AUDIO BUZZ: the saturdays - my heart takes over

the saturdays - my heart takes over
[hm... this is kind of an ok 3rd single from the revamped disco divas of late. throw in the fact that the single cover has a weird same height uniformed look and it just reminds us how easily they can fall back into factory banality. sigh...]

WONGIE VIRAL PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: bernhoft - cmon talk / cmon talk (live @ ellen)

bernhoft - cmon talk
[i'm a sucker for anyone that loops tracks live when performing. perhaps it appeals to my music nerdism or the fact that this norwegian artist throws in alot of soul into the mix. love it!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE MONTH: young the giant - cough syrup

young the giant - cough syrup
[cali band young the giant definitely have their musical hooks down. i've been listening to this catchy number for the past month on my spotify playlist (i'm under wongie1 - subscribe yo!) and it definitely has turned into one of my favorite songs of the month! and it should be one of your faves this month too!]

AUDIO BUZZ: bruno mars - it will rain (theme from twilight : breaking dawn pt 1)

bruno mars - it will rain (theme from twilight : breaking dawn pt 1)
[an interesting collaboration since previous twilight tracks skewed more towards the indie music scene, bruno's contribution is definitely in the vein of his previous work but with major overproduction. i like it...?]

NEW GLORIA ESTEFAN!: gloria estefan - wepa

gloria estefan - wepa
[the song is hyper busy and borderline annoying, but the fact that it's the lovely gloria estefan and the brass section is sick makes this kooky meringue on speed track worth a listen (can you imagine what this sounds like live). um... wepa!]

gloria estefan feat pitbull - wepa (r3hab remix)
[check out this more radio friendly dance mix that takes all the brass out and basically makes it 'meh']

CATCH UP: beyonce - 1+1 / love on top (live @ 2011 mtv vma awards)

beyonce - 1+1
[after the visual misstep of her previous video, this is a glorious return to form. literally glistening, beyonce looks simply radiant and peaceful for this brilliant prince inspired ballad!]

beyonce - love on top (live @ 2011 mtv vma awards)
[if you haven't seen this performance last month, check out her rousing performance of this retro soul song (aka the song where she keeps on singing higher and higher!). trust me, it's frigging amazing!]

tony bennett and amy winehouse - body and soul
[amy's final recording and she sounded wonderful]

CATCH UP: leona lewis / avicii - collide

leona lewis / avicii - collide
[i don't really get this song, high energy and uplifting, yet leona sounds like she's being filtered through an autotune and the video is just mopey and sleepy (kind of like her general image). couldn't somebody shoot it in real time? if this is a comeback, they need to give it another reboot!]

speaking of which, before the song was released, there was a bit of a legal issue in which the producers of leona's track never got the rights to the piano hook. it was finally resolved with dj avicii getting equal billing on the track. here is the original (with vocals) which isn't half bad:

avicii - fade into darkness

CATCH UP: snow patrol - called out in the dark

snow patrol - called out in the dark
[i just love this brett simon directed video! featuring actors jack davenport and tara summers, i never knew how funny lead singer gary lightbody could be!]

WONGIE COUNTRY SONG OF THE WEEK: lady antebellum - we owned the night

lady antebellum - we owned the night
[easily my favorite track off their #1 selling album 'own the night'! simple, harmonious and sentimental and rousing at the same time. just perfect!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: the dodos - good

the dodos - good
[the amazing thing about this duo is that even though it seems that their music is random and chaotic, it's actually extremely whimsical and melodious. there is definitely a method to their madness and i love it!]

NEW VIDEO: professor green feat emeli sande - read all about it

professor green feat emeli sande - read all about it
[taking a cue from the eminem school of personal stories with a strong vocal hook, 28 year old professor green preps himself for the big leagues with this autobiographical number about his relationship with his late father. throw in the crisp vocals of emeli and you have yourselves a massive hit on your hands]

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: maverick sabre - i need

maverick sabre - i need
[i can't believe that we'll have to wait until january to get ahold of maverick sabre's debut album, cause he is definitely creating much love on my end especially with this brooding retro soul track. dig!]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE MONTH: kelly clarkson - mr know it all

kelly clarkson - mr know it all
[yaaay! kelly clarkson returns after an almost 2 year break (the #1 country duet doesn't count) with this sassy and fun instant pop smash. i have this image of blasting this song in a convertible with the top down, now who's gonna give this miss daisy a ride?]

want more? check out this live performance that kelly did over the weekend at the iheartradio music fest in vegas:

oh land - white nights
[cute video for a cute song!]

