AUDIO LEAK: sia - tomorrow / peter joback feat sia - wicked games
sia - tomorrow (annie) [we miss ya sia... release some new stuff please!]
peter joback feat sia - wicked games (chris isaak cover) [not sure if i like this peter joback's voice (compared to the original) but it's nice to be reminded of this song nevertheless]
shakira - do it again [at least this pop diva dances! i just wish the song wasn't so weak and tin-ny. i'm really hoping someone goes in and gives the track some proper block rocking beats to make it a killer song]
WONGIE DISCOVERY: wild beasts - all the kings men / all the kings men (live @ later with jools holland) / hooting and howling
wild beast - all the kings men [this band had me at the falsetto!]
if you like this, check out a live version from last weekends later with jools holland below:
wild beasts - all the kings men [from rcrd lbl (who are also offering this song as a freebie!): Singer Hayden Thorpe's voice veers between a falsetto and a primal yelp. He often sounds like he's using his vocal register to vent an emotional frustration; the result is a confident vulnerability and that rarest of things, a genuine sense of charm. Now with an average age of twenty-one Wild Beasts started when they were just eighteen. The band deliberately sought to distance themselves from what they assumed was the norm. Recalling their formative years Thorpe confirms their distinct sense of identity: "We're lucky we worked really hard and made a conscious effort to be a as individual as we could. It came out of a boredom and lack of interest in beer and testosterone rock. It concentrated us like a fruit".
The band, now based in Leeds, originally hail from Kendal. Growing up the band were well aware of their surroundings. Thorpe reflects: "There was a definite sense of isolation. We never got rapt up in any scene and we've never been validated”. As much as reflect the Lake District landscape, the songs on Limbo, Panto suggest an environment where Philip Larkin and Noel Coward might playfully argue the merits of trouser length as a metaphor before measuring their own. Thorpe confirms the band are well aware they are operating on their terms: "The openness and humour is part of the music's strength and is its greatest vulnerability." Wild Beasts are an extremely rare proposition, a band happy to stand or fall on their own terms letting their muse be their wayward guide. Undeniable and refreshing let them seep out of the limestone and into your consciousness by, to quote Brave, Bulging Clairvoyants: "Adopting this young spirit of sin / to make the most, before we turn to ghost."]
WONGIE REMIX OF THE WEEK: lindstrom & christabelle - baby can't stop (aeroplane remix)
lindstrom & christabelle - baby can't stop (aeroplane remix) [featured on last weekend's pete tong essential mix of the week, this piece of disco fantastico is probably one of the best things i've heard all week. utterly brilliant!!! once again aeroplane work their magic on an already sweet tune. OH and the amazing folks over at rcrd lbl are offering the track for free!!!]
port o brien - my will is good [from wiki: 'Port O'Brien' are an American musical group combining elements of acoustic, folk and indie rock.
They are named after a bay featuring a now-abandoned cannery on Kodiak Island where founder member Van Pierszalowski's parents met. They started out as a folk music duo of Cambria Goodwin and Van Pierszalowski while Cambria was living in Cambria, California and Van was living in Oakland. After Cambria moved closer to Oakland they added a rhythm section composed of Caleb Nichols and Joshua Barnhart.
The band has toured nationally with artists such as Nada Surf, Bright Eyes and The Cave Singers and toured Europe with Modest Mouse, as well as receiving favourable reviews from Pitchfork Media, Allmusic, and The Times. M. Ward named Port O'Brien his "favorite new band".
To date the band has released three albums; a compilation of self-recorded and early tracks called The Wind and the Swell on American Dust Records and a studio-recorded album All We Could Do Was Sing on City Slang Records, and their latest studio album Threadbare on TBD Records.]

