gems from this quintet (though can somebody fire the stylist cause really, 'more' isn't necessarily good!). welcome to the pop world ladies!]

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: pink - f**kin perfect

pink - f**kin perfect
[once again the creative collaboration between pink and director dave meyers bears the fruit of a strong music video for the masses. this time we go into the dark (autobiographical?) world of a girl gone wrong with a lovely twist of light at the end of the tunnel. i may have welled up for a second, but then again, i'm a softie! big up to actress tina majorino (veronica mars) for drawing us into this world!]

WONGIE ELECTRO POP SONG OF THE WEEK: mndr - cut me out

mndr - cut me out
[what a wonderful electro pop tune from the NYC duo! here's hoping that this means a proper full length will be coming out soon from them! OH and if you like this song, it's available for free yo! just click on the download button in the player box above!]

REEEMIX!: lady gaga - X (mugler remix) (born this way track)

lady gaga - X (mugler remix)(born this way track)
[as a gift to her friend and stylist nicola formichetti (and the new director of theirry mugler's label), gaga offered up an exclusive remix for his debut show. of course this also sets up the official teaser for gaga's own album 'born this way' and first single coming in a few weeks. can't wait!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: cold war kids - louder than ever

cold war kids - louder than ever (free mp3 @ RCRD LBL)
[i have always had a soft spot for the cold war kids. not only do i adore the vocals of lead singer nathan willet, but there has always been something really soulful about their sound. with the upcoming release of their album 'mine is yours', it looks like the CWK's are embarking on a fuller more produced sound, but still keeping the hooks that drew me to them in the first place. can't wait to hear the rest of the album!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: peter bjorn and john - breaker, breaker

peter bjorn and john - breaker, breaker
[this is 1'38" of pure joy by one of my favorite bands! it's as simple as that! if you like it as much as i do, go and grab the mp3 for free on their website!]

WONGIE INDIE SONGS OF THE WEEK: telekinesis - you turn clear in the sun / dirty thing / car crash

i've been tipped about this seattle based trio for quite some time now, but only just got around to paying it forward to you guys. led by singer/songwriter michael benjamin lerner, the sunny brightness of telekinesis isn't lost in the land of twee, instead his songs are indie infused with a hint of sentimental sadness throughout. it's a great mix and i look forward to hearing their upcoming album '12 desperate straight lines'. expect more posts about this band from now on!

telekinesis - you turn clear in the sun

telekinesis - dirty thing
[taken off their EP parallel seismic conspiracies from last year]

telekinesis - car crash
[like it? spin magazine is offering it for free!!]

NEW SHE & HIM!: she & him - don't look back

she & him - don't look back
[fans of the retro act can rejoice in new visual material!]

ADELE MOMENT: adele - interview (alan carr chatty man) / rolling in the deep (live @ alan carr chatty man)

adele - interview (alan carr chatty man)
[ok, if i didn't love her enough before, this interview just solidifies that we really kind of need to be BFF's cause the girl is loud and hilarious! plus she watches x-factor so what more could i want?]

adele - rolling in the deep (live @ alan carr chatty man)
[nothing to add here. she's just plain amazing each time.]

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: best coast - crazy for you

best coast - crazy for you
[indie act best coast continue their love of cats (just go to their facebook page to see what i mean) by creating a whole video featuring the feline critters! i'm a sucker for any cute vids with animals so really they had me at the opening paw shot!]

WONGIE NERD VIDEO OF THE WEEK: the limousines - very busy people

the limousines - very busy people
[all you design/graphic geeks are going to nerd out to this wonderful video directed by mathieu wothke for the san fran electro pop duo. nothing more to say really, but sit back and explode in binaries and bitmaps of glee!]

WONGIE GAY SONG OF THE WEEK: cher - you haven't seen the last of me (dave aude radio edit)

cher - you haven't seen the last of me (dave aude radio edit)
[after winning the golden globe for best original song of the year, cher celebrates another milestone by getting herself a #1 in six consecutive decades! all i want is to watch cher perform this at the oscars... fairy godmother, make it happen!!!]

