WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: justin bieber feat quavo - intentions

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: the internet - la di da

the internet - la di da
after releasing their excellent album 'hive mind' last week, the internet put out an official video for their album highlight 'la di da' which is the best vibe of the late summer! just lean back and enjoy this awesomely chill jam will ya!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: sza - garden

sza - garden (say it like dat)
how cool that sza and donald glover (aka childish gambino) have a friendship that allows for them to pop up in each other's videos (did you see her in the cameo for 'this is america'?). now he returns the favor by frolicking in the forest with the soul singer as she expresses her insecurities in the vulnerable 'garden'.

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: janelle monae - i like that

janelle monae - i like that
it's single #4 from janelle monae's album 'dirty computer' and from all the previous releases, this album might be one of the best of the year (we find out this weekend!). the good news for fans is that janelle is releasing a 44 minute short film that janelle is calling an "emotion picture" that will premiere on mtv and bet. love this jam!

WONGIE SOUL SONG(s) OF THE WEEK: leon bridges - bad bad news / bet ain't worth the hand

leon bridges - bad bad news
directed by natalie rea and starring the gorgeous paloma elsesser, this jazzy groove jam marks an updated sound from the soul crooner that has diehard fans learning how to process potentially dancing to his music from now on. all this makes his upcoming album 'good thing' very exciting for the rest of us who are more than happy to go along with whatever musical direction he's taking us on.

leon bridges - bet ain't worth the hand
[UPDATE 4/2: check out the video premiere of this dreamy video!] ok fine, you want retro soul, you got it! leon channels the spirit of the doo wop era with lush orchestrations of the 60's thrown in. it's gorgeous and marks a perfect bookend of what's to come on this album. so excited!!!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: justin timberlake - man of the woods

justin timberlake - man of the woods
ok i have to say that i was really looking forward to listening to JT's country/ americana album, but it's pretty official that the misleading album promo is just a visual front and the album 'man of the woods' is still showcasing a man rooted in soul. the nice thing about the title track is that it's a catchy low key effort (it even has an acapella breakdown) that is a subtle change for both JT and producers the neptunes. there's alot more of these jams on the album, but hey, as long as it's not anything like the 1st two singles, i'm good! oh and the kitschy paul hunter / prettybird directed video is fun too.

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: d/c - badman

d/c - badman (live @ mahogany session)
nothing like discovering a new soulful singer songwriter from the UK through this wonderful self penned track. just listening to daniel caplen's (aka d/c) gravelly storied voice telling his story of redemption through this gospel tinged gem is worth our collective love. definitely one to keep on our radar!

wanna hear the studio version of badman (and some other lovely tracks?), click on the soundcloud player below:

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: snakehips feat zayn - cruel

snakehips feat zayn - cruel
oh my gosh, the new snakehips with zayn track is IT! like i can't get over how 90's soultastic it is! this kind of proves that the snakehips duo are not only two of the coolest producers out at the moment, but zayn is just completely right on with his smart collaborations as a solo artist. yeah this is good repeat again stuff!

AUDIO PREMIERE: drake - one dance (feat wizkid & kyla) / pop style (feat kanye west & jay z)

in one fell swoop drake released two new singles hyping up his upcoming album 'views from the 6' coming out later this month. the one i'm feeling is the dancehall tinged track that samples kyla's "do you mind" which i hope will generate another awesome drake dad dancing video. following that single's release, drake offered up another track featuring a pairing simply called the throne (aka kanye & jay z). just enough serious hype for all his fans. i'm SUPER excited to hear more of this album now!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: corinne bailey rae - been to the moon

corinne bailey rae - been to the moon
the return of corinne bailey rae is both joyous and mysterious as she has taken the discreet road over the years as an artist to only reveal herself when new material is ready. with the new album 'the heart speaks in whispers', corinne offers up a beautiful jazzy number accompanied by this gorgeous video by directors favorite colour black. we have missed you, but you're back so happy news for all!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: brandy - beggin & pleadin

brandy - beggin & pleadin
um... where has THIS brandy been all my life? the singer/actress has taken her time to release any new material (since 2012 yo!) but if this all-in spirit is the way forward for her, then this will be a very exciting musical period for her! i'm excited!!!

VIDEO PREMIERE: the weeknd - can't feel my face

the weeknd - can't feel my face
the funky instahit by the weeknd finally gets a dramatic fiery video and it's kind of crazy! yeesh!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: miguel - coffee

miguel - coffee
i should have been praising this song last week, but better late than never right? definitely the sexiest song out at the moment! thank you miguel!!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: lianne la havas - what you don't do

lianne la havas - what you don't do
this is just joy! lianne la havas has offered up one of the most commercial friendly soul songs of her career and it's just full of pure smiles. the album 'blood' is shaping up to be an interesting release and this awesome track proves that the UK chanteuse is definitely one of the best soul gals around!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: lion babe - wonder woman

lion babe - wonder woman
channelling some serious classic erykah badu, the NY based duo of lion babe have come up with yet another jam that sets them up as THE exciting soul act of the year! throw in the sparse production by pharrell and you've got our soul song of the week. we like!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: the weeknd - earned it (fifty shades of grey OST)

the weeknd - earned it (fifty shades of grey OST)
ooh this is a bit of a surprise. the weeknd gave us this early xmas present with this classy dramatic string laden jam, laced with retro fillings! since it's connected to the upcoming buzzy fifty shades film, one can only imagine silk wrist tying and candle wax everywhere in this video. so um... happy holidays!!

FINALLY...A VIDEO!: erik hassle - pathetic

erik hassle - pathetic
it was a sexy slinky jam back in february and it still plays as one of the best soul songs of the year. tell me you're not making stank face neck twirls when you're listening to this song. SO good!!!

FINALLY...A VIDEO!: daley - look up

daley - look up
we loved this song back in september of 2013 and team daley FINALLY put out a video showcasing his growing fanbase in the US. the song is still a retro soul gem and if you didn't love it back then, you really should this time around!

WONGIE SOUL SONG OF THE WEEK: meg mac - roll up your sleeves

meg mac - roll up your sleeves
oh her voice! meg sets up her debut EP with this gospel infused soul number that is just the kind of uplift you need for your day. we LOVED her previous single "every lie" and we're already playing this on repeat!
