WE HEART CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS: christine and the queens - night 52 / jonathan (feat perfume genius) / paradis perdus / tilted

after slaying the charts back home in france for the past year with her debut album 'chaleur humaine', heloise letissier (aka christine and the queens) sets her sights for world domination with a re-edited version of her album filled with bi-lingual performances and new songs thrown in. part performance artist, part diva, part scruffy tom boy, the magic of this singer is the clear vision of her music, her visuals and her incredible live persona. after experiencing it last night, our love for christine and the queens is now in a fever pitch. check out some of our fave songs of hers at the moment:

christine and the queens - night 52
a reworking of her debut single 'nuit 17 a 52', i have to say that i'm surprised that this english version works better than the original (but that chorus! bliss!)

christine and the queens feat perfume genius - jonathan
a longtime fan of the canadian singer, heloise went straight to mike hadreas (aka perfume genius) to supply the male vocals to this heartbreaking track about hidden love. it's haunting and will stay with you long after the song is over. kind of brilliant.

christine and the queens - paradis perdus
i mean any woman that mashes up the classic 1973 song by christophe to kanye west's "heartless" is kind of worth your admiration don't you think?

christine and the queens - tilted
a pretty direct translation of her massive smash 'christine', this is the kind of self empowerment anthem that young people should be listening to. it gets better with this kind of music people!

WONGIE DISCOVERY: alessia cara - here

alessia cara - here
discovered via her youtube channel, toronto based singer/songwriter alessia is getting some serious buzz with her wallflower anthem "here" where she is seemingly vocal freestyling over the classic isaac hayes 'ike's rap II'. signed just a year ago to def jam, this is a very auspicious start for the young talent. radar alert!

WONGIE INDIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: ryn weaver - the fool

ryn weaver - the fool
we fell in love with ryn's previous single 'octahate' last year (which is getting some pop radio traction these days) and now she charms us with her new single which is just magical (especially if you listen to it late at night). allegedly inspired by the animation of studio ghibli the video is equally inspired. definitely a fan!!

to be very honest, ALL of these songs are wongie songs of the week. but with a bit of a hiatus coming up (work abroad), i figured i'd do a few BIG posts of these amazing songs for you to discover in your own time. they are gems and deserve your love. enjoy these cram mixes!

christine and the queens - saint claude
inspired by her visit to london and immersing herself in the drag community, héloïse letissier (aka christine and the queens) has quickly become the french hipster/fashionista pop star of the moment. if subdued, yet impactful singles like this one are part of her repertoire, we'll be hearing ALOT more from this gem.

husky - i'm not coming back
the perfect post summer folk jam from aussie band husky. setting up their sophomore release 'ruckers hill', this is an exciting tease of things to come!

little may - boardwalks
i mean how can you not love this gentle number from the aussie trio? with their debut EP coming out in october, this is a great single to kickstart their buzz. just wonderful!

odesza feat monsoonsiren - memories that you call

odesza feat zyra - say my name
wait, this glorious sound comes from seattle? college friends harrison mills and clayton knight are definitely gaining overground attention these days with their beautiful layered pop electronica. we love them so much that we are showcasing two tracks from their upcoming 'in return' album!

sheppard - something's missing
we've already fallen in love with this vocal folk pop act through their awesome singalong hit 'geronimo'. it's great to know that they have more equally catchy and charming songs up their sleeves. LOVE these guys!

seafret - give me something
this young UK duo are causing quite a stir with their beautifully acoustic debut single. it's quietly heartbreaking and just the perfect kind of music for me to get obsessive about! brilliant!

vianney - je te deteste
what a fun perfect pop song by debut french artist vianney. a definite local hit over the summer, the song's catchy framework translates beyond language into a gem for your audio pleasure. love this!

INDIE DANCE MIX: supreme cuts feat channy - envision

supreme cuts feat channy - envision
there's something so free flow with this song, as if there's no song structure (even though it falls under dance music) which makes it totally compelling. turns out chicago based producer/dj's austin keultjes and mike perry (aka supreme cuts) call their surrealist sound "exquisite corpse" (where one person adds on elements after another one finishes). throw in the vocals of polica's channy and you've got a strange interesting sound for your week.

WONGIE SONG OF THE MONTH: lorde - royals (video premiere)

lorde - royals
we fell in love with this sassy number 2 weeks back and have been playing it non-stop since. it's taken awhile, but ella finally released a video to accompany her cool kid anthem and it's brilliant. showcasing the everyday boredom of suburban kids, ella had this to say in her video testimony: "this song means a hell of a lot to me, and to others, and i guess what i tried to do is make something you could understand. a lot of people think teenagers live in this world like 'skins' every weekend or whatever, but truth is, half the time we aren't doing anything cooler than playing with lighters, or waiting at some shitty stop. that's why this had to be real." damn this kid is cool!

[brooklyn hipster act, friends, have now brought their cooler than fun attitude across the pond to the UK and offered up their summer jam as a first release. it's definitely working cause the track has been buzzed on bbc radio 1. not as insta-catchy as 'i'm his girl' but i dig this just the same!]
