kpop girl group 2ne1 are expanding their popular reach beyond korea these days releasing japanese versions of their hits and also working with will.i.am for an eventual US introduction. from a observer stand point, they are killing it with great songs that transcend the language barrier (though they'll have to tone it down just a smidgen for US auds). i can't stop watching these gals! below is a nice collection of the barrage of content they've pumped out these past few months:

for the past few weeks i've been meaning to share the following songs that have been swirling in my ears via the ipod. perfectly capturing my street/travel soundtrack and my mood for the fall, these 10 acts have broken through my playlist to be my favorite tunes of the moment.

hype wongie: flagrant fowl's new cd coming out this summer

brooklyn based dj's cousin cole and pocketknife have been making the waves in the local club scene as purveyors of the fun party. but since i'm a social incompetent, what introduced me to them was a number of lovely remixes that made the rounds of indie tracks with subtle beats mixed in.

recently the awesome indie dance blog discobelle have been trumpeting the most recent cousin cole party mix. but the cos himself sent me a note saying that his collaboration with pocketknife, called flagrant fowl, will be releasing a massive album of 17 to 18 entirely folk/acoustic/indie remixes called tambourine dream late this summer!

as a tease for that album, here are some remixes done by pocketknife that will be featured on it (i can't wait for the full length!):

hype wongie: project jenny, project jan

contrary to popular belief, there is no jenny, nor jan involved with the brooklyn electro pop duo project jenny, project jan. however, the band does include vocalist jeremy haines, instrumentalist sammy rubin and a bit of wacky pop sensibility thrown in.

formed in college, the duo cemented their collaboration when sammy became highly amused with jeremy's freestyling skills one (i'm assuming, drunken) evening. by late 2005, project jenny, project jan released their first self-titled EP and managed to get some buzz on the brooklyn music scene.

after working on their debut album for almost a year, it looks like the duo is ready to break through into a wider net of appreciation. check out their catchy first single from their august release xoxoxoxoxo

the chemical brothers have announced that they will be releasing their 6th studio album titled we are the night' (out june 19).


featuring an interesting array of guests (including the klaxons, willy mason and midlake), the first single "do it again" featuring ali love has just made the buzz playlist on bbc radio 1 and is poised to be a likely summer club anthem.

[with the as yet untitled album mostly finished, fans will finally be able to hear the highly anticipated follow up rachel's 2004 album happenstance. just based on the lush orchestration from the clip above it sounds like it'll be an experience. i can't wait! check out her myspace page to read about her feelings about finishing. it's pretty funny and wonderfully honest.]

i just took a look at the once myspace page and found out a load of goodies about this movie and it's upcoming preview tour.

hype wongie: once (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova aka: the swell season)

i have been reading about the irish film once for ages. a critical and fan favorite ever since it premiered at the sundance film festival in january, the story focuses around an irish busker (played by glen hansard, lead singer of the popular irish band the frames) and a czech pianist (played by his friend and sometime collaborator marketa irglova) who find common ground in music and eventually love.

the movie just opened in ireland this week and will make it's way to our US screens sometime in mid may.

i shared the trailer (see below) yesterday, but i'd love to pass on some more bits and pieces i've found since then (can you tell i'm a tad obsessed?).

though there isn't an official soundtrack of the album released yet, glen and marketa were actually commissioned to write a few songs last year for a czech film beauty in trouble. the sessions were so successful that they recorded a full album under the guise of the swell season. when filmmaker john carney was looking for music for his film, he not only chose three songs from the album, but asked glen and marketa to star in his film. pretty cool eh?
