drake - in my feelings
i'm actually really surprised that drake went and made a video for his #1 viral smash 'in my feelings'. with twitter/instagram filled with videos of the dance challenge, the song went from album track to crossover hit instantly and could have been left at just a collection made by fans of the song. instead, drake did the classy thing (again) with director karena evans by bringing on dj/comedian shiggy (who did the dance in the first place), featuring yung miami of the city girls (jt is currently serving a sentence) and even celebrating big freedia who helped nudge his 'nice for what' into a smash hit. plus we get to see drake do some acting with phylicia rashad and la la anthony! all in all it's a celebration and we love him for it!

released just as donald glover went on SNL to be both the host and musical guest, childish gambino's new single (which he also world premiered that night) tackles gun violence and police brutality with the kind of surprise randomness situated next to dancing and celebratory singing. it's shocking to see, but just the kind of video you expect from this creative genius that's having a stellar year both in front and behind the camera.

i have to be honest, i totally misunderstood the intention of 'the weekend' when i first heard the song. rather than a woe is me being a side-piece jam, it's actually an... 'ok fine, i get him on the weekends, but i get the rest of the week to myself' anthem instead. to be honest, a fine lady like sza should have no problems getting a guy 100% of the time, but it probably wouldn't generate a number as good as this one. oh and the sparse video is directed by solange!

the acoustic loop playing below sza freestyle vocals is easily one of the highlights of her acclaimed debut album 'ctrl'. when the drums kick in at the end it's like we are officially in total celebration of her thoughts and it's kind of genius. no wonder people have been buzzing about this talented voice for the past year. i'm a late-comer but damn i sure enjoy the discovery!

ALL ABOUT KEHLANI: kehlani - touch / calvin harris feat kehlani & lil yachty - faking it / honey
what's kind of amazing about the 22 year old kehlani is that she pretty much showed up like a full fledged boss artist with a look and sound that doesn't give off any whiff of newbie/one to watch status. the problem is that her songs so far haven't even come close to that presentation, which is probably why alot of people still haven't discovered this young talent yet. hopefully these two new releases will kick up her recognition factor. first up buzz track 'touch' is an electro-fied pop number that is catchy as! we back that up with the latest single off calvin harris' 'funk wave bounces vol 1' (and an album highlight) with kehlani as the main vocalist. you get the idea of her talents here and hopefully in the coming year we will be hearing ALOT of big things from this girl.

there are two jessie j's out there, one that is super self aware of her talents and looks and therefore an artist that feels like she's trying way too hard. then every now and then, you get to see the jessie j that's raw and open and trying to tap into her honesty. with the release of her new single 'not my ex' there are more glimpses of the latter here that i haven't seen in awhile. when it works it's kind of chill inducing and i got me some chills watching this. please stay in this lane ms jessie!
