WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: cold war kids - love is mystical

cold war kids - love is mystical
there's something wonderfully timely for LA rockers cold war kids to put out a positive foot stomping jam that celebrates hope and love in this current climate. of course it helps that frontman nathan willett has an amazingly soulful voice to lift this song to a new level. love these guys!

ROCK GAL: mitski - your best american girl

mitski - your best american girl
the fact that we have a new rock gal to admire is something to make note of (there's alot of electronic or folkie indie gals but rock... it's few these days). then mitski miyawaki goes and writes a great kick ass song about not being able to find her 'american' identity due to her bi-racial background and you've got someone with a solid voice that will influence and inspire people (she's already a big tumblr star). i'm new to this gal, but damn, i'm totally into it!

ALBUM STREAM: ryan adams - 1989 (taylor swift album)

ryan adams - 1989 (taylor swift album)
a total curiosity, singer songwriter ryan adams spent the summer covering taylor swift's '1989' album and the result is this celebration of her songs. allowing us to hear her music through a different filter, some of these covers are surprisingly wonderful. awesome!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: james bay - scars

james bay - scars
i'm a little bit surprised that it's taken so long for this live and album favorite to be an official single. but it's better late than never cause after all these months, this power ballad is still a rousing dramatic piece that showcases why james is definitely one of the best artists to come out of 2015. love it!

WONGIE INDIE ROCK SONG OF THE WEEK: nothing but thieves - trip switch

nothing but thieves - trip switch
what an instantly catchy single from the UK indie rock band nothing but thieves! sure, there are hooks galore that you've heard before (it's a little bit of muse meets alt-j), but this five piece definitely has a big hit on their hands and you can't fault them for that. on my radar!

VIDEO PREMIERE: mumford & sons - the wolf / belive (live performance)

mumford & sons - the wolf
[UPDATE] now with a live performance video which makes this song more bearable. i guess this album needs to be heard live instead of the studio version.

THIS IS WHAT I WROTE LAST WEEK:
so the song isn't bad and marcus sounds pretty rocking. but it's just kind of too easy to criticize this band for trying out a new sound for themselves and coming out kind of derivative (cough... foo fighters... cough). sigh...

want more? check out mumford and sons on SNL over the weekend:

mumford & sons - believe (live @ snl)
once again, this song sounds SO much better live!

LYRIC VIDEO PREMIERE: muse - psycho

muse - psycho
going back to their rock stadium roots, muse unleashed 'psycho' for their fans, therefore teasing a harder sound for their new album 'drones'. though this isn't the first single off the album, it is a kick in the face fuzzy guitar number that will no doubt inspire some intense air guitar-ing. go ahead... i won't judge (ok maybe i will).

AUDIO PREMIERE: mumford & sons - believe

mumford & sons - believe
first single off the upcoming new album 'wilder mind', this is a definite new direction for the ex-stomp along troubadours. falling more under coldplay/ u2 aspirations, i'm on the fence if i like this at all (though the banjo sing a longs were getting tired too). hopefully the rest of the album will convince me otherwise.

taylor swift - blank space

sam smith - lay me down

paloma faith - only love can hurt like this

royal blood - figure it out

george ezra - budapest

ed sheeran - bloodstream

madonna - living for love

oh yeah, this is uber cool!!! by pressing 3 or b on your keyboard, you can check out the three different versions of this song. (jack white is the director of the live action version, james blagden the animated version and brad holland the headbang one). it's all very cool and fun and marks yet another awesome release by the prolific indie rocker.

VIDEO PREMIERE: kelly clarkson - heartbeat song

kelly clarkson - heartbeat song
UPDATE: check out the video premiere of kelly's single. not sure why she's hiding behind flowy material, but the song is still catchy as heck a month onwards!
reuniting with hitmaker greg kurstin ('what doesn't kill you (stronger)'), kelly kicks off 2015 with this insta catchy pop number that weirdly reminds me of the jimmy eat world 90's smash 'the middle'. but lets re-focus at the fact that kelly is back from her mini break and we look forward to hearing more from her in the coming months!

ok fine... here is the jimmy eat world song that is now a fave at karaoke for yours truly:

VIDEO PREMIERE: one direction - steal my girl

one direction - steal my girl
it's kind of amazing that the biggest boy band in the world is making pop songs that dads will probably go for these days. co-written by liam and louis, this is the official first single kicking off the upcoming 'four' album and it's perfectly fine!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: ben howard - end of the affair

ben howard - end of the affair
clocking at almost 8 minutes, this journey of a break up song feels like it goes through all the stages of grief and then miraculously comes through scathed but living in the end. the secretive return of ben howard is looking to be an exciting one!
