iron & wine - flightless bird, american mouth (wedding version) (twilight:breaking dawn part 1 soundtrack)
[goosebumps!!! pure goosebumps!!! swoon, smile then goosebumps again!!! iron & wine retools this now classic for the upcoming twilight : breaking dawn part 1 soundtrack and it's a lush one. featuring marketa irglova on harmonies, just press play and get, well... goosebumps!!!!]
4play presents - totally enormous extinct dinosaurs
[after falling in love with the song 'garden' last month, little was still known about orlando higginbottom's alias. thank goodnesschannel 4 commissioned this mini doc about this talented young man (with some previews of his upcoming debut)!]
little big town - moves like jagger (maroon 5 cover) (scattered, smothered & covered)
[the LBC offer up another delicious cover of a popular hit! i swear they do their 4 part harmonies with too much ease!]
katie herzig - free my mind (rac remix)
[the ever awesome remix artist collective offer up a lush strings infused rework of katie herzig's happy track. we were late on discovering katie early this month, so it's super cool to see that RAC has been fans for awhile now! oh and if you like what you hear, the mp3 is free for download above!]
lana del rey - blue jeans (penguin prison remix)
[cutie patootie penguin prison remixes lana del rey's catchy single with a classy 80's disco soul groove to wonderful effect! like what you hear? pick it up for free here! isn't it the best saturday ever?]
unicorn kid feat talk to animals - true love fantasy
[nothing like a wonderfully catchy TOTAL 90's rave throwback track to get your weekend going! at only 19 years old, oliver sabin (aka unicorn kid) is not only unabashed about his kiddie pop style, but also getting on the hype lists by respectable influential dj's throughout the UK. don't be a hater... just grab a glo-stick and dance!]
i'm telling you, there's nothing like discovering a wacky belgian eclectic string based quintet with lo-fi arcade fire meets pixies leanings! school is cool has found their rapidly growing fanbase via festivals, strong word of mouth and #1's on alt radio stations. the buzz is hopefully moving outside their geographical jurisdiction soon (cause i kind of love them!)
check out some of their wonderful music examples below:
school is cool - the world is going to end tonight (live @ studio brussel)
[this is just lively and amazing! definitely the song that instantly got my attention!]
school is cool - in want of something
[videos with a twist seem to be their de rigueur and this one definitely does the trick. they are twisted these kids!]
school is cool - new kids in town
[what a sick video! another reason why these guys are interesting]
beyonce feat j cole - party
[B brings brings some hipster glamour to the trailer park set! not my fave song off the '4' collection, but i do like the inclusion of cutie pie j cole into the mix. oh and check out the cameos by sister solange and buddy kelly rowland!]
example - midnight run
[4th (!!!) single taken off example's highly successful 'playing in the shadows' album. to be honest, this track does nothing for me, but hopefully his fans will go mad for it!]
willy moon - i wanna be your man
[how f**king cool is this song (and guy for that matter)? not yet 21, this londoner, by way of new zealand, is definitely creating some buzz with his retro rockabilly filtered through bass kicking 2011 swagger. the two diverse eras sound surprisingly perfect together and therefore falls under the awesome category! press play NOW!]
weeknd - initiation
[what is this? futuristic neo soul vocally tweaked with a dark erratic bassline to confuse and confound at the same time? throw in the fact that weeknd (aka abel tesfaye) is actually a canadian channeling some serious UK and it all just goes over my head. i'm definitely interested!]
feist - undiscovered first (live @ black cab sessions)
[check out this awesome (and crowded) one take performance of the song 'undiscovered first' from feists' latest album 'metals'. as always, she is amazing!]
nothing like a chipper norwegian 6 piece with diverse musical ambitions, singalong choruses and a rousing spirit that's engaging and addictive! with only an EP under their belt, the band are on the verge of releasing their debut album, 'to the treetops' with interesting results. check out my fave songs from their upcoming collection!
team me - dear sister
[this song was actually in my ipod for months with no labeling, so thanks to my gal philippa for giving me a name to my subway jam!]
team me - with my hands covering both of my eyes i am too scared to have a look at you now (live @ lydverket)
[ok, this is one of the most obnoxious titles, but thankfully a wonderful song!]
in a sea of husky voiced troubadour lasses, it's refreshing to experience a left of center falsetto loving folkster with a sprinkle of hipster. though she looks like a pixie chick, there's something extremely commanding once beth opens her mouth to sing. fascinating...
panic! at the disco - let's kill tonight
[what a fun song! part 80's footloose tribute, part casio explosion, part gothic cathedral session all blended with the spirit of emo stadium rock (and the strings playing underneath... genius). i keep on being surprised by this band and this song is no exception!]
martin solveig & dragonette feat idoling!!! - big in japan
[though this new track sounds exactly like 'hello' pt 2 (see below), it still has the bop around glee that makes people wanna dance around like happy fools. featuring the 16 plus girl band idoling!!! in the background, they just add to the pogo-ness of the song. now dance!!]
martin solveig feat dragonette - hello
[for comparisons sake]
will young - come on
[as usual, will young offers up a smart savvy video to accompany his music. though will has somehow managed to sustain a long career with his less than stellar vocals, alot of his success has to do with his visuals and the nice factor that this young man possesses. check out the cute video now, you will awwwww your way through the rest of the day!]
dum dum girls - bedroom girls
[oh how wonderful is this? harping back to a bygone era of cool girl band a la the go-go's or early bangles (i'm sure the dum dum girls would rather be compared to the ronettes or blondie), this is just a catchy slice of retro indie pop to make your week start perfectly!]
wu lyf - we bros
[there is something so wonderful about wu lyf's mission statement: "WU LYF is nothing, four dumb kids calling out heavy longings for a place to call home, two brothers greet two brothers and play heavy pop. I don't feel at home in this place, like your hearts drunk on kerosene and all you need is a spark." AND spark they do as they offer up this anthemic singalong that just rouses the spirits. absolutely brilliant!]
