CATCH UP: leona lewis / avicii - collide

[i don't really get this song, high energy and uplifting, yet leona sounds like she's being filtered through an autotune and the video is just mopey and sleepy (kind of like her general image). couldn't somebody shoot it in real time? if this is a comeback, they need to give it another reboot!]
speaking of which, before the song was released, there was a bit of a legal issue in which the producers of leona's track never got the rights to the piano hook. it was finally resolved with dj avicii getting equal billing on the track. here is the original (with vocals) which isn't half bad:

[oh yes, i listen to jesse mccartney. actually it's this totally catchy song that has me singing along to it on a daily basis. the fact that it's a jesse mccartney tune is kind of an unfortunate reality, but i'm not a perfect pop song hater! upon doing some research, this song is actually co-written by the dream ("umbrella") which is probably why it grabs you so instantly. oh and two other reasons why i'm thawing on jesse, first, he co-wrote "bleeding love" and secondly, um... this video is borderline kiddie porn! (that's a pretty ballsy image makeover if you ask me)]

[i had ALOT of hope that with the magic touch of clive davis at the helm, the debut release of xfactor winner leona lewis would be one of the better diva albums of the year. unfortunately that wasn't the case. but lucky for the talented bland girl, her 1st single continues to prove that a great song can really build a career. oh well... onto the next diva in waiting for 2008.]

if you haven't figured it out by now, i give equal adoration to straight up pop as much as i do indie and other sounds. who cares if the cool factor is low in your books, i love pop! now check out three examples of good ditty's out at the moment that you'll be secretly singing in your shower for the next month.

[last years x-factor winner gets a proper single release with the blessing of clive davis and sassy pants perez hilton. written by ryan tedder of one republic (see belew), the debut album spirit features collaborations with ne-yo, dallas austin and even jimmy jam and terry lewis. i simply LOVE this 1st single in it's simplicity and way too catchy chorus (though the video is a bit 'meh'). let the leona pop onslaught begin!]

[oh no, you're not seeing things, our fave french canadian diva makes a return to the charts with her first english release since 2003 (helps that she's been sitting pretty at ceasars palace that whole time). the first single off the album of the same name is a dave stewart / kara dioguardi co-penned track that is actually very subtle and awesome! the video makes no sense whatsoever, but dave stewart does make a nice cameo in the end.]

damien leith - night of my life
[30 year old aussie idol winner was actually a chemist before joining this years contest. but what brought him to the winning line was his sensitive rock voice thats clearly represented in this release. for a 1st single, this is a pretty good song. final word: listened to this song three times. i think he just found a fan]
taylor hicks - the runaround
[ok, there's nothing wrong with having a michael mcdonald for this generation, and there's nothing wrong with a guy looking like he's already 40. but the tight jeans with the bulge need to go...no really! final word: surprising, kind of like his win]

[ok, i know, she's an x-factor winner, but since idol doesn't exist in the uk anymore, this is the equivalent. leave it to simon (yes, the same one) to choose this horribly cheesy cover as her 1st single. leona is much better than this, luckily she's talented enough to rise above it all and well... the song isn't that bad when she sings it. ugh! final words: fave idol of the bunch, crap song.]
eva avila - i owe it all to you
[canada's winner is a half quebeqois/half portugese sassy gal. going the pop teen route, this song is not bad either. final words: not offensive, not life changing]