WONGIE DISCOVERY: patch william - the boy with the guitar / the last bus

The band have recently finished their debut album whereby an EP will be released on 26th October and available to download from itunes, and the album will follow soon after.]
nobody beats the drum - purple cactus [omg this dutch act totally reminds me of the early prodigy stuff and that's a GOOD thing! not only that, but the good posse are also allowing us to share their block rockin beats to you guys for FREE! enjoy!]
jonathan jeremiah - happiness [from facebook: Jonathan Jeremiah is a London-born singer/songwriter. His debut album ‘Fool In Love', which he composed, performed and produced himself, is a heart-warming symphony of acoustic guitar and orchestration.
‘Fool In Love’ uses London’s highly regarded Heritage Orchestra, with the conductor Jules Buckley at the helm. Jonathan decided on an entirely analogue recording process which he was able to do at the Fishfactory Studios, West London, and it is this that gives the album its uniquely warm sound.
Jonathan Jeremiah’s musical inspiration comes from a not so distant past, where artists like James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Scott Walker and Nick Drake made music that moved people and spoke like a zeitgeist to its audience. Jonathan Jeremiah’s sound echoes such a time, and yet has a modern touch that firmly places him in the present.
The future looks exciting for Jonathan Jeremiah. Having completed his debut album, he is looking forward to taking it to the world. Accompanied by his band comprising a pianist, double bass and rhythm section, Jonathan's live performance is a wonderful blend of folk, acoustic, soul and blues.]
YOU GOTTA SEE THIS: we were once a fairytale (directed by spike jonze / starring kanye west)
we were once a fairytale (directed by spike jonze / starring kanye west) [this is a weird way to kill off your demons kanye. even weirder that spike is the ringleader of this. wonder who convinced who to make this short?]
[from wiki: Orba Squara is the stage name of New York-based singer/songwriter Mitch Davis.
He has recorded two full-length albums, Sunshyness and the upcoming "The Trouble With Flying." Davis uses many "organic" instruments on the album. These include mandolin, glockenspiel, accordion, sitar, violin, harmonica, toy pianos, xylophone and ukulele. Not only were all the songs written by Davis, but he performed everything on the recordings himself.
Davis instigated interest in his music by giving copies of his album to friends, who in turn passed it along. It reached Universal Music Publishing through word of mouth. Orba Squara has been called "the new Moby" in the press because 9 songs from the 10 song debut album "sunshyness" have been licensed for film and television projects. This fact makes Orba Squara's "Sunshyness" the most licensed album since Moby's 1999 release, "Play."
Orba Squara and the "Sunshyness" album have been credited with sparking the current trend of happy glockenspiel and bell melodies layered over simple bouncy guitar rhythms. A sound beginning with Apple's use of "Perfect Timing" in the original iPhone commercials and which style is now heard in movies, television and music everywhere.
For his second album, "The Trouble With Flying", Mitch managed to enlist the talents of his childhood rock idol, Billy Squier. Squier's involvement breaks the Orba Squara mold of the "one man band" by contributing additional guest vocals and guitar work to two of the 13 songs on the release.]
orba squara - gravel [like what you hear, check out this sweet tune taken off his 2007 debut album sunshyness]
WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK / FREE MP3 YO!: art vs science - parlez vous francais

[from her myspace page: After the recent release of her new single and video clip, ‘The Way You Are’, which is making radio waves around the country, Kate Vigo is making a name for herself in the music scene. With a sound that sits astride eclectic pop and stylized 60s rock, Kate is joined by amazing ensemble musicians known as ‘The Underground Orchestra’.
The fast rising vocalist came into the limelight as highest album selling performer of the 2008 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival. Whilst her jazz foundations have served her well, she has now changed her sound to embody an eclectic mixture of sounds, from pop rock to subtle acoustic refrains teamed with programmed loops, intricate melodies, Kate’s trademark soulful voice and 60's girl band influence.
Kate finished a degree in fashion design before undertaking a bachelor in voice improvisation at The VCA and, while worlds apart, parallels can be found in Kate’s music and her love of fashion. Weaving together a distinct array of sounds, from Billie Holiday to Feist, by way of Prince and Aretha Franklin, Kate’s eclectic mix of influences create a foundation on which she builds her distinctive, yet accessible, compositions.
