[already the 4th single off the arctic monkeys' 'suck it and see album', i'm definitely feeling this is their catchiest most crossover track from the album (and since i'm such a pophead, it's a good thing for my simple tastes!). i always love the band when alex turner offers his cabaret vocals, throw in the retroness of the track itself and you've got our fave indie single of the week! huzzah!]

[the epic strings and giddy-up western grooves is the 1st single off alex turner (from Arctic Monkeys) and miles kane's (from The Rascals) side project the last shadow puppets. a definite nod to their musical influences, the single is a pre-cursor to their debut album the age of the understatement. personally, this looks to be on the top of my indie releases for april. can't wait!]

[ooh it's the clowns vs the thugs! definitely one of my fave songs off of their favorite worst nightmare album. directed by richard ayoade (the star of the uk and us IT crowd), the video brings back actor stephen graham (this is england/snatch) with the arctic monkeys (he was also the 'scummy man' in the "when the sun goes down" video).]

[speaking of which, i found this trailer of scummy man for you guys. commisioned by domino and warp records, a 2 part 30 minute short film was shot inspired by the song "when the sun goes down". as i mentioned, it stars stephen graham as a nasty pimp. looks really good!]

[i'm slowly beginning to LOVE this band with every listen of their debut album costello music. the fact that the hilarious film hot fuzz (starring my unofficial boyfriend simon pegg) has used this song as their theme makes me love the guys even more!]

[is this guy really as amazing as the hype around him? i'm not so sure, but the retro love in this song makes me tolerate him for now.]

rhythms del mundo (feat arctic monkeys, coldplay, franz ferdinand, u2 and then some)

with an impressive lineup of collaborations, the rhythms del mundo: cuba project has the legendary buena vista social club re-recording and sometimes performing with a diverse array of acts that include u2, sting, franz ferdinand, coldplay and the arctic monkeys.

all proceeds go to Artists Project Earth (APE), a non-profit organization that offers disaster relief via music based projects. this album seems like a wonderful place to start.

i've been feeling kind of guilty for my lack of posts here and i thought i'd ease my conscience with a batch of covers done by some unexpected performers.

i'm actually a big fan of cover versions only because when it's done right, you get to see a side of an artist that they may not be able to express through their own music. i'm also a big fan of the mashing up of genres (hip hop sung by an indie band, folk by a heavy metal posse etc...).

besides the blogs, another great place to find these covers is at jo whiley (which is where i found alot of these). here are a few of my faves of the moment:
