katy perry feat kanye west - e.t.
[this is a makeup artists wet dream project! just watching katy get all alien-ed out is fascinating to stare at. smart move on getting Floria Sigusmondi as director since she is such a visual genius!]

CONCERT THURSDAYS: lisa hannigan and richard hawley - hushabye mountain / moon river (other voices 2011)

the rte live music series other voices not only celebrates it's 7th season mixing up current buzz bands with the best of what ireland has to offer. lisa hannigan is one act that benefited from one voices' patronage back when she was a newbie on the scene and now she returns with two songs (backed by richard hawley) that showcase why she is so loved by her fans. le sigh...

mona - listen to your love (2011 version)
[we called this our indie song of the week a few weeks back and now with a brand spanking new official video, we want to revisit our love for this track!]

INDIE WEDNESDAYS: wavves - king of the beach

wavves - king of the beach
[east coasters, let the surf anthem sweep all over you cause the winter WILL end soon... and when it does, we will blast this hot tune til we are sick of it!]

INDIE WEDNESDAYS: the dodos - black night

the dodos - black night
[one of my fave bands of the past few years return with a new album 'no color' and a placement in the billboard top 100 albums chart! one of the highlights of sxsw 2011, the band are currently touring the US and will step across the pond soon afterwards. definitely a great live act to check out if they come to your city!]

SOUNDTRACK TRACK: taio cruz - telling the world (rio soundtrack)

taio cruz - telling the world (rio soundtrack)
[it's a totally pleasant animated film track that hits all the right notes for a cheesy pop song! i'm a fool for pop, so this is pretty darn cool!]

LIVE WONGIE: britney spears - hold it against me / big fat bass / till the world ends (live femme fatale mini concert @ GMA)

britney spears pre-taped a mini-showcase concert from san francisco for good morning america this morning. performing tracks from her latest album 'femme fatale', we finally got to see a clear version of this performance (fan footage went viral from her vegas showcase a few days back) and it's pretty dire. ms. spears dances like she just learned the choreography a few days back (she's counting her steps in her mind!) and there is little to no energy throughout. thank goodness the awesome dancers and sets are there to distract! decide for yourself, check out all three performances below:

britney spears - hold it against me (live @ gma)

britney spears - big fat bass (live @ gma)

britney spears - till the world ends (live @ gma)

DANCE BITCH DANCE: chris brown feat benny benassi - beautiful people

chris brown feat benny benassi - beautiful people
[to me this sounds more like a benny benassi track featuring chris brown, but i'm not a stickler for logistics. in light of his current trashing drama last week, chris brown needs as much happy lifestyle visuals as he can get. and what better way than to show CB with all his celebrity friends (jamming to a club song no less!).]

REEEMIX: lady gaga - born this way (the country road version)

lady gaga - born this way (the country road version)
[here's a more country rock take on gaga's current hit!]

while you're at it, check out this surprise performance of gaga at las vegas' krave club a few days back, the guy shooting the video is FREAKING OUT! which is probably why it's all the more entertaining!

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: tv on the radio - will do

tv on the radio - will do
[taken off their upcoming 'nine types of light' album, this heartbreaking video (featuring parenthood star joy bryant) was released just days after the announcement that bassist gerard smith was diagnosed with lung cancer. our thoughts go out to him and his family.]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: friendly fires - live those days tonight

friendly fires - live those days tonight
[oh my gosh, how wonderful is this track? taken off their paul epworth produced album 'pala', the new track combines the afro brazilian beats that friendly fire love so much and throw in a dynamic catchy melody in the process (they even have a vocal round as a bridge!!!). amazing!]

WONGIE FOLK SONG OF THE WEEK: iron and wine - tree by the river (live)

iron and wine - tree by the river (live)
[sam beam is a god and his voice is like butta... can you tell i'm a fan? throw in the fact that he has one of the most genuine smiles when he sings and well, can you fault me for making him our folk song of the week?]

like what you hear? check out the studio version for FREE as an official download!

FOLK FRIDAYS: dry the river - new ceremony / bible belt (live @ watchlistentell)

buzzed for the past few months as another folk act that'll break into the mainstream in 2011, dry the river is made of norwegian peter liddle (he with the vibrato voice), punk rock drummer jon warren (he was once homeless!) and a tag of other members who create harmonies, string arrangements and all around band to watch skills. the impression is not immediate as mumford and sons were, but there is something interesting to want to hear more in the coming months.

dry the river - new ceremony

wanna hear them sing live, check out this lush performance below:

dry the river - bible belt (live @ watchlistentell)

FOLK FRIDAYS: admiral fallow - squealing pigs

admiral fallow - squealing pigs
[already released last year in scotland, the debut album, 'boots met my face', by the admiral fallow is getting a relaunch for UK audiences and beyond. their power folk sound is already getting them labelled as the new 'mumford and sons', but i'm hearing more of 'deacon blue' instead (and really aging myself in the process). they've intrigued me for sure and i can't wait to hear more of their album soon!]