‘The Way You Are’ is the first singlefrom Kate’s upcoming album which she is working on in collaboration with Damien Charles, also producer of ‘The Red Eyes’.
In Kate’s home city of Melbourne you can catch her and the The Underground Orchestra in premier original music venues such as The Northcote Social Club, The Toff in Town, The Empress, 303 and Manchester Lane.]
ERIK HASSLE DAY: erik hassle - hurtful (new video version) / in for the kill (la roux cover) / don't bring flowers after i'm dead / sos (abba cover)
[figured today would be a great day to revisit the swedish act erik hassle. the 20 year old boy has been on my blip since late july and it looks like he's really getting the big push in the UK these days. it's all deserving cause he's definitely one of the more exciting acts to come out this year.]
erik hassle - hurtful (new video version)
[personally, i didn't think the original one was bad. guess tv screens are sexier]
erik hassle - in for the kill (la roux cover)
[wow, this is even better than the original!]
erik hassle - don't bring flowers (after i'm dead)
[an official video for one of my fave tracks of the summer]
sliimy - paint your face / wake up (digital dog club edit)
sliimy - paint your face [from about.com He is French, so that name is pronounced 'Slee-mee.' This new artist is lucky or in a tough place depending on your opinion of his top benefactor of the moment, gossip blogger Perez Hilton. Sliimy first came to widespread attention through a unique version of Britney Spears' "Womanizer" that spread on the Internet. Then Perez Hilton picked up Sliimy as the first signing to his new vanity record label Perezscious. Sliimy's real name is Yanis Sahraoui, and he is a 20 year old from Saint-Etienne, France. His music is playful, colorful, and it just might definitely appeal to those charmed by artists such as Mika.
Sliimy does have an album out titled Paint Your Face and enough recognition to get nominated for an MTV Europe award as Best French Artist.]
sliimy - wake up (digital dog club edit) [personally i like this remix much better than the original]
cold cave - love comes close [from pitchfork: Wesley Eisold, the man behind Philadelphia's Cold Cave, is the former frontman for hardcore bands like Some Girls, American Nightmare, and Give Up the Ghost. He was also involved in a plagiarism controversy with Pete Wentz and receives songwriting credit on a Fall Out Boy album. Not exactly the first person you'd expect to be making beautiful, experimental synthpop.
Cold Cave weaves incomprehensibly distorted vocals with bits of synthetic feedback. But songs like "Love Comes Close" and "Life Magazine" also come bearing serious hooks. That mixture of postpunk unease and fluid bleep would've made Cold Cave fit right in on the early-80s Factory Records roster alongside Section 25 or the Durutti Column.
Eisold started the project solo, but Cold Cave has evolved to include other contributors, including Dominick Fernow, who makes unsettling electronic noise as Prurient, and Caralee McElroy, who left Xiu Xiu in May.]
Kickdrums is comprised of producer/singer/songwriter Alex Fitts (Fitts) and dj/producer Matt Penttila (Tilla). The two met while working as engineers at a studio in Cleveland, Ohio. They shared many common interests and both had reputations as skilled producers. Combining their efforts, the two united as “The Kickdrums” and spent the next five years perfecting their craft behind the scenes, producing records for major and independent artists across the boards. In 2007 The Kickdrums had grown tired of the redundant songs in rotation on television and the radio. Fitts dived deep into his alt rock roots and Penttila began experimenting with his love for electronic music. With their focus shifting, The Kickdrums started distancing themselves from working with outside artists. Fitts would spend his days penning songs and unraveling chord progressions, while Penttila would break down records and flip obscure samples on his drum machine. All the rules were thrown out the window. The end product would be mesh of alternative rock, soul music, and hip hop laid over heavy drum breaks and fuzzy guitars.]
