what a difference a year makes. just a few months back, rihanna, a seemingly one hit wonder from barbados, hit the charts with her catchy dancehall inspired smash 'pon the replay'. the single was everywhere with the cute rihanna in tow.

fast foward less that a year later and def jam have decided to bank some star power into the rihanna project. with a new album, a more urban sound and a complete sexy makeover, rihanna vers 2006 will come out to be a smash.

[this is a nice revelation, rihanna can actually have... FUN! after the dark and moody previous releases (which i have to be honest, was TOO dark and moody, even for riri), this track feels like the sky just opened up. not only showcasing rihanna's barbadian heritage, the girl gets to dance (and she good at it!). throw in 80's visual references and you get the perfect bubble gum video of the moment!]

[FINALLY! the one song that stood out almost instantly when i listened to rihanna's album good girl gone bad has been released as a single. totally euro trashy and just shamelessly fun, this is definitely one of my favorite tracks of the year. as for the video (directed by rihanna herself), though she looks fabulous, her lack of dancing skills is even more painfullly obvious here (which is probably why 90% of the video is just rihanna looking sultry at the camera). yet another great dance tune lost in a crappy video! thanks to alis blog for the video tip]

premiering last night after their performance on the grammys, this is such a haunting ballad that breaks new ground for our lovely (naked!) riri. much credit has to go for the songwriting skills and beautiful duetting of mikky ekko, but this show really belongs to rihanna. directed by sophie muller, this is just lovely!

oof! talk about backfire... just when people were willing to overlook the rihanna incident for his strong collection of recent hits, chris brown and riri decided to cameo on each other's releases, giving off a very unfortunate subtext that it's ok with what went down 3 years ago. i'm definitely curious to see how their misguided choice will affect the releases (especially this one since it's such a solid pop gem)

[this song was already a big meta anthem with rihanna offering the close to home chorus to eminem's angry verses. throw in a hyper slick video directed by joseph kahn and then offer some serious stunt casting with megan fox and dominic monaghan (as versions of eminem and kim), and you've got a powerfully sad video that you can't stop looking at. brilliant!]

with his life seemingly changing overnight due to the inclusion of his beautiful song 'stay' on rihanna's latest album 'unapologetic', nashville singer/songwriter mikky ekko is now on the fast track to wider recognition with his own solo material. born john stephen sudduth, mikky is working on his debut album with the likes of paul ('rolling in the deep') epworth, dave sitek and clams casino. i can't wait!

[director melina matsoukas (beyonce, jlo) has really outdone herself this time. telling the story of a destructive relationship played by rihanna and boxer/model dudley o'shaughnessy, the intense no-holes barred video perfectly shows the melancholia of the song hidden among the dance beats. just brilliant!]

[whether you loved this song or not, there's no denying that 'umbrella' broke through all musical boundaries and became one of those songs that EVERYBODY could sing along to. featuring a kick ass thick drum loop (from apple's garageband program no less!) and unfortunate repetitive wordplay, rihanna really lucked out with this one (heck, her whole album is a minor miracle since she's not the best singer around). still... it's my pick for the best song of the year. i'll see you in 2008!]

after hinting about this last week, rihanna officially released the main theme song for the upcoming star trek film (the 13th!!) called 'sledgehammer'. the over the top production and vocals can only mean it's a sia and co. track. perhaps within the context of the credits, this song will be fun to listen to, but for now it's just ALOT.