Thursday, March 24, 2011

WONGIE COUNTRY SONG OF THE WEEK: the secret sisters - tennessee me

the secret sisters - tennessee me
[the vintage country duo the secret sisters evoke such an authentic retro sound that influential artists t bone burnett and jack white have already offered their stamp of approval. i'm such a fool for this kind of bygone era country music and hopefully you are too!]

NEW BAND PERRY!: the band perry - you lie

the band perry - you lie
[my fave americana gothic country trio (well, this is my description of them), the band perry, return with their latest single "you lie" and this time, lead singer kimberly perry has been wronged (and her strong vocals prove it)! if you like your country music drama, then just press play!]

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

INDIE WEDNESDAYS: young knives - love my name

young knives - love my name
[with their last effort released in 2008, the young knives are back with a catchy re-introduction (and what sounds like a hint of soul added to the musical mix). hopefully the rest of their new album 'ornaments from the silver arcade' will be just as diverse as what we hear in this 1st single!]

WONGIE INDIE DANCE SONG(s) OF THE WEEK: friends electric - golden blood / something you should know

friends electric - golden blood
[nothing like a good solid dance influenced indie song to make you bop around for the day! UK quartet, friends electic, got buzzed by the likes of frankmuzik and ellie goulding when they remixed a few of their tracks last year. all that hype was just in preparation to introduce us to their own material which is a nice mix of melodious tunes and catchy vast beats. we like!]

want to hear more? check out a free rcrd lbl mp3 of their cover of the current adele smash 'someone like you'

and their new single something you should know below

friends electric - something you should know

INDIE WEDNESDAYS: keren ann - my name is trouble

keren ann - my name is trouble
[someones been listening to ALOT of goldfrapp n'est ce pas? lucky for frenchie keren ann she is such a solid singer/songwriter that it doesn't really matter cause the track is so catchy and fun. enjoy!]

WONGIE DUB SOUL SONG(s) OF THE WEEK: two inch punch - love you up / luv luv

oh wow, what a nice little discovery! producer/dj ben ash aka two inch punch is self releasing his debut 12" this month showcasing his blend of soul, dub and every layered bleep in between. the end result is something so unique and brilliant at the same time. 2011 is fast becoming one of the most boundary pushing years in music and hopefully two inch punch will add to that mix in the coming months! genius!

two inch punch - love you up

two inch punch - luv luv

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE MONTH: the walkmen - while i shovel the snow

the walkmen - while i shovel the snow
[oh my gosh, this melancholic song is just amazing! so raw and sparse that it almost feels like you're encroaching on lead singer hamilton leithausers' inner secrets. absolutely mesmerizing!]

Monday, March 21, 2011

WONGIE HAPPY SONG OF THE WEEK: young galaxy - we have everything

young galaxy - we have everything
[nothing like a happy indie pop song from our friends up north in canada to start off your monday! taken from their current album 'shapeshifting', the trio of young galaxy actually recorded the album in sweden which they claimed changed their sound drastically. i liked them way back in 2008 and they put me in a great mood then, so i'm not complaining of this alleged 'change'!]

WONGIE HAPPY POP SONG OF THE WEEK: colbie caillat - i do

colbie caillat - i do
[i was actually quite surprised that this new colbie song wasn't in the vein of her usual bland pleasant hit count. instead this new track is a peppy cheeky silly anthem that might actually bring in some new fans along the way.]

WONGIE ROCK SONG OF THE WEEK: the raveonettes - recharge & revolt

the raveonettes - recharge & revolt
[danish rock duo the raveonettes return after a 2 year hiatus with their latest album 'raven in the grave', calling the album the 'perfect winter soundtrack', i'm feeling this track as a perfect spring sunset anthem instead!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: melanie fiona - gone and never coming back

melanie fiona - gone and never coming back
[the 1st single off her new album 'the MF life', this is music from the soul made all the more incredible by the deeply emotive voice of melanie fiona. why this woman isn't a massive star at this point is just a crime! love her!]

marissa nadler - rosary
[the perfect soundtrack to stay in bed just that much longer! thank you dreamy folk singer/songwriter marissa!]

Saturday, March 19, 2011

NEW GO! TEAM!: the go! team - apollo throwdown

the go! team - apollo throwdown
[i'm always on the fence with the go! team only cause they come across as a one-note (albeit happy one) double dutch band with 10 songs going on in the background at the same time. it's a hot mess and sometimes you're just in the mood for that. so happy weekend folks!]

NEW PAPERCUTS!: papercuts - do what you will

papercuts - do what you will
[things get smokey for papercuts leading man jason robert quever in the latest video for the band. but thankfully it doesn't take away from the retro dreaminess of his music. weekend listening just for you so press play!]

