WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: twin shadow feat haim - saturdays

twin shadow feat haim - saturdays
celebrating the mood of waking up early on saturdays watching cartoons before taking on the world, then coming home at night watching music videos after hours, that was the schooling i got as a kid and looks like twin shadow (aka george lewis jr) got the same visual education as me. crafting the perfect 80's soundtrack jam, i've been cherishing this song for quite some time and love that it's FINALLY an official single. play it, love it, live it!!

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: haim - little of your love

haim - little of your love
after getting a full-on 14 mins live performance love-fest from director paul thomas anderson, it looks like the appreciation continues with haim's latest celebratory, dance filled video! once again the haim sisters offer up a fun clap along anthem that's easily been an album fave. two stepping never looked so joyous!

LIVE PERFORMANCE: haim - valentine (dir: paul thomas anderson)

haim - valentine (dir: paul thomas anderson)
capturing three performances live to tape, director paul thomas anderson offers us a wonderful look at the haim sisters doing what they do best. somehow these songs sound even better than their studio recordings and gives us new appreciation of their songwriting talents. enjoy "right now", "something to tell you" & "nothing's wrong"!

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: haim - want you back

haim - want you back
when you're haim why not make an LA street your personal catwalk? what i love about this video is that director jake schreier not only gives each sister a moment to walk on their own, but the simplicity of their 'choreography' is enough to showcase the intricacies of the song's arrangement. oh and it's a great pop song for the summer! happy friday people!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: haim - want you back

haim - want you back
though we got a live performance video from the haim sisters last week, turns out the official 1st single off their new album 'something to tell you' is this insta catchy breezy pre-summer jam that perfectly captures the spirit of the haim sound that we fell in love back in the day. world premiering on bbc radio 1 earlier today, the haim album is slowly turning into a must hear for the season!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: haim - right now

haim - right now
capturing the haim sisters performing their new song live, paul thomas anderson has single handedly brought back a new enthusiasm for the trio that may have waned since their too close social association with a certain ms. swift. the excitement of watching the song unfold in real time should be the basis of all releases from now on. that's how you 'f**king' do it indeed!

various artists - insurgent OST
with the likes of m83, haim, lykke li, woodkid, royal blood, sohn and imagine dragons all contributing new tracks to the upcoming soundtrack to the immensely popular 'divergent' sequel, hopefully this will bide the time before the actual film gets released this weekend!

WONGIE INDIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: calvin harris feat haim - pray to god

calvin harris feat haim - pray to god
unless he was in a bear suit, it's kind of fascinating that calvin harris stepped back and just let the hippie beauties of haim take over the whole video stage. there's some serious channelling of stevie nicks (in both the spinning and guitar hook) but all in all, this is a jam that deserves some repeated listening!

CRAM JAM: 10 MORE SONGS! feat bondax / elliphant / e.n.v / doug locke / coldplay / gerard way / haim / kimbra / katy b / mary lambert

bondax feat tanya lacey - all i see
co-written by mnek and becky hill, this is another soulful dance gem from the UK producers!

elliphant feat skrillex - only getting younger
whoa! newbie ellinor olovsdotter (aka elliphant) really knows how to rip into that dub bass! this time skrillex gets in on the action and well... press play. it's pretty darn good!

e.n.v feat little nikki - your love
a bit of pop house for your weekend thanks to UK producer e.n.v and little nikki!

doug locke - #thiscouldbeus
honestly, anything with a # for a song title is something i try to avoid, but the pure poppery of this single by actor/songwriter doug is just catchy enough for me to forget. throw in the touching video and you've got something pretty decent here.

coldplay - true love
though the song is meh, the jonas akerlund video featuring actress jessica lucas and chris martin, is a sweet story about two big spirits just wanting to dance. LET THE PEOPLE DANCE!!

gerard way - no shows
ex my chemical romance frontman gerard way brings his love of 90's britpop as his new sound as a solo artist. setting up his upcoming 'hesitant alien' debut, this is a catchy fun indie rock number that is miles away from his previous glam rock persona. i'm digging this!

haim feat a$ap ferg - my song 5
with a video featuring a slew of guest stars including snl's vanessa bayer, kesha and ezra koenig from vampire weekend, this song is easily the odd man out from their debut album 'days are gone' (they admitted to being inspired by timbaland). i kinda dig it more because of that!

kimbra - miracle
embracing some serious disco here, this joyous new single by kimbra is just pure happiness!

katy b - little red light
released just in time for last weeks notting hill carnival in london, this reggae tinged number is just perfect for the sound stages of the day.

mary lambert - secrets
the voice of last years 'same love' anthem, gets her own catchy poppy singalong single that you'll be humming along to in no time.

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: haim - falling

haim - falling
like the haim sisters didn't need any more reason to build on the already high pitched anticipation for their debut album. this 3rd single is kind of all sorts of awesome!

WONGIE FM: Best of 2012 #21-30

Best of 2012: #21-30

Edging closer to the top 20, this batch consists of some of my favorite bands of last year (The Maccabees, Dirty Projectors, Everything Everything and Alt J are all f-ing brilliant!) that offered up a mix of tracks that both appealed to my quiet internal and boppy external, all the while teaching me some quirky musicality no one else had.

While the rest of the bunch definitely showcases the fact that electronic music and hipster soul have ALOT in common these days (Solange, Santigold and Azealia Banks being the best examples of what I'm talking about). Of course fans of dance music will not be surprised that the epic Swedish House Mafia track made the list, as did the uber catchy Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (I mean the vocal hook is "feet don't fail me now!").  Finally 2012 discovery Haim make their way into the top 30 with their happy go lucky sunny pop that feels both retro and fresh at the same time. Just love these gals!!!

Up next the Top 20!

21. The Maccabees – Pelican / Feel To Follow
22. Dirty Projectors – Dance For You / Swing Lo Magellan
23. Everything Everything – Cough Cough / Kemosabe
24. Alt J – Tessellate / Matilda
25. Solange – Losing You
26. Swedish House Mafia – Don’t You Worry Child
27. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Tapes and Money
28. Santigold – Disparate Youth
29. Haim – Don’t Save Me / Forever
30. Azealia Banks – Esta Noche

WONGIE DISCOVERY: haim - forever

haim - forever
[nothing like discovering a new band like haim who are easily giving up one of the catchiest indie hybrid pop  songs you'll hear all summer (cowbells vs retro lo fi funk AND singalong choruses)! made up 3 haim sisters and their friend dash hutton, they are definitely on our radar for the season! like what your hear? the band are giving away their EP for free!]