Two Door Cinema Club are 3 people with the help of technology and a thirst for anything quirky. If you were to pose the question, “Where do Two Door Cinema Club live?” and someone was to answer, “Why, Bangor!” That someone would only be 66.67% correct because Two Door Cinema Club are a Bangor/Donaghadee based electro pop band. An obvious absence in the rhythm department is humbly filled by an unadulterated Macintosh and the electronic thump from the fourth imperceptible member goes hand in hand with the electro/pop direction. Their music has been loosely compared to the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene but without a definitive capacity to be pigeon-holed. Melodic vocals, which hail from all three members of the outfit, infuse with guitar riffs that have been described as “oceanic” and rhythm described as “pulsing”. To get the symbolism out of the way, take your seats; it’s going to be a blockbuster!]
Little Comets are a "four-piece multi-pronged quadrilateral" from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. They play 'kitchen sink indie' music, citing Debussy, Roald Dahl, Ella Fitzgerald and Paul Simon as influences. In early 2009 the band were signed to Columbia Records and are currently recording their debut album in France. In early 2009 they released the single 'One Night in October' through Lucky Number Records, reaching number 3 in the UK independent singles charts. The single was played by Huw Stevens, Zane Lowe and Sara Cox amongst others on BBC Radio 1.
Their first single on Columbia Records, 'Adultery', will be released on October 26th. In the build-up to this release the band will tour the UK as support to Hockey, The Twang and The Noisettes.]
Fool’s Gold, the side project of Foreign Born hombre numero uno Lewis Pesacov, has too many things going for it to keep it as a side project for long. For one, Fool’s Gold are all about Afro-pop, which, as anyone with an RSS full of remixes that can only be described as “tropical” can tell you, is hot shit right now. Second, they have a guy (Luke Top) who sings in Hebrew throughout most of the album. Hebrew! Can you believe it? Fool’s Gold is the only band that could appear in Fader and JWeekly at the same time. It’s like the members of Fool’s Gold work-shopped how to make themselves more highly bloggable, and they totally succeeded.]
bad lieutenant - sink or swim [from wiki: After Peter Hook's departure from New Order in early 2007, the remaining members elected to continue to make music as New Order. The band would continue to exist in a figurative sense until early 2009 when Bad Lieutenant was officially announced, along with details of the debut album Never Cry Another Tear.
The band's debut single "Sink or Swim" was released on September 28, 2009, followed by the album Never Cry Another Tear on October 5, 2009. The album features collaborations with Blur bassist Alex James.
The band will then set off on a tour of the UK throughout October and November.[4] The band will play two confirmed dates in the US: November 18 in Chicago and November 21 in New York.]
the antlers - two [from wiki: Initially, The Antlers was a solo project created by vocalist and guitarist Peter Silberman immediately after he had moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he had isolated himself from family and friends. Silberman wrote the first album, "In the Attic of the Universe" by himself and under his own name. Afterwards, he recruited Lerner and Cicci, becoming a collaborative group. The band recorded two EPs; "Cold War" and "New York Hospitals". Silberman's collection of songs (which was mentioned as an "elegy for his planned disappearance") would later become a full-length album titled "Hospice" and would feature an epic storyline, telling the story of a man losing a loved one to cancer and having to witness her death first-hand. The album was independently released by the band in March of 2009, selling an apparently overwhelming number of copies, later selling all of their stock and had to produce more. The band later commented that they had "bit off more than they could chew"[1]. The album received critical praise for both its narrative and musicianship and has since been listed on several "Album of the Year" lists. The band later signed with New York-based French Kiss Records. The label released a remastered "Hospice" on August 18, 2009]

live at music hall of williamsburg (thanks to akemi for the pic)
mumford & sons - the cave (bookshop sessions) [easily one of my favorite songs of the moment by one of my favorite bands of the year. the love they express on stage is infectious and earnest (not twee). i'm obsessed and so should you ;)]
the xx - crystalised [this band are so disassociated in their live performance that you kind of listen to their musicality even more and realise that they are pretty darn good. weirdly reminded me of a post wave everything but the girl. what a strange night checking them out in the basement of a small club at 2am]
fever ray - stranger than kindness [ok, call me lame, but i really don't get the love that fever ray gets. the music is beautiful, but the vocals are just creepy in that not so good kind of way. i dig the remixes, but the original stuff leaves me 'yucky'. there go my cool points. i can deal.]
