WONGIE RETRO SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: slow club - suffering you, suffering me

slow club - suffering you, suffering me
with their album 'complete surrender' coming out next week, the duo of rebecca taylor and charles watson (aka slow club) release the wonderfully classic soul anthem 'suffering you, suffering me' to the masses. it's an instantly catchy number that just calls for crossover success. i'm a fan (and the video is darn rocky-tastic too!)

WONGIE COUNTRY SONG OF THE WEEK: billie joe armstrong & norah jones - long time gone

billie joe armstrong & norah jones - long time gone
nothing like two great voices getting together for a side project (that was literally recorded in 9 days), covering classic country tunes from the everly brothers album 'songs our daddy taught us'. the ease of this retro gem is just dreamy and i can't wait to hear the rest of this collection!

WONGIE BALLAD OF THE WEEK: kelis - been given a morning

kelis - been given a morning
if this is the new direction of kelis as an artist, then i am ALL IN! what a wonderful mature musical turn for this oft under appreciated singer. brilliant!

WEEKEND SOUNDTRACK: mavis staples - i like the things about me

mavis staples - i like the things about me
written by her late father 'pop' when she was a member of the stapes singers, the 73 year old soul icon mavis staples revisits this personal song with the help of jeff tweedy (wilco) who also produced the album 'one true vine'. there's nothing like listening to these lived-in vocals on the weekend i tell you!

VIDEO PREMIERE!: justin timberlake feat jay z - suit & tie

justin timberlake feat jay z - suit & tie
directed by david fincher (who still proves that he can make the best glossy videos around), it's nice to see JT do his suave thing (especially when he dances! swoon!) the song is still cheese though...

VIDEO PREMIERE!: petula clark - cut copy me

]

petula clark - cut copy me
to coincide with an insane 70 years in the business (and her 80th bday!), petula clark has gone and recorded a batch of new songs and covers for her upcoming 'lost in you' album. what's interesting is that the lead single 'cut copy me' is surprisingly haunting folktronica (and from the EPK below, is pretty much the sound of the album). it's definitely intriguing.

WONGIE XMAS: bing crosby & david bowie - the little drummer boy / peace on earth

bing crosby & david bowie - the little drummer boy / peace on earth
[maybe it's the xmas season and i'm getting incredibly sentimental in my older age, but this is such a lovely touching xmas performance (especially since bing passed a month later after this recording). it's easily one of my all time favorite xmas performances and i thought it fitting to offer it today. hug a loved one this weekend! happy xmas!]

RIP: malcolm mclaren - madame butterfly

malcolm mclaren - madame butterfly
[my ALL time favorite malcolm mclaren song EVER! still brilliant after all these years!]

CLASSIC HOUSE TUNE: lil louis - club lonely

lil louis - club lonely
[just thought i'd offer up a piece of classic house from the early 90's. a simple yet totally internal 8 mins of house heartbreak. genius!]

SEMINAL SONGS FOR WONGIE: the smiths - there is a light that never goes out

the smiths - there is a light that never goes out
[part of my bday week, i'm letting you get a glimpse of the music that influenced wongie. enjoy!]
