[there's always something peaceful and poignant when i hear modern bluegrass (especially when a female voice is involved). with a fine line from being folk music, acts like gillian welch and alison krauss constantly enter my playlist with high regard. now i can add NYC based dawn landes into my mix. i've only heard a few tracks from her album fireproof, but what i have heard is just lush. twilight reminds me of something you would hear at a modern day last chance saloon (ironic that the video is set in a beauty parlour). sigh...]

[working with hot UK producers xenomania (sugababes/girls aloud AND upcoming 2008 projects by annie/franz ferdinand), aussie born uk based gabriella cilmi is quickly being hailed at amy winehouse-lite. not sure if that's fair or accurate, but there is something interesting about her voice. hopefully her debut album will produce some better tunes other than this catchy, yet 'bleh', 1st single.]

[there's nothing more interesting than to see one of your favorite acts of 2007 get overexposed by a simple apple nano ad campaign, but then again, to see feist make the top 10 of the billboard pop charts as a result is also kind of cool. there's also the fact that this video is my favorite of the year and gosh how i wish i was one of the dancers!]

hot indie blog favorites. i just dig how this song is kind of funky and soulful at the same time. there's no album from these guys yet, but i'll keep you posted when i find out.

the album awoo doesn't come out until sept 19th, but anything by this band (even a video) is worth going a little bit crazy for. i just adore this group (though if you've never heard of them before, this 1st single from the 3rd album isn't the best representation of their work) and can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

this has been an amazing music year so far with new stuff coming at me daily (much that i've shared back to you). but amoung the batch, a few acts have filtered through and kept on returning to my personal playlists.

[hardcore fans of french musical theatre probably knew yael naim as miriam in the ten commandments, but for many of us, we discovered her feist-like vocals via the macbook air ad that premiered today. born in paris and raised primarily in isreal, the singer songwriter has found serious success in france with her self titled album which features yael singing in english, french and her native tongue. international success is definitely on the way with her easy on the ears soft and acoustic sound. as a bonus, lemme offer up yael's creepy drunken sounding rendition of britney spears "toxic". it's a hoot!]

hype wongie: flagrant fowl's new cd coming out this summer

brooklyn based dj's cousin cole and pocketknife have been making the waves in the local club scene as purveyors of the fun party. but since i'm a social incompetent, what introduced me to them was a number of lovely remixes that made the rounds of indie tracks with subtle beats mixed in.

recently the awesome indie dance blog discobelle have been trumpeting the most recent cousin cole party mix. but the cos himself sent me a note saying that his collaboration with pocketknife, called flagrant fowl, will be releasing a massive album of 17 to 18 entirely folk/acoustic/indie remixes called tambourine dream late this summer!

as a tease for that album, here are some remixes done by pocketknife that will be featured on it (i can't wait for the full length!):

After the recent release of her new single and video clip, ‘The Way You Are’, which is making radio waves around the country, Kate Vigo is making a name for herself in the music scene. With a sound that sits astride eclectic pop and stylized 60s rock, Kate is joined by amazing ensemble musicians known as ‘The Underground Orchestra’.

The fast rising vocalist came into the limelight as highest album selling performer of the 2008 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival. Whilst her jazz foundations have served her well, she has now changed her sound to embody an eclectic mixture of sounds, from pop rock to subtle acoustic refrains teamed with programmed loops, intricate melodies, Kate’s trademark soulful voice and 60's girl band influence.

Kate finished a degree in fashion design before undertaking a bachelor in voice improvisation at The VCA and, while worlds apart, parallels can be found in Kate’s music and her love of fashion. Weaving together a distinct array of sounds, from Billie Holiday to Feist, by way of Prince and Aretha Franklin, Kate’s eclectic mix of influences create a foundation on which she builds her distinctive, yet accessible, compositions.

‘The Way You Are’ is the first singlefrom Kate’s upcoming album which she is working on in collaboration with Damien Charles, also producer of ‘The Red Eyes’.

In Kate’s home city of Melbourne you can catch her and the The Underground Orchestra in premier original music venues such as The Northcote Social Club, The Toff in Town, The Empress, 303 and Manchester Lane.]