WONGIE POP SONG(S) OF THE WEEK: eva & the heartmaker - signals / mr tokyo

eva & the heartmaker - signals
[need a bit of pure pop infusion? check out this duo from the lovely land of norway that lovingly crafts pop songs with nary a wink in sight. made up of norwegian idol winner eva weel skram and her husband thomas, the duo site the cardigans and blondie as influences (and definitely a source of hook material). 'signals' is their latest single which rocks the pop... AND the bridge! i just LOVE the bridge in this song! turn it up cause it's pop time!]

eva & the heartmaker - mr tokyo
[released back in the summer, this track isn't as strong as 'signals' but the admiration of 80's pop rules are definitely here (it even has the 'oriental' keyboard hooks!). my only suggestion is that eva stops bouncing around like a fool in future videos, cause it's kind of not cute...]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: fenech soler - demons

fenech soler - demons
[can't believe i didn't put this track up earlier, 'demons' has been playing on my ipod for a good 2 months now. it's the 4th single to be taken off their highly catchy self titled debut and hopefully it'll do the trick for some serious crossover success!]

Monday, January 17, 2011

INDIE DANCE BITCH DANCE: skream & example - shot yourself in the foot again

skream & example - shot yourself in the foot again
[ok first of all the guy in the video is a douche, so the fact that the girl FREAKS out throughout the video makes her a douche lover. of course there's a twist, but she's still a douche lover and should really know better... oh yeah, the song is pretty cool!]

WONGIE SURPRISE DANCE SONG OF THE WEEK: tiesto vs diplo feat busta rhymes - c'mon (catch em by surprise)

tiesto vs diplo feat busta rhymes - c'mon (catch em by surprise)
[nothing like the machine gun delivery of the amazing busta to throw into a club track! random but not bad!]

JESSIE J MOMENT: jessie j - who you are (live @ times square subway station) / mamma knows best (live @ home)

jessie j - who you are (live @ times square subway station)
[our voice of 2011 rips her way through a random performance at the times sq subway station. the audience looks like it's been filtered with ALOT of interns with cameras from the label, but she is amazing, so really, who cares!

want more? check out this performance of one of her album tracks 'mamma knows best' on the floor of her room. silly, but if she can sing like this sitting down, imagine what this will sound like at a live venue!]

jessie j - mamme knows best (live @ home)

ADELE MOMENT: adele - if it hadn't been for love (b-side) / someone like you (live @ home)

adele - if it hadn't been for love (steeldrivers cover)(rolling in the deep b-side)
[with adele's album on the cusp of release, check out her amazing rendition of the bluegrass band steeldrivers' 'if it hadn't been for love'. officially the b-side to 'rolling in the deep', this only whets the appetite for fans waiting to hear her new album.

want more? msn recently went to adele's home to hear her own personal breakdown of key tracks before performing the song. this is her explanation of the 2nd single 'someone like you' and as usual, she is amazing.]

clare maguire - the last dance
[this song is just pure DRAAAAAMA! shortlisted for BBC's sound of 2011, the young irish lass is set for big things this year just you wait!]

REEEMIX!: jessie j - do it like a dude (labrinth remix) / (jakwob remix)

[after yesterdays' awesome announcement that the BBC chose jessie j as their sound of 2011 (compiled by a group of music critics, broadcasters and bloggers), i figured i'd offer up 2 sweet remixes of her current single 'do it like a dude'. jessie was already a fave of ours last year, so we're just SO happy that she's getting the boost from the tastemakers of the industry! can't wait to see her performance at the Brit awards!]

jessie j - do it like a dude (labrinth remix)

jessie j - do it like a dude (jakwob remix)

WONGIE POP (DRUM N BASS) SONG OF THE WEEK: danny byrd feat netsky - tonight

danny byrd feat netsky - tonight
[this autotuned song is so cheesy and yet i just know that if i were graduating from high school and this played at my 2011 prom, i'd probably go apeshit mad and hug all my friends while jumping up and down. seriously, acts like the black eyed peas can go F themselves with their faux dance party "anthems", this cheese is the real celebratory deal that i'd like to get stoopid with!]

WONGIE 2011 BUZZ: modestep - feel good / f**k you (modestep remix)

modestep - feel good
[allegedly the only live dubstep band out at the moment, modestep do offer up a rockin good time with their music. definitely feeling these boys for one of the buzz acts of 2011!]

cee-lo - fuck you (modestep remix)
[cee lo gets a nice dubstep re-rub by the modestep boys. it's awesomely mad in the best way!]

WONGIE REMIX OF THE WEEK / LIVE WONGIE: adele - rolling in the deep (jamie xx shuffle) / (live @ largo)

adele - rolling in the deep (jamie xx shuffle)
[aw yeah, the 1st wonderful remix of the year falls upon my beloved adele tweaked by the equally favored jamie from the xx! it's a quirky funked up stomp and just the way 2011 should be!]

adele - rolling in the deep (live @ largo)
[while i'm at it, check out this lovely performance of adele at LA's largo performance space. as usual, amazing!]
