janet jackson vs ciara - these days one is better than the other

even before nipplegate, janet jackson's career had reached a plateau in which she just wasn't moving beyond her 90's star status. so when i read that she's been working hard with her control producers jimmy jam/terry lewis AND under the watchful eye of her boyfriend JD (who helped mariah rise back from the dead last year), i was expecting some seriously hot shizz coming out.

well, apparently the shizz from janet is literally crapola. the 1st release is dull and boring, plus the video goes nowhere and is an expensive mess (what do you expect from director hype williams these days?). i'm totally disappointed.

flipside, ciara has recently released a single that sounds like the stuff janet should be putting out. energetic, polished and well... relavant, this 21 year old really gives janet a run for her money (and she sometimes even sounds like her).

this ain't no diva war. it's just a shame that someone like janet, who is so obviously talented and loved can mess it up so easily.

justin timberlake - sexyback world premiere

video stills from the sexyback shoot. JT is all seriuos and shizz...

the highly anticipated sexyback video by justin timberlake world premiered on trl and mtv's overdrive today (US only). shot by michael hausmann (madonna's take a bow), the video was filmed in barcelona with a cast of sexy people posing around while JT goes from hallway to room to corridor to bathroom stalls and eventually the bed of a hot spanish babe.

apparently there's a plot line, but i couldn't tell from the heavy editing.

decide for yourself if you like the video or not, but it's worth a look see no matter what. as for the rest of you not living the states, here is the youtube version just cause i'm so nice!

justin timberlake - sexy back

robbie williams is a rudebox

so i was right after all. as i reported a few days back, rudebox is really the name of the latest robbie williams single.

i get the feeling that because the instrumental version of the song was so fun, they wanted to create some proper underground buzz before attaching the song to something as pop as robbie williams.

with the remixes supported these past two weeks by club dj's pete tong, sasha, digweed and mark ronson, the song was getting some respect on the dancefloors. then on friday, the whole thing was exposed as a robbie thing (if you think about it, the always cheeky robbie would release a song like 'rudebox').

now whether you like the single or not, the rudebox remixes and videos are still fun to check out.

is cowboy the new pink? muse, the walkmen and the killers seem to think so

just seeing a rash of videos inspired by the wild west these days.
is this genre taking over last years punk revival visuals? guess i gotta get that bandana around my neck after all!

muse - knights of cydonia
the best video of the week! it's wild west madness as muse throw in kung fu, robots and a damsel in distress.
buy their crazy prog rock album here

the walkmen - louisiana
though not as raunchy as the muse are, the walkmen try to throw it up a notch with men in drag and the obigatory donkey
buy their awesome new album here

the killers - all these things i've done
the one that started the trend this year... just watch brendan flowers take a shower is reason enough!

VIRAL HYPE: is the rudebox connected to robbie williams?

totally random, but there's been a bit of a rudebox phenomenom doing the viral rounds these days. basically people are asked to download a clip of a song called rudebox and shoot or edit a video to the groove.

the results have been hilarious (see my faves below!)

GRANNY RUDEBOX

GRANNY RETURNS RUDEBOX

OFFICE RUDEBOX

but what makes this rudebox setup interesting is the fact that the groove may just be the instrumental track to robbie williams new single. though nothing is confirmed yet, i have a feeling that this may just be true. if so, this departure into an electro-fantastic 80's groove makes me definitely psyched about what's to come!

fergie

with her mix of solid vocals and street sass, the prescence of fergie easily brought the Black Eyed Peas to a whole new level. so it was a matter of time that the 'licsiousness of fergie would go solo.
working with a truck load of producers, check out the first release of her upcoming album.
fergie - london bridge (will only be on for a week)

new video monday

death cab for cutie - i will follow you into the dark
this is not only my favorite song on death cab's last album, but this is also my current favorite video.

yazoo - only you
definitely one of my all time favorite songs ever. don't know why alison moyet and vince never got back together again. was their rift that big? hm...

snow patrol - chasing cars
definitely one of my favorite songs out at the moment. i just can't stop listening to this.

dixie chicks - easy silence
this is one of my favorite songs from the amazing dixie chicks album. all i can say is their album ranks up there as one of my fave albums of the year. i love rick rubin's gorgeous hand in crafting their voices and songs to the best i've ever heard these ladies sound. i love it!

guys who sing sweetly... so sweetly (paolo nutini, mike rosenberg band, jim noir, alexi murdoch)

i don't know if trends come in waves or not, but it seems like there are a slew of male artists coming out over the next month with some considerable buzz. luckily they are all talented and worth mentioning. here are the men with the sweetest voices collected just for you.

final fantasy

thank goodness he dropped the costumes for proper attire. oh the wacky canucks!

friends of wongie have heard me go crazy for two musical acts this season; beirut (see below) and final fantasy.

the combined talent that these two young geniuses have made me wish that i should have taken all those piano lessons a bit more seriously when i was a kid.

final fantasy was born when music student, owen pallett, was invited to perform at an influential toronto music showcase where acts like peaches and broken social scene first got their start. combining his classical music training with his love of indie, final fantasy quickly became a local darling with invites to perform with arcade fire, jim guthrie band and the hidden cameras.

last month, final fantasy released his amazing 2nd album called 'he poos clouds' which continues his audacious presentation in both name and performance (probably one of the reasons why i love him so).

i was lucky enough to check out owen at a gig last month and what progressed was easily one of the most mesmirizing performances i've seen in awhile. just solo, he managed to create the orchestral feel of the album with a loop machine and serious multi tasking skills. if you ever get the chance, you gotta go see it to believe it.

final fantasy - this is the dream of win and regine
final fantasy - many lives -> 49mp
final fantasy - arctic circle

while you're here, check out a gig that final fantasy did last year (when he had silly hair) via the awesome blog you ain't no picasso

r&b chick vids - just a video collection of some of my fave tunes now

cassie - me & u
for those us who do remember janet doing this as 'the pleasure principal' then you could say flattery is the best compliment. unfortunately she's not as good of a dancer or singer. the good news is that she's super cute and well... she's friggin cute!

letoya - torn
if this girl looks familiar it's because letoya used to be part of the initial lineup of destinys child (before she was ousted). but looks like she's over all that and is under the watchful eye of jermaine (i saved mariah carey's career) dupri. and to think no one thought the 'other' girls could sing a note...

cheri dennis - i love you
cleveland soul/r&b is in the house. just like this song really. no other reason.

cherish - do it do it
apparently it does take four sisters (biological and not in that 'sistas' way) to sing a song these days

beirut

*zach condon is only 19 years old
*zach condon is the band leader of the band beirut
*beirut have been the blog darlings since the beginning of this summer which is where i discovered them
*beirut's music is inspired by balkan gypsy troupes but filtered with zach's sweeping tenor vocals and a backup band that are all genius multi-instrumentalists
*i've seen beirut perform twice in the past two weeks and it's sickening how much i have a crush on a 19 year old kid

here are my favorite songs from his current album gulag orkestar

beirut - postcards from italy
beirut - mount wroclai (idle days)

here are two more songs that beirut performed at soundfix last weekend
beirut - shiki shiki baba (live) [this is apparently one of the songs that inspired his love of balkan okestar music. the vibe is awesome!]
beirut - new song (live) [this is one of my favorite new tunes of his. it's love-r-ly!]

and if you wanna see what beirut look like live, check out two videos from the gig that i was at last night at northsix

beirut - postcards from italy (live at northsix)
beirut - unknown song (live at northsix)
[the camera work is horrendous, but this song was written last week and is absolutely beautiful! just click on the link and listen to the song without watching the video]

finally, if you want a really nice profile of the band, check out this one from the village voice

madonna - get together video

i know, it's been AGES since i posted something here
but i promise a barrage of stuff next week now that my life is finally getting into a semblance of normalcy. but until then, here is the latest video of good ol madge. using footage of her concert at 'koko' last year, the design team of logan have done a great job of making the video gorgeous!

