oh what wonderful imagery from director sheila johansson to showcase swedish singer seinabo sey's awesome return single 'i owe you nothing'. building slowly til a full on choir kicks in by the end, seinabo is playing with the sound of soul by giving it a bare bones alt twist that is distinctly all hers. i've been a fan since her last album and i gotta say, this kicks it up a major notch! turn it up!!!

the acoustic loop playing below sza freestyle vocals is easily one of the highlights of her acclaimed debut album 'ctrl'. when the drums kick in at the end it's like we are officially in total celebration of her thoughts and it's kind of genius. no wonder people have been buzzing about this talented voice for the past year. i'm a late-comer but damn i sure enjoy the discovery!

originally an unreleased track from their album 'season high' the swedish quartet couldn't let go of this track and asked the esteemed raphael saadiq to add some producer magic on it. he suggested faith evans as a co-vocalist and the rest is this airy soulful magic track that you hear right before you. little dragon have consistently put out amazing future soul this year and this caps off their incredible year perfectly!

first things first, grey worm (game of thrones) can sing!!!! now that we've got that out of the way, raleigh ritchie (aka jacob basil anderson) has decided to put out the electronic tinged EP 'mind the gap' to close out a very buzzy year after the release of his debut album 'you're a man now, boy'. directed by jacob himself, this is definitely a personal track for him which makes the beautiful track all the more compelling to listen to. love this!

directed by filmmaker jake schreier (paper towns), this minimalist video showcases francis farewell starlite (aka francis and the lights) with his friends bon iver and kanye doing some choice dancing. oh and the song is damn awesome too!

with a great 2015 under his belt, 21 year old singer/songwriter/producer uzoechi emenike (aka mnek) releases his 1st single of of 2016 and it's going to be another smash. believe it or not this also sets up his debut album (where did all his previous hits come from?) which is due later this year. kicking off another year of hits, this is a good one to be associated with.

looks like alunageorge's new album is turning into a highly curated collaboration lab as the title track joins forces with aussie producer flume in this syncopated soul jam. though there's no release date set for the album (they're still recording it yo!) the duo are definitely on the right track with what they've put out so far. damn is this song good!

alex crossan (aka mura masa) has been on our radar since his collaboration with uk soul singer nao made our best of list last year (#25 yo!). he's now back with another wonderfully romantic jam with the help of bonzai that's just been a favorite on our carmix 2016. with a whole new generation of modern soul music coming from the UK these days, mura masa is definitely one of the buzziest acts making the rounds now. we like this guy ALOT!

the thing about beyonce these days is that every performance is at a level 10 (subtlety what's that?) so this interesting collaboration with naughty boy is nice to experience, cause at least it feels like a toned down 8 (though i would have preferred a more vulnerable vocal). i shouldn't complain cause this just teases what will be a very exciting new album for the producer.

norwegian dj/producer magnus august høiberg (aka cashmere cat) is having a bit of a moment as his beautiful kanye west track 'wolves' is buzzing everywhere and now his new single with ariana grande (who he's previously worked on two tracks with) is out and it's LOVE-erly! it's definitely going to be a big year for this 27 year old talent, you have been warned!

though we first heard moko on the chase and status house anthem 'count on me', this lush release from her debut ep gives me hope that moko's upcoming album will be one to watch for this year. reminding me of classic massive attack, this is classy soul with a dance twist that is just phenomenal. i'm a fan!

john legend - made to love
it's always nice to see a mainstream artist expanding their horizons and making interesting music in the process. working with past collaborators kanye west and dave tozer, the three got together to try to record a soul album with a modern context. this cinematic single is a wonderful result (with kimbra adding some dramatic flair) and hopefully a taster of what could be an interesting album by a relevant artist looking to create something new.

you gotta give it up to electronic soul wizard james blake for keeping things just as hypnotic and mesmerizing since we last heard him back in 2011. there is no dubstep breakdown or raised voices, just vocal loops, insane range and in the case of the video, motorcyclists from space. yaaay!!!
