mutya keisha siobhan - flatline
yeah it's a GREAT day for music! the original sugababes mutya keisha and siobhan officially release their 1st single and it's frigging amazing. starting off with a simple guitar riff and jittery beats before turning into an epic ballad of cliffside wind blowing proportions (thank you producer dev hynes who also penned the amazing "losing you" by solange), what matters is that the trio's harmonies are front and center throughout. it's brilliant and easily one of the best songs of the summer. there i've said it!

sugababes - denial [link 2] [it's kind of crazy how desperate the music industry is these days. in the case of sugababes, the mediocre success of their 2nd single 'change' (which was only released three weeks ago) led to the quick release of their more upbeat single 'denial'. the song itself is simple and playful, but the video is OTT on fabulousness! i'm lukewarm with this track, but the video is another thing!]

though the following acts have produced underwhelming content (whether musically or visually), i want it on record that i'm actually a fan and just want them to do better!

alicia keys - no one [link 2] [it actually took this performance above that convinced me how much i really liked this song. this also proves that alicia is a far better live artist than a video one.
kanye west feat t-pain - good life [link 2] [how commercial does it have to get? well in the case of kanye, bringing the lame vocoder stylings of hitmaker t-pain is the ingredient for success. am i the only person not into his latest album graduation?]
nicole scherzinger feat will.i.am - baby love [link 2] [simplistic melody, middle of the road sentiments, do YOU think head pussycat doll nicole scherzinger is doing a good job of going solo? this video just makes me want to go to the beach, NOT listen to the song. all i can say is release the neyo penned 'sway' already.]
taio cruz - moving on [link 2] [trying so hard to be the 'next' neyo, uk artist taio cruz has shamelessly released two tracks that sound like tossed aside demos of the 'ney-ster'. how do you spell bland? apparent with a 't' and ending in an 'o'.]
sugababes - about you now [link 2] [how shiteous can a video be? the yellow outfits, the lame guy jumping over everything, the mediocre pop song. where is the edge that we loved about this group? bring them back!]
sugababes - overload [has it been almost 8 years for this still catchy song? i can still remember hearing it during a week long trip to london and was just obsessed with this track. much has to do with the nonchalant vocals and 'don't mess with us' image of these girls (in my mind still the best incarnation of the group). with siobhan and mutya both releasing solo albums, i thought i'd put this track out there to remind you of their alt-r&b roots]
mutya - real girl [i've been dying to hear this ever since popjustice raved about this song a week ago! sampling lenny kravitz 'it ain't over till it's over', mutya proves that there is life after the sugababes (and apparently beef too). with siobhan donaghy and her both releasing strong upcoming albums, i wonder what the remaining girls are going to do without their most talented vocalists?]
sugababes vs girls aloud - walk this way [as part of the UK comic relief charity red nose day, mega girl bands (all my favorites!) girls aloud and sugababes have collaborated for the 1st time on the classic aerosmith/run dmc track "walk this way". leading up to the march 17th live event will be a bunch of programs on television including a celebrity version of fame academy, the uk apprentice and also an episode of casualty written by my favorite screenwriter richard curtis. thanks to popjustice for the video heads up!]

i've been feeling kind of guilty for my lack of posts here and i thought i'd ease my conscience with a batch of covers done by some unexpected performers.
i'm actually a big fan of cover versions only because when it's done right, you get to see a side of an artist that they may not be able to express through their own music. i'm also a big fan of the mashing up of genres (hip hop sung by an indie band, folk by a heavy metal posse etc...).
