shabazz palaces - swerve
[oh my gosh, i was just going to say that this track reminded me of the 90's rap of the awesome digable planets and then i find out that shabazz frontman palaceer lazaro is also known as ishmael butler, aka ex lead rapper of DIGABLE PLANETS!!! leading the avant rap movement (that's what they're calling it), this track is definitely interesting in all the right places. totally digging this!]
gavin degraw - not over you
[nothing like the powerhouse vocals of gavin meeting perfect song crafter ryan tedder (one republic) for this piece of musical gem. it's been about 2 years since gavin has come out with new material, so it's very nice to see him return in such a big way, welcome back!]
the civil wars - npr music tiny desk concert
[joy williams and john paul white aka the civil wars, can make even a simple acoustic performance in the npr office sound amazing! i LOVE this duo!!!
their set list: "Barton Hollow" "Twenty Years"
"Poison & Wine"]
eminem - space bound
[hm... this kind of falls under the 'meh' section EVEN with the 'shocking' shooting that seems to be the only hook for this forgetful video (and personally, i think that showing a suicide is exploitative and irresponsible)... bleh]
david guetta feat nicki minaj and flo rida - where them girls at
[the song is total cheese, but it's nicki's all too quick verse that elevates this into something more than radio slush.]
cold war kids - skip the charades
[taken off their 'mine is yours' album, this track definitely sees the band expanding their sound into a more mainstreamed arena. nothing wrong with that, in fact i'm hoping it'll broaden their appeal into the success they truly deserve! btw, LOVE nathan willett's voice!]
lady antebellum - just a kiss
[how this isn't a theme song for a cheesy summer blockbuster is beyond me. this totally harks back to the days of the diane warren penned aerosmith/faith hill era. now this perfectly good song is wasted to JUST the top of the charts... BO-ring!]
bombay bicycle club - shuffle
[omg, these boys have been consistently putting out amazing melodious music for the past 2 years. 'shuffle' launches their upcoming 3rd album 'a different kind of fix' and based on this lovely track, it'll hopefully be awesome!]
2ne1 - i am the best
[the most catchy electro pop song you'll hear this week AND it's not even in english! korea's sassy 2ne1 ("21" get it?) show the popsters how it's done!]
britney spears - i wanna go
[playing a bit of catch up here as britney's latest video made it's premiere last week while i was on a work trip. it's kooky and she definitely has more energy than in her last video!]
bjork - crystalline
[strange first single off her upcoming biophilia album, bjork also begins her 2 week residency at the manchester international festival in which she will perform an installation featuring numbers from the album which will include multimedia, apps and the internet!]
easily one of the biggest performances of her career, beyonce went on the glastonbury main stage to headline (a woman hasn't headlined ever!) a confident frenzy whipping festival level concert. below are the highlights of her awesome gig!

[it's just that nasty groove that hooks me everytime. i'm such a hoochie deep down! fans of dev, prepare for the video for her upcoming single very very soon!]
ed sheeran is shocking the charts this week with his first official single from a major label battling it out for the top spot. at just 20 years, the singer/songwriter has been canvasing the pubs and even hip hop shows (which gives him this extra soulful edge seen below in the jools holland performance). but it's his acoustic ode to homeless youths which is clocking the sales this week, giving him a big boost in recognition after 4 years of trying to get signed. i'm a new fan and so should you!]
ed sheeran - wayfaring stranger (jamie woon cover) (live @ later with jools holland)
[i'm always a sucker for a live loop performer, throw in the fact that he manages to keep us transfixed for the full performance is testament to
ed sheeran - the a team (live @ later with jools holland)
boxes - throw your stones
[the UK's version of the postal service? might be too narrow of a comparison (since the song explodes into bombastic proportions midway), but there is something electro lo fi about this act. throw in the fact that man crush / x-factor UK host dermot o'leary is in this video makes it just a smidgen better!]
chris brown feat justin bieber - next to you
[it's the end of the world, lets dance! am i the only one who thinks this over produced video preposterous?!]
lady gaga - the edge of glory (video premiere)
[surprising fan expectation, gaga gives us a very simple one woman video for her soaring pop anthem. i love this song and was hoping for a more celebration of life visual, but this is what the haus of gaga has chosen ...oh well
UPDATE: clarence clemons, bruce springsteens' iconic sax collaborator who is featured in both the song and video, sadly passed today due complications from a stroke. our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.]

rye rye feat robyn - never will be mine
[sampling the classic robyn tune 'be mine', rye rye brings a mellow summer vibe to this melancholic rap tune. lets see if this collaboration will bring them both to mainstream attention, hope so!]
katy perry - last friday night (t.g.i.f.)
[katy takes on the wonderful new alias of kathy beth terry and offers up an epic 8 min marc klasfeld directed video of the best friday night john hughes inspired party ever! throw in cameos by glee's kevin mchale & darren criss, rebecca black, hanson, debbie gibson, corey haim AND kenny g and you've easily got the video of the week!]
the wanted - glad you came
[oh wow, the wanted go cheesy euro disco fit for ibiza and i LOVE it!!! definitely the best thing you'll never admit to bopping your head to this weekend!]
james blake - lindisfarne
[what a mesmerizing and creepy video by director martin de thurah. letting us in on a contagion pact/cult by a group of young kids, james blake is featured fleetingly in the video (which combines the music of lindisfarne I and II from his album) even though his aural presence is felt throughout. pretty awesome stuff here!]
patrick wolf - house
[taken from his upcoming album lupercalia, this joyful celebration offers up an awesome soundtrack for the weekend. happy friday everyone!]
shakira feat pitbull - rabiosa
[i like this song and all (plus she looks great pole dancing!)... but how is this different from her previous single 'loca'?]