beats sunday

just some hot beat driven trax that i found this weekend... thought i'd share cause i'm nice like that.

gustavo santaolalla - the wings (theme from brokeback mountain) (gabriel and dresden's organized nature remix) (this is borderline hokey but somehow hot remixers gabriel and dresden make this work)
the knife - marble house (rex the dog remix) (another hot remix by rex the dog for this amazing swedish duo)
fatboy slim - that old pair of jeans (one of the two new recordings from his upcoming greatest hits collection)
clipse feat pharrell williams - mr me too (hot hot dirrrrty minimal groove track!)

eskobar

it's hard to belive that it's been 10 years since three young blokes named Daniel, Frederik and Robert decided to focus on music completely to form a band by the name of eskobar.

with three albums under their belt, the trio have managed to gather a pretty faithful fanbase that have followed them through their various musical stages of pop rock to acoustic to the nice folky americana sound that they've decided to work with for their latest self titled release.

though eskobar have had a run of success throughout europe, the trio have yet to break the elusive US market. hopefully their wonderfully catchy melodies that got me hooked will win over some new fans too.

recorded completely live, the new album eskobar is also the first release under their own imprint Gibulchi Records. though it's now only released in sweden, you can still buy the whole album via itunes or at amazon (though itunes is much cheaper).

check out the video for their current single persona gone missing

also check out a few of my fave tunes from their current album:
eskobar - persona gone missing
eskobar - devil keeps me moving (my fave)
eskobar - whatever this town
eskobar - by your side

nelly furtado

the internet music sites have been going a bit mad with the various leaks of the upcoming nelly furtado album 'loose'.

calling it a full fledged club album, nelly furtado has been collaborating with timbaland, pharrell williams and scott storch on her proposed june release of bootilicious tracks.

personally, i'm enjoying the two singles out now, but the one that i'm totally jammin to is the possible street track "no hay igual". i have to say, it's looking like a hot nelly furtado summer to me!

check out the two videos that world premiered last week on mtv europe and mtv us.

nelly furtado feat timbaland - promiscuous girl

nelly furtado - maneater

nelly furtado - no hay igual

oh and if you wanna check out further info and some hot remixes of her current singles, (i'm a bit fan of gotdoin's remixes) check out the amazing fan site burnin the spotlight.

jolie holland

to truly understand jolie holland you have to see her live. never giving the same performance twice, jolie has been known to walk off stage when she doesn't feel she is proving herself worthy of the music she plays (what an alt country diva!).

but when she does get it right, her thick dreamy voice, matched with pale porcelain skin, creates a magical experience that channels stories from her made up past. blending americana, jazz and folk, jolie holland has slowly created a rabid fanbase over her three album career that includes tom waits, nick cave and billy bragg on her camp.

it's her three albums that speak for this native texan. introspective, classic and beautiful at the same time, get a feel of this amazing talent with some tracks below.

for a brief time, jolie holland's myspace site is offering two tracks from her latest album springtime can kill you

jolie holland - springtime can kill you
jolie holland - crazy dreams

also from her 2nd album escondida
jolie holland - old fashioned morphine

if you like what you hear check out a track from her 1st album catalpa

super gay wednesday

pussycat dolls feat snoop dogg - buttons

mary j blige feat brook lyn - enough cryin

mariah carey feat snoop dogg and pharrell - say something

christina milian - say i (hani remix)
(as much as i love the backing track for the original, christina's vocals just don't ring true for me. i'm feeling the remix more in this case)

four songs with their accompanying videos that will make any person gay. the mega wattage of fabulousness is in overdrive and basically will either make you wanna learn how to dance (pussycat dolls), get street (christina milian) or wear couture to massive drag results (Mary J Blige/Mariah Carey). i have opted to merge all three!

everything but the girl

since the late 80's i have been a massive fan of the husband/wife duo everything but the girl. ben watt and tracey thorn's introspective yearning lush vocals and tight harmonies helped me though many a dramatic college evening. then as i got older, their neo jazz/folk sound slowly incorperated electronica and other fun elements, yet still had the soul of sentimentality that i love in music.

more than a decade later ebtg still continue to work in different guises. ben is now a successful dj with his hot house label buzzin fly while tracey recently recorded vocals for the new tiefschwartz album. for the fans of the duo, keep waiting cause they have yet to announce any new albums for the time being.

what triggered the ode to ebtg? a collection released by their previous label of older catalog that just gave me a rush of memories. check out the full listings of their platinum collection.
and while you're at it, here are some of my all time fave ebtg songs (of the early stuff):

everything but the girl - come on home (from their first album)
everything but the girl - i don't want to talk about it
everything but the girl - apron strings
everything but the girl - the only living boy in new york (check out ben's more featured vocals on this track)

finally, here is a remix of tracey's latest recording with hot dance act tiefschwarz
tiefschwarz feat tracey thorn - damage (mandy remix)

various covers

i've been feeling kind of guilty for my lack of posts here and i thought i'd ease my conscience with a batch of covers done by some unexpected performers.

i'm actually a big fan of cover versions only because when it's done right, you get to see a side of an artist that they may not be able to express through their own music. i'm also a big fan of the mashing up of genres (hip hop sung by an indie band, folk by a heavy metal posse etc...).

besides the blogs, another great place to find these covers is at jo whiley (which is where i found alot of these). here are a few of my faves of the moment:

ray lamontagne - crazy (gnarls barkley cover)
osunlade and erro - everything in it's right place (radiohead cover)
natasha bedingfield - somewhere only we know (keane cover)
arctic monkeys - love machine (girls aloud cover)
starsailor - push the button (sugababes cover)
david gray - smile like you mean it (killers cover)
belle and sebastian - the boy with the thorn in his side (live) (smiths cover)

and a classic:
communards - never can say goodbye (classical mix) (gloria gaynor cover)

gnarls barkley (again!)

it's finally come! the gnarls barkley phenomenom has hit mega proportions. with a #1 UK single (from downloading alone!) and one of the most anticipated albums of the year, it's amazing that it's taken so long for all of this to finally happen (if you know nothing of this band, check out my previous posting about them back in feb.

thanks to stereogum for passing this hot rendition on the Uk's TOTP via myspace

Get this video and more at MySpace.com

or check out the video:
gnarls barkley - crazy

personally, i've been listening to highlights from the new album and these are the ones that i keep on returning to.

gnarls barkley - just a thought (this has to be the next single. the beats alone is worth cranking up the stereo for)
gnarls barkley - smiley faces
gnarls barkley - storm coming

the knife

the knife are a stockholm based brother/sister duo of Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson. Wacky yet dark at the same time, their mix of electro based music have been all the buzz for the past few months.

extremely camera shy and private, the knife separate themselves by also being canny entrepreneurs and controlling creatives. setting up separate distribution deals around the world AFTER they've recorded their albums, the knife have the ability to record with no pressure from any label. they also have yet to tour since they can't think of any way to make their performances interesting for the audience.

i picked up their 3rd album silent shout and have been focusing on a two tracks in particular every chance i can get.

the knife - silent shout
the knife - heartbeats (rex the dog remix)

while you're at it, check out the cool creepy video of the title track which i can't stop listening to.

imogen heap

imogen heap is a kooky one. part mad scientist, part girly girl and genius vocal layerist, imogen left a very successful venture as one half of frou frou to follow her soul in creating a solo album. mortgaging her home, imogen gave herself a year to record her album 'speak for yourself' and the result is an ingenious pop collection that is both complex and simple at the same time.

i've had this album since last year and brushed through it over xmas. but lately, i find myself going back and really concentrating on two songs in particular (i've included their videos above). every time i listen to these songs, i'm finding new things in these tunes. whether you already have this album or not, hopefully you'll go back and discover something new too. oh to be obsessed.

imogen heap - hide and seek (ciaran strings remix)
imogen heap - goodnight and go

missy elliot

a quickie for the day, check out the latest video by missy elliot. i wasn't overly enthused when i heard this track awhile back, but with all of missy's video releases, she adds a bit of extra niceness. in conjunction to the summer girl flick 'stick it', check out her latest 'we run this'.
turn it up.

missy elliot - we run this (stick it edit)

rihanna

Rihanna - SOS (video)

what a difference a year makes. just a few months back, rihanna, a seemingly one hit wonder from barbados, hit the charts with her catchy dancehall inspired smash 'pon the replay'. the single was everywhere with the cute rihanna in tow.

fast foward less that a year later and def jam have decided to bank some star power into the rihanna project. with a new album, a more urban sound and a complete sexy makeover, rihanna vers 2006 will come out to be a smash.

based on the 1st single alone (watch the video by clicking on the link above) and see what i'm talking about. the girl is HOT!!!!!

rihanna - sos (jason nevins elektrotek club mix)

boy least likely to

can a band be too cute for their own good? in the case of the boy least likely to, the duo of pete and jor, rides that fine line of being sweet and innocent over twee and just lame.

though some songs from their debut album the best party ever barely register over a minute long, the few gems on this alluring collection definitely make up for the rest. personally i just want a few t-shirts of their cute drawings.

boy least likely to - be gentle with me
boy least likely to - hugging my grudge

erasure

after just releasing their 11th studio album last year, erasure return with the acoustic album union street.

recorded at a brooklyn studio on union street, vince clarke and andy bell went back into their catalog and found 11 less populist tracks to strip down completely to just vocals and guitars.

the end result is something quite wonderful and i highly suggest you get the album when it comes out in april. with a sold out acoustic tour beginning april 18th, lets hope these two will be adding more dates in the future!

erasure - boy (originally from: cowboy)
erasure - spiralling (originally from: the circus)
erasure - rock me gently (originally from: erasure) (my personal favorite!)

natasha bedingfield

i've been a fan of natasha since her album came out in the uk back in 2004. now that the US is finally realizing her pop fantastic talents, i'm reaquainting myself with these songs and enjoying her on local tv as opposed to watching everything via the internet.

funnily enough i ask you to check out a recent performance of 'unwritten' from a regis and kelly tv appearance below

ll cool j

welcome to my guilty pleasure of the moment.
ll cool j feat jennifer lopez - lose control (jason nevins elektrotek edit)

neko case

though neko case was born in virginia, vancouver, british columbia was where this alt- country talent found her true voice.

channelling retro country with elements of punk bravado, neko case not only has proven herself one of the more exciting solo female artists around, but her ongoing collaboration with the new pornographers allows her to diversify her amazing voice and sound.

this month neko releases her first studio album in two years called fox confessor brings the flood, it's really beautiful and i've been listening to it nonstop for the past week. check out neko performing on leno last week to get an idea of her strong dynamo voice.

neko case - star witness

neko case - a widow's toast

sondre lerche

23 year old norwegian musical wunderkund sondre lerche returns after a mini break with the 1st of his two planned releases of 2006 called 'duper sessions'.

focusing on his love of jazz and its spontaneous live sound, sondre went into the studio with three other musicians and recorded the album.

the result is a breezy sweet jazzy affair that further shows this kids versatility and talent. until the proper release of his pop album later this year, get to know sondre in a different light.

check out the first video for the duper sessions 'minor detail' below

girls aloud

girls aloud are Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh. created after an audience vote selected them as the winning girl group in 2002 uk reality TV series, Popstars: The Rivals. The show adopted a new twist on the Popstars theme, picking opposing boy and girl bands to battle it out in the UK charts. Their debut single, "Sound Of The Underground", was released in December 2002 and stayed at No.1 in the UK charts for four weeks beating not only the boys, but also introduced an interesting group that weren't opposed to releasing left of center power pop.