WONGIE SONG(s) OF THE MONTH: michael kiwanuka - i'm getting ready / tell me a tale

michael kiwanuka - i'm getting ready
[the kid is only 23 (!!!) years old and writing confident no frills music with a soulful approach. definitely one of my favorite voices for the fall!]

michael kiwanuka - tell me a tale
[going retro 60's soul, this just showcases another side to this brilliant singer. CANNOT wait to hear what else he has in store for us!]

as a special treat, check out michael performing i'm getting ready live:

michael kiwanuka - i'm getting ready (live version)

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: florence and the machine - shake it out

florence and the machine - shake it out
[just press play... nuff said!]

WONGIE DANCE SONG OF THE WEEK: yogi feat aya marar - follow u

yogi feat aya marar - follow u
[i just LOVE this song! with a dirty slow dub bass underlying this soulful anthem, listening to this is a cause for stank face and that's always a reason to love a song!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: delilah - go

delilah - go
[slowly building a name for herself collaborating with chase and status and wretch 32, singer/songwriter delilah showcases her solo abilities by cleverly fusing the classic chaka khan hit 'ain't nobody' with original material. the end result is a slow burn that just sizzles beneath the surface. brilliant!]

delilah - go (rak session)
[check out this wonderful live version of the song!]

delilah - go (da vinci remix)
[hot! i'm sure there will be LOADS more remixes to come, but this one is the best so far, especially with the wobbly bassline!]

VIDEO CATCH UP: jennifer lopez - papi

jennifer lopez - papi
[totally preposterous and one massive product placement ad, but i still watched it till the end. glad to see SYTYCD choreographers nappytabs working the moves and alum ade front and center in the group dance!]

WONGIE LOVES: 2ne1 - ugly / lonely (jap) / hate you / i am the best (jap) / can't nobody (eng)

kpop girl group 2ne1 are expanding their popular reach beyond korea these days releasing japanese versions of their hits and also working with will.i.am for an eventual US introduction. from a observer stand point, they are killing it with great songs that transcend the language barrier (though they'll have to tone it down just a smidgen for US auds). i can't stop watching these gals! below is a nice collection of the barrage of content they've pumped out these past few months:

2ne1 - ugly

2ne1 - lonely (japanese version)

2ne1 - hate you

2ne1 - i am the best (japanese version)

2ne1 - can't nobody (english version)

WONGIE LOVES: lana del rey - video games

lana del rey - video games
[oh she's a sultry minx this lana del rey...pouty lips + retro visuals = instant hipster cred. lets just hope this translates to other tracks on her debut album]

NEW BEIRUT!: beirut - santa fe

beirut - santa fe
[turns out they were bonnie and clyde (and fido) all along]

WONGIE INDIE DANCE SONG OF THE WEEK: joe goddard feat valentina - gabriel

joe goddard feat valentina - gabriel
[fans of hot chip will undoubtedly recognize band member joe goddard immediately. though the group is on a mini break, joe has not only launched a new label greco-roman (which features our last post totally enormous extinct dinosaurs on their roster), but also an EP featuring this amazing gem of a song. reminding me of the classic house tracks of my youth, this is definitely one of my fave dance songs of the moment!]

WONGIE INDIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: totally enormous extinct dinosaurs - garden

totally enormous extinct dinosaurs - garden
[dumb name, but great electro pop duet of the season! totally enormous extinct dinosaurs (aka TEED) is actually the alias of orlando higginbottom, a one stop shop of production/songwriting and vocals (except in this case). we dig!]

totally enormous extinct dinosaurs - trouble
[check out the official 1st US release single]

POP GALS: rd - got me burnin'

rd - got me burnin'
[with hints of a more urban sugababes meets tlc meets uk grime, rd (aka ruff diamondz) consists of MC chronz (the white one), martika (the long haired one) and troy (the short haired one). using the base hook of the classic house track 'burning' by MK, there's something really catchy yet ruff on the edges about these girls (perhaps street vibe?) which is probably why its hit my radar. check out some of their earlier tracks below]

rd - alrite stilll

rd - do it like me

IT'S LYRICAL: cher lloyd feat mike posner - with ur love (lyric video)

cher lloyd feat mike posner - with ur love (lyric video)
[definitely better than the previous swagger jagger track. wonder how much mike posner banked for his 10 second guest starring role?]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: the wanted - lightning

the wanted - lightning
[i cannot explain why these boys make me so giddy with every release. alot has to do with the fact that their songs are so damn catchy (and the pop structure of their songs are just so damn wonderful!)]

FIRST LISTEN: rihanna feat calvin harris - we found love

rihanna feat calvin harris - we found love
[just a radio rip, but the track is strong enough to bring a wonderful smile to accompany your fist pump!]