WONGIE GUILTY PLEASURE OF THE WEEK: jeremih feat 50 cent - down on me

jeremih feat 50 cent - down on me
[i'm pretty behind on this hip hop smash, (then again, i'm not a fan of 80% of the vocal filtered through autotune), but it was a viral video with keenan cahill and 50 cent that introduced me to this guilty pleasure of a song. it's catchy thats for sure, but PLEASE jeremih can you try and sing without machinery next time?]

wanna see the viral video that introduced me to the song? here is it below!

NEW MCFLY!: mcfly - that's the truth

mcfly - that's the truth
[oh the cheeky (literally) boys of mcfly. always courting the gay dollar while still cute and safe enough for the teenage dreaming girls. this time they return with a mid tempo ballad that continues to prove that they are very good at writing adult pop songs. now if only the adults will buy their music...]

NEW WRETCH 32!: wretch 32 feat example - unorthodox

wretch 32 feat example - unorthodox
[how catchy is this song? sampling the classic stone roses, wretch 32 is fast becoming a solid UK crossover rap act for 2011! throw in a infectious hook by example and you've got an instant top 10 for the UK charts! sweet!]

GAL FRIDAY: nicole scherzinger - don't hold your breath

nicole scherzinger - don't hold your breath
[this toby gad/dave aude penned number is probably one of the best songs that nicole has released as a solo artist. though it doesn't break new ground musically, it's catchy enough that it hopefully will pave the way for a proper release of her (2nd attempt) debut 'killer love']

GRATUITOUS JUSTIN BIEBER POST: justin bieber feat rascal flatts - that should be me

justin bieber feat rascal flatts - that should be me
[no comment on this song or collaboration, but thank you for visiting!]

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: jamie woon - lady luck (video premiere)

WONGIE INDIE DANCE SONG OF THE WEEK: architecture in helsinki - contact high

architecture in helsinki - contact high
[what a naughty tactile video (and i'm sorry, is the lead guy actually a girl?)! it's the return of everyone's favorite aussie electronic weirdos (and that's a good thing)! taken off their upcoming album moment bends, if every track is as strong as this one, i can't wait to hear the rest!]

WONGIE WACKY SONG OF THE WEEK: movits! - sammy davis jr.

movits! - sammy davis jr.
[nothing like a hip hop swing band to make your thursday interesting don't you think? hailing from sweden, the trio of movits! gained some notoriety last year when stephen colbert introduced the band on his talk show which led to them getting signed on the grammy award winning comedy central record label (which usually specializes in stand up albums). with their 2nd release 'ut ur min skalle' coming out in april, the trio offer up their catchy and wacky tribute to sammy davis jr! we like!]

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: dev feat the cataracs - in the dark

dev feat the cataracs - in the dark
[let the party begin! the cataracs once again produce a fun party starter with their muse dev. their last single bass down low surprisingly didn't catch on, so fingers crossed with this one. i kind of love it!]

FILMED IN JAPAN: black eyed peas - just can't get enough

for more information on resources, people finder and how to donate to japan, click on this page.

black eyed peas - just can't get enough
[shot a week before the earthquake and tsunami in japan, there's something so sad and haunting watching this video now.]

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: white lies - strangers

white lies - strangers
[this is definitely one of the most 'positive' sounding singles by white lies (which they go and make weird with fetish imagery in the video). of course it being white lies, the lyrics tell a different story, so you don't have to feel guilty for having moments of uplift!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: the wombats - anti d

the wombats - anti d
[epic! i've always kind of been 'meh' about the band only cause their name sounds like they deserve to be a saturday morning cartoon. but this song proves that they are definitely a band to reckon with. love this!]

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: everything everything - final form

everything everything - final form
[starting our brand new indie wednesdays, we offer up the latest video by the eclectic quartet everything everything. i've been a fan of these boys for quite some time now only cause they make music that challange the format of song structure and melody. it's like listening to indie jazz! always surprising, always incredible, check out their latest track now!]

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: teddybears feat robyn - cardiac arrest

teddybears feat robyn - cardiac arrest
[i'm so enamored with robyn that anything she does is gold in my eyes. BUT reuniting with her buddies, the teddybears, is a collaboration to celebrate! the now classic track, 'cobrastyle' (written by the teddybears) still remains one of my fave robyn tracks, so you should understand how excited i am about this new single!]

don't know 'cobrastyle'? here it is for old times sake:

robyn - cobrastyle

WONGIE SOUL POP SONG OF THE WEEK: dionne bromfield feat diggy simmons - yeah right

dionne bromfield feat diggy simmons - yeah right
[what a strong song! presented by amy winehouse (again!), dionne bromfield has one of those old soul voices trapped in the form of a cute 15 year old girl. launching her upcoming 2nd album 'good for the soul', i am totally feeling this girl!]

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: liam bailey - you better leave me

liam bailey - you better leave me
[taking on the baton of the current UK retro soul movement, singer songwriter liam bailey has already gained some buzz as the haunting voice of the awesome chase and status anthem 'blind faith'. discovered by amy winehouse, 'you better leave me' is the official 1st single off his debut album 'out of the shadows' and i'm hoping the rest will sound just as good!]