rihanna - russian roulette [from rolling stone: The wait is officially ova: Rihanna’s “Russian Roulette,” the first single off her upcoming album Rated R, debuted this morning at approximately 11:23 a.m. EST at the official RihannaNow Website. “Roulette” opens up with a desperado guitar lick that hints at an impending shootout before the throbbing and foreboding bassline that carries the track settles in. The dark ballad, which Ne-Yo wrote and produced, seems to find Rihanna singing about enduring a tumultuous relationship and keeping faith in a dangerous boyfriend.]

They are Christian (guitar), Charlie (vocals/guitar), Rory (vocals), Ali (drums) and Thom (bass). Their 2008 debut EP, Slow Kids, attracted the attention of Huw Stephens and led to them being invited to play on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury.]
wiki says: Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese for "casual sex", or more literally "playful sex") is an indie band based in New York City. Their music draws influence from the shoegazing genre, and similarly uses a textured and effects-heavy vocal and guitar sound. The band consists of Yuki Chikudate (vocals, keyboards) and James Hanna (guitar, vocals)]

the drums - lets go surfing [from their webpage: "We only write about two feelings: one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. FINALLY an artist from the x-factor competition that can do more than stand and sing (um... leona) click here if the video doesn't work]
michael jackson - this is it [from NY TIMES: Based on a tape Mr. Jackson left behind containing only his piano and vocals, a full arrangement was built, complete with swelling strings and his brothers’ backup vocals. The song is to run during the closing credits of the new Jackson film, perhaps not coincidentally called “This Is It.]
darin - viva la vida (coldplay cover) [this kid has a total pop voice, but it's a good cover of an overused song
wikipedia says: darin zanyar more commonly known as 'darin' is a swedish pop singer of kurdish descent who was first runner-up in Idol 2004. zanyar has after that gone on to become one of swedens best selling singers with numerous chart topping songs and music albums.]

WONGIE DISCOVERY: mcalmont & nyman - take the money and run
mcalmont & nyman - take the money and run [what a strange but awesome collaboration between two different artists. but this is the bio of the wonderful project (thanks to xolondon for the intro)
It was mentioned on the grapevine that Michael Nyman might be interested in working with David but this was all hearsay until 2007 when David in creative frustration decided to join Facebook. Nyman contacted him within a week. They remembered their first encounter to each other and quickly began plotting a collaboration. During a hastily arranged lunch meeting at The Fishworks on Upper Street Michael stated that he was far too post modern to write about feelings and David had a Eureka moment as he had become bored with the navel gazing futility of penning love songs about his own feelings and at 40 wanted to create something more worthwhile with his lyric writing.
At this point Gericault’s Raft Of The Medusa emerged as a subject of interest but instead of pursuing that specific angle David became fascinated with the life of the 19th French painter especially his determination to create documentary canvases based on contemporary life; battle-field injury, asylum inmates and shipwreck memoirs. Using this approach as an inspiration it was then decided that David would select Nyman compositions and use them as backing tracks.
David listened to and absorbed the music and then turned to the worldwide news web for suitable story sources. Rather than inspire pieces based on heartbreak or the trials of love this process enabled writing of more pertinent pieces on subjects as varied as 21st century Piracy (Going To America), trafficked prostitution in Europe(A City Called Turin), Lothario world leaders (In Re Don Giovanni), assisted suicide (Friendly Fire), reality television (The Glare), international jewellery heists (Dorothy), African orphan migration (Fever Sticks and Bones), banking errors (Take The Money And Run) and Drug Mules (In Laos).
It was also felt that the songs were most effective when written from the first person point of view of individual characters in researched reports. This approach provided an emotional engagement with the subjects that is lost by the time their stories emerge in the glare of the 24 hour news media.
This process of course caused initial concern for McAlmont because he was taking already brilliant compositions, adding to and adjusting them. Fortunately, Michael Nyman was delighted with the result.]
