with a great 2015 under his belt, 21 year old singer/songwriter/producer uzoechi emenike (aka mnek) releases his 1st single of of 2016 and it's going to be another smash. believe it or not this also sets up his debut album (where did all his previous hits come from?) which is due later this year. kicking off another year of hits, this is a good one to be associated with.

so it looks like we're gonna try to make this PLAYS series a weekly gathering! last weeknadia brought the sweet storied voice of brandi carlile to you guys, now it's my turn as i kind of turn up the 90's soul jam, refurbished into the very modern "say sumthin" by the 20 year old uk act zak abel.
though we're not too far from a proper debut album release, zak has been busy lending his vocals to hits by gorgon city & joker last year. but what i'm bringing you is a gem from his EP 'one hand on the future' which features this amazing tune that one can't help but bop heavily to.

so nice to see rudimental working with up and coming UK young soul voices for their latest single 'rumour mill'. taking out their usual drum n bass beats for a low key house groove, this is definitely a fun cool number that lasts into the late night. just wonderful!

made up of two japanese musicians who met on a message board (!), Umi Takahashi and Yoko Watanabe (though that could be false since they have a knack for being cheeky folk - UPDATE it's actually super producers benny bianco and two inch punch), what i do know about benzel is that they've co-written two of my favetracks off of jessie ware's upcoming album and now have sprinkled some of their awesome skills for themselves!
joel compass - girlfriends
originally poised to be a uk soul singer in the vein of frank ocean but with a strong poppier leaning, joel compass and co have obviously decided to throw in a completely lighter sound perfect for the summer. it's breezy and has a solid chorus, plus joel is so easy on the eyes! we like!

oh we fell in love with this uk soul jam last month and it's still sounds like one of the freshest numbers around at the moment (how every verse adds another layer til it explodes in the end!) kind of brilliant!

with over 1m in singles sales thanks to her contributions to the #1 hits by clean bandit and route 94, jess glynne is poised to be the next big uk soul act of 2014. with her debut single produced by gorgon city, this soul house jam is infectious (even though the video is SHITE!) and ready for big things.