4 years later and the girls have exceeded all expectations. collaborating with hot producers xenomania, girls aloud have found a strange mix of rock a billy meets hyper pop meets retro 60's to successfully call their own. add to the fact that these ladies have been repackaged to look like nouveau riche trashy chicks and you've got a group that reminds me of what the bratz dolls would be like if they were slutty and in their 20's.

needless to say, i love them!

check out theie performance of 'whole lotta history' on cd:uk below and while you're at it, their myspace site.

girls aloud - sound of the underground
girls aloud - whole lotta history

morrissey

the cult popularity of 80's icon morrissey has been making the rounds over the past few years. with hot theme parties thrown in his honour all over the world, morrissey finally broke his silence in 2004 with the album 'you are the quarry' to the delight of his many fans.

two years on, the buzzing of a new album ringleader of the tormentors is in our midst and i must say, there a few boys (and girls) like me, who are in tizzy just thinking of it!

co-written with his new writing partner jesse tobias, the new album offers melodious rock anthems mixed in with some dramatic songs of woe. the album also promises to cover multiple themes of mortality, love and a few angry anti government comments for measure (would it be a morrissey album without?).

the album comes out next month, but until then, here are two tracks for you to check out:
morrissey - you have killed me
morrissey - dead god, please help me

jose gonzalez

for those of you who never saw the hypnotic sony bravia ad, may i suggest that you click on the 1st image then check out the making of piece right below.

as for those of you wondering who is that sweet voice singing the cover version of the knife song 'heartbeats', well it's none other than swedish/argentine jose gonzalez.

though this folk singer's awesome album 'veneer' was released in april 05, it took the above ad to bring him into the mainstream and also into the charts. quiet and sublime, check out two of his songs right here:

jose gonzalez - heartbeat #1
jose gonzales - crosses #1

busta rhymes - touch it (remix)

weirdly enough, during the filming of this video, bodyguard izzy ramirez was shot and killed. then artists were brought back in to finish shooting the video with the whole thing now dedicated to izzy. weird indeed.

keyshia cole

just 23 years old, bay area vocalist keyshia cole has (in my eyes) slowly edged her way to the top of the r&b female singer heap in the past year.

with a killer voice that not only speaks from the heart, keyshia has the ability to also bring in a street vibe that doesn't sound fabricated or fake.

i'm sure comparisons to early mary j blige are all over the place, but keyshia's forte at the moment seems to be street ballads. i'm in love with her current single and can't wait to karaoke it soon!

keyshia cole - love

sugababes vs arctic monkeys

already in version 4 mode, the hipper than thou girls of sugababes have been making some of the best non-commital pop music for awhile.

part ghetto fabulous, part post hipster and yet totally pop at the same time, their awesome catalog is only matched with the behind the scenes drama in which key members seem to drop inexplicably all the time.

late last year, founding member mutya beuna (the one that looked like she could cut you in an alley if she wanted to) left for personal reasons and almost overnight amelle berrabah (the one in the middle) jumped in, re-recorded her vocals on their recent album and is preparing to go on tour with the girls in a couple of months.

it seems like the change hasn't affected their fanbase, their current single 'red dress' went #1 in the charts and they made a bit of a surprise ruckus when they performed a version of the arctic monkeys smash ' i bet you look good on the dancefloor'.

with talks to work with scissor sisters and andre 3000 for the next album, looks like V4 will be doing well for the time being.

check out their version of the arctic monkeys while you're at it....
sugababes - i bet you look good on the dancefloor

josh rouse

josh rouse
josh rouse myspace

there's something about josh rouse's southern laid back vocals meets high class romanticism that has mad me adore his music for years. on his latest venture 'subtitulo', josh is inspired by a small town in spain where he recorded a bulk of this album.

if you haven't heard about this guy, now's the time (though i'm a bigger fan of his last album 'nashville').

check out something from his latest album subtitulo quiet town or right click here

tiga

montreal based, dirty-electro maven, tiga, has been filling the dancefloor with his brand of retro 80's new wave meets funk grooves for years. but it's only been in the last two years that his music has finally started to make dents on club charts around the world.

released in feb of this year, his debut album 'sexor' is a mixed bag of drama and sexy (can't really say that it's changed my life, but it's a nice fun album to bide the time until something better comes along!)

but there has been that one song that's been standing out