katy b - easy please me
[we're onto the 4th single off of katy's debut album and though it's not as strong as her previous singles, there's something so compelling about everything she releases. if this version is too 'meh' for you, check out the hot remixes below by royal t and caspa, that might kick your day into gear!]
dionne bromfield - foolin
[damn is her voice amazing! with this strong 2nd single from her upcoming 'good for the soul' debut album, dionne is making her god mother amy winehouse proud!]
kings of leon - back down south
[i don't want to sound cynical, but the kings of leon boys look like they've gone so far into the hollywood-ized world of their success that a lovely down home song like this just sounds a tad disingenuous. i like the tune alot, so hopefully i'll just ignore my preconceived notions about these guys and enjoy the song...]
nathaniel rateliff - early spring till (live @ later with jools holland)
[the journey from small town missouri to singing on the BBC jools holland stage must be a surreal one for singer/songwriter nathaniel rateliff, but his year of touring incessantly and finding his fan base one performance at a time is reason to fall for this talented troubadour. just press play and let this beautiful raw and haunting song win you over. it is indeed special!]
calvin harris feat kelis - bounce
[a clever day in the life video (by directors vincent haycock and ag rojas) brings together kelis and calvin harris into the narrative of a las vegas loser. throw in the fact that the song is such a catchy stormer and you pretty much have one of the coolest things out at the moment. i'm a fan!]
pitbull feat neyo, afrojack and nayer - give me everything
[oh my gosh, this song is so cheesy that it's virtually perfect. i've been fighting it like the plague and well, it finally broke my defenses down. i'm a fan!]
the feeling - set my world on fire
[after a three year break, the feeling return with a breezy cheesy lovely pop ditty that makes for good sunday sunset soundtrack music. sometimes thats all you can ask for in a pop song!]
beverley knight - fairplay (soul II soul cover) (live @ later with jools holland)
[as usual beverley proves why she is one of the best vocalists in the UK. absolutely nailing one of the best songs off the soul II soul 'club classics vol 1' album, beverley went on jools holland last week and performed 3 songs off her upcoming 'soul UK' album. celebrating the british influences of beverley's youth, the collection features her renditions of Omar, Young Disciples, Jamiroquai and many more. i can't wait to hear the rest of the album!]
beverley knight - one more try (george michael cover) (live @ porchester hall)
[all i can say is F**K!!!!! she sings the SH*T out of this song! amazing! totally sweat inducing amazing!]
the vaccines - all in white (explicit)
[this is totally the kind of weird ass trippy video that mgmt would make and totally takes away from the strong song that it supposedly supports visually. BUT if you're into nudity, levitation and stuff burning up, this is your new favorite video!]
sam brookes - in weeks
[nothing like the beautiful voice of a 24 year old singer/songwriter to make your weekend soundtrack perfect. currently working on his debut album, sam is slowly crafting his live performances by doing some key gigs around the UK alongside scott matthews, cherry ghost and a tour with ray davies. check out the debut single 'in weeks' as it's gotten multiple plays due to it's mesmerizing and gentle ferocity... now if someone can please tell sam to NEVER shoot a video standing in front of a mirror all will be perfect!]
want to hear sam in all his live glory? here he is performing in the back of a...um...car. thank goodness he sounds amazing!
beirut - east harlem
[this has long been a favorite of mine from beirut's live sets and the fact that they're using this lovely track to launch the upcoming album really throws me into a land of giddy!]
nicola roberts - beat of my drum
[yeah... it was kind of better when there was no video... now it just looks like a girl throwing a party that no one wants to attend. maybe single #2 will be better? thanks to ali's blog for the video!]
coldplay - every teardrop is a waterfall
[i've kind of written off coldplay these past few years, but something so singalong and anthemic (even by these guys) deserves props. they're back!!]
apotheosis - o fortuna (apocalypse chorus mix)
[this was my anthem for the year of 1991! doc marten boots, orange hoodie (urban outfitter bought of course), dark dark jeans and a group of us rave clubbers stomping around like we were the coolest cats in boston. ah... youth!]
alexandra stan - mr saxobeat
[romania is in the house yo!!! this is the kind of euro trashy single that shouldn't be so much fun to listen to, but just is! all it makes me want to do is granny dance with a glass of champagne in my hand! brilliantly bad!]
nicola roberts - beat of my drum
[it's the go! team meets m.i.a. all filtered through the most washed down tweeny pop vocals thanks to ex-girls aloud member nicola roberts. it's kind of good and kind of bad at the same time (the good comes from producer diplo throwing all of his tricks into the bag) and the bad... well... i think someone with more sass could probably do this song serious justice. looking forward to mocking the video in a few days!]
bon iver - a song for you (donny hathaway) / i can't make you love me (bonnie raitt) (live @ late night with jimmy fallon)
[justin went on jimmy fallon last week to do his version of a mash up of donny hathaway meets bonnie riatt. the end result is simply beautiful!]
for those outside of the US, unfortunately you'll have to make do with the audio version which is below:
bon iver - a song for you (donny hathaway) / i can't make you love me (bonnie raitt) (live @ late night with jimmy fallon)
rihanna - man down
[it's definitely the most reggae-licious track riri has ever recorded, not my favorite (there's something missing in the authenticity of the reggae-ness that i can't put my finger on), but who knows, might grow on me in time. though i have to give love to the fact that she's returned to jamaica to shoot this video!]
robyn - call your girlfriend
[after taking a bit of a personal break, wongie returns just when my gal robyn returns with a brand new video for her lovely new single from her 'body talk' album! while you're at it, check out the hot remixes of the single below!]
